I had alcohol as a baby. Whiskey for teething pain. Then whenever we’d have a family event the kids were allowed an alcoholic drink. I’ve never had a drink problem and I don’t drink any alcohol as an adult because it doesn’t interest me in the slightest. It’s not all down to early exposure and more to do with things like trauma and self medication. There’s hope for everyone:)

It's something only an addict/alcoholic can understand; how, once we get sober, we can discuss our horrible experiences with laughter in our voices. It's not that it's actually funny, it's more that we're in amused awe & shock of the lengths we went through to get messed up. Kind of a "laugh to keep from crying"/exasperated "how am I alive" thing. It's not everyone's experience, but I've found a lot of us develop that dark sense of humor as a coping mechanism while we're using, & it sticks with us once we come to terms with how our lives used to be.

Ironically they fuck up your life faster then the last time. Don't get me wrong I am GLAD he's sober now, but it's a life long battle to stay clean and sober and we can't let our guards down for even a second cause this disease will find a way to worm itself back into your body...

No offense, but I think you have a worse understanding of addiction than I do. I drank heavily for years, self-medicating my bipolar, now that I'm getting more stable, it looks like I'm not actually an alcoholic, though I am DEFINITELY STILL WARY OF IT. Why don't you take some courses, become a counselor? You'll have a better understanding of addiction, and maybe be able to help others effectively. Its wjat I plan to do. This is because Steve-O has now been clean and sober for 13 years. Most addicts do not want to openly and honestly talk about their addiction when they’re in the midst of it because that is the nature of addiction, it lives in secret and thrives in the dark.

@@cassity2029 We have made it that way though. Society has caused people to hide their flaws in order to fit in better. The problem is that no one is without faults. People have just gotten better at hiding them. We need to change that and start embracing the flaws and helping each other overcome them. We are only as strong as our support system. The problem is that the people who appear weaker are the ones that need a stronger support system in place, but those are the people we usually give up on first.
