Jayson Tatum recalls a traumatizing moment from his childhood at a predominantly white school - when his teacher was quick to disapprove of his dream to play in the NBA. Plus we hear from Jayson Tatum’s mom Brandy, who remembers marching up to school to put Jayson’s teacher in her place.

I attended school with his father and Larry Hughs. Both of them were driven, reacted so well to adversity, we're rarely treated as more than incredible athletes despite the fact that they were incredible young men and exceptional STUDENT athletes among a predominantly white, privileged male student body. They indirectly taught me how to be a transformative coach and teacher. Jason is the product of incredible family support from his mother and father so whether they were together or not has nothing to do with raising fine young men and women in a society where this combined with the fact that so many still believe that centuries of oppression and denial of any basic human rights is no excuse for any mistake in black culture. Excepting others to pull themselves up from boot straps that never had straps aka support to begin with is the mindset that sets all humans back centuries. This is a fantastic interview. Thank you so much for speaking your truth.

Jayson your father not only liked you ..he loved you. As adults we have to remember that we do not know our parents 'back story '. Parents never really tell their children every thing about their upbringing. Somethings are better left unsaid. Sometimes parents mimick what was shown to them maybe your father only knew though love as a way of saying 'I love you'. That doesn't mean it was right it just means that's what he was taught. I am sure you father showed love towards you as best as he could. Never forget that. Always strive to be the change you want to see in the world. Keep this in mind..no matter how much of your upbringing you share with your children you will never tell them everything because some memories people mentally block out for one reason or another. I will tell you something that a wise person told me. 'Hold on to the good memories, and let the bad ones go". In time you will see that having inner peace is worth more than you could have ever imagined. While you will never be perfect you will always be a work in progress as a child of God. Your friend in Christ Jesus.

I like how his mom handled the situation, but I gotta say Jayson's explanation of why other kids wanted to be certain things and he didn't makes no sense. He claims those kids wanted to be doctors and lawyers *because* they saw their parents do it and because he didn't see his parents do that he couldn't envision it - yet he could envision something way less common and likely which his parents also didn't do which is be a professional athlete lol

Why didn’t he want anybody else to know that he came from a single parent household? Because that is the familial institution that is projected as the normative family structure even while it’s failing so many people in this society. It’s total bs, but if the adults in your life allow you to be educated in a certain way, you will adopt the normative thinking and socialization.
@JakePicci
@JakePicci Жыл бұрын
It's not total BS. Statistically people are much more likely to succeed if they have both parents in the house. Obviously there's people with single parents or even no parents that succeed, and there's people with two loving parents that do nothing with their lives. I was raised by a single father, so I'm not looking down on it. But typically it's much better for someone to have a loving mother and father. That's just a fact
