The council provides dog crap bags and bins and nobody ever leaves crap on the beach. This is how society should function; where we all work together for a common good. We also have plenty of cafes that encourage people with dogs. It's normal here because we all control our pets and understand what our collective responsibilities are. I lived in Santa Monica 15 years ago, and it was so nice. I built lifelong relationships there, but the culture and attitudes in Los Angeles have changed for the worse. Many people in L.A. exhibit a self-consumed mindset; there's a pervasive self-righteous attitude that reflects a lack of pragmatism, which may explain why progressive ideas often go unchallenged. Real estate prices aren't meeting the needs of the market, as people understandably hesitate to take losses on their properties. This issue parallels New York City, where real estate values should arguably be higher due to structural factors. In China, the phenomenon of ghost cities, with abandoned buildings and infrastructure, highlights how property values can be artificially inflated when seen as investments rather than living spaces.

It's not just Santa Monica, it's all of Los Angeles. Check out all the malls and lively pockets we used to have. Our malls are emptying out, the homeless crisis has EXPLODED to the point that downtown LA has more homeless roaming the streets than residents living in the luxury apartments they beg, scream, and yell in front of. The Walk of Stars in Hollywood is now effectively the Walk of Drugs and Piss (the smell is inescapable). Rodeo Drive, a street infamous for designer stores, has AT LEAST half of their buildings vacant and boarded up for lease. Again, the malls are emptying out and businesses are leaving with no intention of coming back and no prospective replacements, along with many production companies (with multi million dollar filming projects, movies, television shows, ect) moving out of the state because of more attractive tax benefits in places like Atlanta, Texas, and Nevada (among others). California is on borrowed time. People still think we're some cool city to be at and our reputation is ahead of our current state of affairs, but it's catching up. Videos like this are bringing awareness to the reality of our situation. It's sad, so much potential being wasted. So many resources being mismanaged. So many good people and lucrative businesses run off. Just heartbreaking as a native whose watched up close the decline year by year.

I was deeply disappointed to see Santa Monica, the homelessness, the tents. My kids could not understand what was touristy about Santa Monica. We did go to the Pier and have some fun. But wasnt the same level like it was in the late 90s. My city, Pune, has a lot of slum areas. And a lot of nice bangalows. Generally, in India, these are two different areas, even if they are near to each other. In LA, and also in San Francisco, I see the homeless tents right in posh areas. Homeless people on beaches. With all empathy to the homelessness issue, allowing this brings the whole place down. In Pune, the poor people work as servants, maids, drivers to the people living in better areas. So one knows what to expect when they are in each area. In LA, everything is mixed. Posh areas had tents as well. So it was difficult to get my head around this. I hope Santa Monica returns to its earlier glory.

You made me laugh with your comment because I can see the innocence in you. They are not refusing to be on camera for fear of criticizing the government. They are afraid of saying that they feel certain people of certain race are the ones committing crimes like Blacks and Latinos, etc. Minorities. And their fear lies on later receiving backlash from the “cancel culture”. You see, if a business owner goes on camera and says something like “I can’t take all this homeless people all over anymore and minorities coming into my store and stealing stuff, etc”, the cancel culture will come later and boycott this business accusing the owner of being racist or discriminating so basically they will destroy your public image and in the process your business. Thats what they are afraid of saying on camera.

It was once (ca. -1400?) a thriving, well designed, and well defended city with beautiful high walls inside the large and powerful Hittite empire. Then it went into decline. So did the empire. Entire LA is in this condition. From the Skid road to Santa Monica. I was in shock when I arrived last year. People have completely forgotten what it means to have a normal home, where the price of a wooden box with windows should be around $20-30k NOT MORE. That’s the real cost of a house. People have gotten so used to high prices that they think it’s normal. But it’s not, it is not folks.

I heard from someone who cater for celebrities that many people with some Money in CA do not pay taxes. As more and more plastic sold by amazon ( who does not produce anything) keeps growing with their online sales - then the government only keep raising properties and other taxes, no way to survive, as for everyone who “works from home” gets paid by someone who is selling something. No way places like that can survive relying in property and other sorts of taxes, as small business keep shutting down - together those who support our economy. Very sad, such a lovely place.

The ultra rich / billionaires don't get taxed their fair share in America, which could solve many of these problems (all left over from the trickle down from Reagan in the 1980s, which closed all of the mental hospitals).
