Grain Sealing the Stewmac Offset Kit Guitar Bodies with Solarez UV Grain Sealer

I'm demonstrating how I grain sealed two offset mahogany guitar bodies from Stewmac kits, using Solarez UV grain sealer mixed with Colortone Grain Filler.

Like the pool noodle idea. Did you notice any nasty solvent smell or allergic reactions? Im always looking for a safer option then the epoxy grain fill i do now as i dont like exposure to nasty chrmicals for my lifetime

I didn’t have a reaction, although it does have a smell until the UV light cures it. Much less than oil based products. It sounds like you might want to try out water based products. Thanks for watching!

Nice work. You just did the grain fill once? I am using Solarez I Can’t Believe It’s Not Lacquer on a mahogany body and the directions say to do it three times, but I’m not using any powdered grain filler. Does the grain filler eliminate the need to repeat it? I’ve done it twice so far and can’t decide whether to do it again. I think the grain is already filled, and I’ll be putting primer and color over it.

Aloha Will, the powdered grain filler worked very well with Solarez.. When you work with porous wood, it's important to fill the pores, IF you want an ultra smooth finish. The grain and pores will telegraph through any type of paint you'll apply, unless you fill the grain and pores. I sanded and there were certain areas that I sanded down to wood, so re-applied and sanded again, because I'm still trying to decide whether I want to paint the bodies, or just stain them. I tend to favor stained guitars with some of the grain showing. A wood sealer is important if you want to apply an even stain, without any areas that absorb more than others and look blotchy. This is especially important for softer woods and really has no effect with woods like hard maple, where the grain and pores are extremely tight. At this point, I can go either way, but I'm winding pickups right now. So I have a little time to think about it. Best wishes on your guitar build! Send photos.

I have a bunch of 3d printing resin. I wonder if this will achieve the same effect... EDIT: Nope. Doesn't want to cure fully in UV light.

You didn't "raise the grain".

THIS GUY DOES NOT HAVE A CLUE WHAT HE IS DOING !!!! NO ONE PUTS THAT POWDER IN THE GRAIN SEALER. NO ONE. HE ALSO SAID HE SANDS WITH THE GRAIN BUT NOTICE WHAT HE DID ON THE INSIDE OF THE NECK. I BET HIS WORK SELLS FOR $25 DOLLARS A GUITAR.
