Gramophone & Typewriter MONARCH SENIOR, 1906-1908

Gramophone & Typewriter Monarch Senior, 1906-1907, with brass "morning glory" horn type 24b.
This particular horn, the biggest existing in the catalogue, is today very difficult to find, as it was not a standard equipment but an option available for extra money. There are very few 24b brass morning glory surviving today, as probably not so much people was interested to pay more for this expensive improvement. Later, from about 1908, this model was substituted by the more common (even if well appreciated and also worthy) wooden horn, with different styles. So the 24b brass horn was available for short time, just about 3 years, from 1905 to 1908.
The Monarch Senior was in that time simply the best gramophone that could be bought on the market. A powerful and reliable 3 spring motor, the best produced by G&T, the best tonearm, great special horn, for sure it was belonging to a rich entusiast that could pay extra money for a top level machine. There are just other few models, like the Melba or the Sheraton, that were more expensive, but this was just because of the particular cabinet style, as the mechanical features of these very rare special versions were exactly the same as the Monarch Senior.
I found this fantastic gramophone some days ago (september 2013) in a dusty old attic in Milan City, under more than 3 cm of dust, and I can assure you that it is really thrilling to make such discoveries still in 2013.... The soundbox found with the gramophone is not original, but this is a common situation when these old gramophones are discovered and rescued from their long sleeping standby in the dust.
As a matter of fact, the soundbox was the component more easily substituted, because of damages or just to try to improve the sound.. fortunately I have some original Gramophone & Typewriter soundboxes in my collection perfectly rebuilt and waiting for a nice gramophone G&T to complete it...in the video you see both the soundboxes, the discovered one and the original that should have been on it originally.
Filmed in the original discovering condition, before restoration. Now I will restore it personally in all details to bring it back to his glory.

I have the same machine but unfortenatly with a metal morning glory horn. the brass horn is much more seldom i think. beautifull machine congretulations !

According to what I have heard, they didn't make horns out of brass back then because they sounded tinny. The reason people expect brasshorns, is due to the His Masters Voice painting where the company demanded the artist changing the original black horn into a brasshorn so it looked like their latest model at the time. That model didn't just sound horrible, but was also the direct reason that no one made horns from brass again, except those on later fake models. Trust me; Be happy about the horn you have.

Hi Do you know the serial number of this machine? I have a G&T Monarch Senior serial number 9230... But can find very little info here in the states....My motor is different from yours. Has a round base in which the motor is based. Also the crank is far forward. Triple Spring and it is nickel plated it appears. Any info you have ould be greatly appreciated. Thank you

As far as I can tell your engine is correct with the Senior model. Round and nickel-plated base, is a later version, warm drive governor (introduced in 1904) 12 inch turnetable. This engine is correct, for that model You can find this information on "His master s Gramophone" of Oakley & Proudfo
