I have learned a lot after burning through over 12 gallons of fuel mix and cutting over a thousand square feet of lumber with my Granberg set-up that uses a stiff aluminum ladder for the first cut. In the video I quickly show you each important step in setting up the ladder for the most accurate cutting.

Good morning Martin. Having the Alaskan sawmill is one of the greatest things to help a person get boards in the middle of the woods. Enjoyed watching you make boards for the guest cabin. Soon you will be building that cabin. My husband built a homemade sawmill from items that had been used for something else. Everything he use to build it had a former life. I love seeing lumber made from a tree. At 81 and 1/2 years old and he is still making lumber. Our son helps him now . I use to help him but at 80 and 1/2 years old I had to stop. Probably in a little while it will be just our son doing all of it. I sure enjoy seeing and smelling fresh cut wood knowing it will be used to build something. It is better lumber than what one can buy. Take care. God bless you and Vonnie. From deep southeast Mississippi.

Micheal over at Wilson forest lands says that top piece is called a flitch of all things. Very impressed by the progress your making on milling your lumber. Yes a 10 degree milling chain does just make saw dust because it's making a smoother finer cut, just compare the surface when using a traditional felling chain.

Hey Martin, have you ruined a chain by finding old metal, nails and such in the wood? I get into old fencing and such here and there, especially along roads where fences were at one time.

One of these trips you should bring a 1.25 sand point well and a few 5' sticks of pipe and drive yourself a new well. I'll bet there's good water at 15ft. You could even do it in the cabin with a hand pump. Bushradical has a video on how easy it is, and I like his ball valve idea.
@TheNorthwoodsman1

We tried and then locals let us know that the dense fine clay holds not water at all so sand points are a no go.

I didn't realize until around the 13 minute mark...you had someone recording you! Who was it? I'm still looking for 'my' RV...had to put $1700 towards some dental work and another $700 for car maintenance over the past month. Also flew to TX over Easter weekend to visit cousins I haven't seen in 15 years; the trip turned out to be the cheapest expense out of the 3 expenditures...go figure. That pretty much put a hold on the RV search, but will begin looking again in a couple weeks. Needless to say, it's highly doubtful I'll make it up that way when you're going up for the usual spring trip, so I have my sights firmly set on the fall trip. Take care and be safe...

Can you figure a way to put a grove in the upright log you are using for a stand? I would cut the shim on the north end in half, turn them around and screw them down to form a grove that the end of the log can rest in. That might help with the log rolling around on the tand . . . ;>) Sizzle, sizzle . . .
@TheNorthwoodsman1
@TheNorthwoodsman1 4 ай бұрын
The sawdust covered the tops of the uprights so you could not see the shims that were attached there. The log could still spin but that did not matter as the ladder kept the saw properly aligned for the cutting.

dont even try tell me i know play very carful as well heat is big factor let just say four or two cyl engines suck with got spark arester for muffler with got drive know all it sad unspoke truth CO2 is considered to be minimally toxic by inhalation. The primary health effects caused by CO2 are the result of its behavior as a simple asphyxiant. A simple asphyxiant is a gas which reduces or displaces the normal oxygen in breathing air. Symptoms of mild CO2 exposure may include headache and drowsiness.

Those mills are pretty cool. I've got a couple huge hemlocks on my property one is dying unfortunately but I'm not sure if hemlock is any good for live edge siding. I'm building a firewood shed and instead of buying from the sawmill to side it I'd use it for that. I believe hemlock is a soft wood though? I was up to the cabin this weekend I planted 50 eastern white pines I hope they make it. I'll be up there every couple weeks to keep good water to them.
