First off, let me preface this by saying, this is not directed to you Ted. I find it amusing when certain installers / owner swear by a specific brand. "brand X or Y or Z is the best". I've installed furnaces, gas packs, heat pumps and RTU's from almost every brand. Some brands have the installation tech in-mind that makes the install go easier, some not so much. A common theme across all brands....... humans assemble them, mistakes happen. I've had furnaces with the control board wired wrong, hoses missing, hose clamps not on correctly. I once found an extra complete new pressure switch just rolling around in the top half of Goodman 90+ cabinet. Hey.....free pressure switch! 😂 I will say, however, I am not a fan of anything Nordyne nor MicroChannel. I really like that magnetic umbrella, very kool. handy and practical. Great video.

That Short Pro Tool is definitely nice, and the umbrella. I have and use both. The SPT is very handy, and makes it so easy to just unhook one thing at a time to narrow down the issue.

Love your videos brother!! Love that umbrella too, gonna have to look into that.. would come in handy running service here in FL during the rainy season in summer.. I’ve had my short pro a few years now, love it. Saved my ass so many times!! Sure beats burning up 10 fuses chasing down a crazy LV short..
@lee-johnson5 жыл бұрын
I like the Short Pro as well. Great when the ahu is in the attic and you are outside finding the short. It resets itself!

Yes, that is a great use for it as well.

Don't let Volts and Amps fool you. The high lines that brings the power to your homes might only have a 5 or 10 amp fuse but going to your home could have 300 to 500 amps. I work with 100,000 volts but only have less then 1 amp on the power line.

I had to manually advance it past 6:35 to get it to play to the end. I also like the Short Pro Tool although it can be hard to find sometimes. I wonder if the installers tried a big fuse in that holder causing it to smoke.

So was the short from the factory or from a service person? Either way awsome tech work Mr. Cook!
@1221Genocide5 жыл бұрын
The factory 100%. Installers or service guys won't be touching that board or wiring unless there's an issue. You can see when they placed the top on the unit at the factory, they pinched that wire

As a 55 year retired union electrician, IBEW Local #238, I noticed that right off. The wires were stripped too long and a strand or two was out of the connection.

if they would not build them with the heat exchanger in the cold air stream of the ac they would last forever, the last goodman i installed a few years back they had corrected that problem.

I'd have to admit I've never seen a short finder like that. Looks neat. But I do have to disagree on the umbrella. Concept is good but construction needs improving, it broke the same day I got it. Got an exchange the next day and it broke less than a month later. Plastic arms keep breaking.

Variable speed motor, didn't need to be set? And I must have missed the part of the vid that showed you setting and adjusting gas pressure/ temp rise etc... Your tech/installer couldn't have done it when the unit was shorting out? Not trying to downplay your videos or your company... Bc I love the videos... Just wondering is all?
@TedCookHVAC5 жыл бұрын
I have other videos with those procedures .... although some did not perform well so I took them down... there is a "sweet spot" for video length, and sometimes the longer ones don't do as well.

@speckulator75165 жыл бұрын
I had the same problem as others with the video hanging up around six and half minutes. I made up a circuit breaker that I plug into the fuse socket that has saved me who knows how many fuses but the the light and self reset might make me give them the $30.

There are a lot of cheap, low quality fuses being sold online that don't always open at their rated amperage. It's plagued the automotive industry for years. Make sure your guys aren't using cheapo fuses from Amazon. It could explain the burning of terminals from a simple short like that.
