Grand Funk Railroad performing "Inside Looking Out" live from 1969. This clip was shot at "The Show" WITF-TV in Hershey, Pa. November 1969. Mark & Don were 20 & Mel 18 years old. This clip is timeless. I've had hundreds of personal messages from people of 4 generations worldwide that are in awe of this powerful performance. (Folks from 11 to 83 years of age.) I've been told it's early "METAL", to the original "GRUNGE", to the real begining of "PUNK", to the first "GARAGE BAND", to pure "TRIBAL ROCK", to "INDUSTIAL STRENGTH ROCK." One thing's for sure, it is powerful, passionate, singular, & unique. Mark, Don, & Mel changed music forever with 10 minute Power Songs like this one. This is the ULTIMATE POWER TRIO. Grand Funk Railroad was truly a "Performance Vehicle". What you heard on the albums could be duplicated 100% on their live performances. Many would say it's impossible for a 3 piece band to do this live. See the impossible. Once you start watching it, it's hard not to finish it. This is the most popular GFRxR video on the Web. Click on the link below & sign the online petition to induct Mark Farner & GFRxR into The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame now! www.petitiononl...
Everyone go here for The Mark Farner interview about The Legendary Shea Stadium Concert in July of 1971.

Im sitting here lonely like a broken man.
I serve my time doin the best I can.
Walls and bars they surround me.
But, I dont want no sympathy.
No baby, no baby,
All I need is some tender lovin.
To keep me sane in this burning oven.
And, when my time is up, youll be my reefer.
Life gets worse on gods green earth.
Be my reefer, got to keep smokin that thing.
No, no, no, no, no, no.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
I said now baby ... baby ..., let me smoke it ... smoke it ...
Makes me feel good ... feel good, yes, I feel good ... ahhhhh ...
Yes, I feel alright ... feel alright ..., yes, I feel alright ... feel alright ...
Yes, I feel alright ... ahhhhh ...
Ohhhhh ...
Ice cold water is runnin through my veins.
They try and drag me back to work again.
Pain and blisters on my mind and hands.
I work all day making up NICKEL (burlap) bags.
The oats theyre feeding me are driving me wild.
I feel unhappy like a new born child.
Now, when my time is up, you wait and see.
These walls and bars wont keep that stuff from me.
No, no, baby,
Wont keep that stuff from me.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
I need you right now mama.
I need you right now baby.
Right by my side, honey.
All night long.
Make me feel alright ...
Yes, all ..., yes, all ..., yes, all ... alright.
You better come on up and get down with me.
Ill make you feel real good, just you wait and see.
Make me feel alright ..., yes, I feel alright ...
Yes, all ..., yes, all ..., yes, alright.

Me too, I discovered them at 13, with the " On time " album. it was 1975 and me and my 12 year old brother ate it up. and then I ran out and got the red album and I was a lifelong fan. seen them a couple times and seen their own bands a few times. I think Marks band is better than don and Mels band. I met Mark after a show and got a picture with him. Although my favorite album is " American band " , written , Composed and sung and played by Don Brewer. Dons as good as Mark. He does half the songs and albums. I love " Born to die " a mish-mash of groove, soul and metal , Brillant.

Watch and observe, children. They PLAY their instruments and sing with competence. They know their instruments and have spent a lot of time practicing and learning their skill. No Autotune. No computerization doing it for them. This is something called talent. Talent was a skill from decades ago before Autotune, before computerization, before the record industry picked young people to become stars based on visual appeal and how far a person would go with publicity stunts to create shock value. These talented musicians of the past had creativity, commitment, flair, skill, and put in a lot of time writing and polishing their songs. Many of them read what is called sheet music. Sheet music is a kind of language for music using what is called notes. Sheet music and notes kind of equate to learning how to write language and use what is called grammar. Grammar are the rules and guidelines of language. Music has a grammar to it, as well. In both writing language and music, creativity may be used to create magnificent songs, such as the one on this video. However, you will have to learn what is called discipline. Discipline requires something called work. Discipline and work will give you the means to learn how to actually sing and play instruments on your own without computerized assistance. Once you become good with singing and playing instruments, something called your self-esteem will improve. You will develop a sense of what is called accomplishment, like these young lads in the video.

I will tell you all this. I bought them red album that has this song on it, "Inside Looking Out," I saw them twice in concert, 1971 & 1972. Then a few decades later I heard Mark Farner had become a born again Christian and was coming to town with a new band so me, my wife and a couple friends went and saw him at a club, I was about 10' away Mark sounded as good as ever, I yelled out inside looking out and he played it, goosebumps ran up and down my arms and the hairs stood up on my arms and neck. I believe he's still touring.
