Thank you so much for this video. In my case, logic board on wiper motor was shorting out due to getting wet. As I uncover the problem, the board itself never got wet. It was because of the wiring harness going to the wiper motor was full of water. What caused this, is the harness is pinned to the plastic gutter/wiper housing; water got to the pin then leaked onto wire cluster, then to the port. Replaced motor, cleaned contacts, closed off hole for pin and tucked wire over the brake booster I believe. Fixed! Couldn't have done it without this video as I don't have the dealer service manual or alldata, etc. Thank you so much! You helped out a fellow mechanic from several hours of scratching my head.

Heya Eric! As a ford hater since my very first new vehicle (1993 Ford Exploder) I since got caught in the quagmire of P71’s! Loads of trepidation but this Panther is a real vehicle! Everytime I google a repair you come up. So afraid of the normal sliced hands under dash, fried wires, bs tire blowouts, you have helped me get my faith back for Ford (If it was a police vehicle or a 7.3 diesel) as my wipers failed on my 99 panther this video popped up! I was injured and had to call in a buddy to sort it out! He nailed it with this video (apart from a linkage upside down) you are awesome sauce! While he was doing that I replaced a Toyota 25 Sas forklift starter motor! If you ever have to do that use a broom after removing the floor plate and jam it down in line with the starter motor to move your hand up and under too find the lower starter motor bolt. Don’t forget to move the ground wire to the top bolt! The next guy will love you! Keep up the great videos!

Eric O thanks for the video. Been watching your videos for a long time but this issue pertains to my car and watching you replace the wiper motor made my life so much easier. My wiper motor has the module built into it and water got into it over time so it was going full goblin mode turning my wipers on randomly and my washer fluid. Had a similar issue last year and replaced the multi function stalk and for whatever reason that fixed it temporarily. Last week we got some crazy rain and the issue returned. Figured it had to be the whole motor assembly. Noticed after replacing the motor my wipers sit parked down further. Probably was going bad for a long time.
@x2WheelThrottle7 жыл бұрын
thanks alot man, great vid, had it done in an hour and a half, in my 2004 grand marquis. at first i went after the multifunction switch and it wasn't the problem, then replaced the motor and now all works great. if your troubleshooting i would say 90% motor, 10% multifunction switch, possibly the LCM (lighting control module) recall but doubtful. due to the fact that I was having problems and first did the multifunction switch, didn't fix, then had the car into the dealer for the (LCM) recall, still bad wipers, replaced motor and all was fixed. Just a thought I sealed the motor housing with RTV to ensure that it would seal off excess water getting into the motor. Thanks again.

I certainly appreciate this Sir. I'll be doing the ww motor on an 08 Marquis tomorrow. After 2 sprayer pumps in 1 yr , I'm almost certain it's the motor itself. Wipers work good , occasionally they'll run a tad longer than they should but the sprayer works and then doesn't. And then does and then doesn't again. Brand new Sprayer pump and initially didn't work. A little while later was fine.

I have a 2000 MGM. Worst wiper system ever - especially in winter. Setup is similar, but 2000 model year have wipers that sit down below the hood line on a piece of plastic instead of on the glass windshield. This causes all sorts of problems with wiper distortion and premature blade failure. I get about 3 months from wiper blades no matter what brand. Good to see Ford remedied this problem on later models. Last of the body on frames. A little piece of America died when these cars were discontinued. Hit an interstate highway with a Panther and you will see what I mean. TY for the video.

@thetinpin7 жыл бұрын
For reference, at 9:22 that shit in the cowl there is why those fail - the drain hole is tiny and gets clogged easily causing the PC board that lives on that motor to fail. You _can_ remove that 2nd cover without the first bit removed if you are careful to do the *_required_* cleaning to keep those from failing in the future... it's what I did every couple months while my 09 was parked outside, and once or twice a year now since I garage my Vic now. I found completely saturated mud in there once and decided to stop parking under a tree.
@thetinpin7 жыл бұрын
When I bought my Vic the pissers didn't work but the wipers did (of course I forgot to check that ONE thing) and I was next to broke from just buying the car. My father stepped up and decided to actually take it to a Ford dealer (his choice) to get it fixed. Well.... they were IDIOTS and couldn't correctly diagnose the problem. They re-ran a wire the 1st time... claimed it fixed the problem. It didn't work in the parking lot. They looked at it again and replaced the multi-function switch on my column. It worked ONCE in their lot. I got it home and it stopped working. I opened up that 2nd small cover and found the drain was clogged with wet debris. I looked up a wiring diagram... and guess what? I discovered that there was logic on the motor for controlling the pissers (for some reason) and I put the _complex_ puzzle together: wet debris + PC board = crusty failure. _They didn't even look in the cowl knowing there was logic in there!_ *I was PISSED!* I dumped the wiring diagram on to my tablet and went to the dealer to have a chat with the service manager. He said he was sorry about the problem not being fixed for the second time, but before I showed him the wiring diagram, I inquired about the guy that did the work. He told me that he was an electrical specialist that had been working on Fords for 15 years and that my problem must be _very_ strange and _awfully_ tough to diagnose. Then I told him about the wet debris and the logic on the motor. I was told he had never heard of logic being ON the motor, and that if there was, his guy would have checked that out thoroughly. Wiring diagram. Red face. Free repair. Rant over.
@klwthe3rd7 жыл бұрын
tin pin That example is exactly the problem I have all the time. I go to the dealership expecting the 20+ year specialist that knows their makes in and out. Yet my repairs always get the shit treatment by some mechanic that doesn't want to take the time to diagnose the problem properly. Then I have to go back to the service manager and bitch about why they didn't follow the correct diagnostic procedure outlined in the official service manual? Then I get the deer caught in the headlights look. Fuck I hate incompetent people.
@thetinpin7 жыл бұрын
Yeah... Call me crazy for expecting a little more professionalism than that at a dealership, I guess. I know it's not a super interesting thing to diagnose, but there was snow in the forecast so it was very important to me since I parked outside. I imagine my car got an eye roll when it showed up in his garage before the chat I had with that manager the way I was treated. Ugh, sorry, this video _precisely_ struck a sore spot with me.

My '86 Grand Marquis is still on it's OE wiper motor at 249k miles (parked for the winter now)! No plastic, cowl, or 100 fasteners to remove - just unbolt the motor, wiper linkage, and disconnect plug, and it's out. She's pretty close to the intake plenum, so that may have to be loosened - guess I'll cross that bridge IF that day comes. :)

The wipers on my Marquis are going nuts when it rains and I haven't got the money for a new wiper motor at this time, going to try opening up the module and cleaning whatever corrosion etc I can find and seal it up with RTV so no more water gets in there. In case he didn't cover it in the previous diagnosis video, two things can cause this and other issues with the wiper system: Bad motor and bad multi-function switch. If the problem is intermittent the way to know which is which is, if it's intermittent *_during a key cycle,_* then it's the switch. If it's intermittent depending on the key cycle, *as in you turn the key on and, say the wipers don't work or the squirters won't squirt **_for that whole key cycle,_* but on another key cycle everything works fine for the whole time the key stays on, then it's the motor.

Does anyone know if those aluminum bushings located on the shafts which the wiper arms attach to are replaceable? A friend of mine had his windshield replaced by one of those discount auto glass places, and their service technician just ripped the arms off of the car without undoing that little catch. Afterwards he tried to glue the arms onto the remaining shaft with epoxy, and but of course that didn't work. I went out the wrecking yard and tried to pull those bushings off of the mechanism, but those bushings would not budge.

I have a problem with my wipers on my 07 grand marquis, the wipers only work on high and the wiper fluid doesn’t work, it’s either the multifunctional switch that controls turn signals, wipers and high beams or it’s the motor. Odd thought that they kept this design from the early 90s that long, I did this on my '93 Crown Victoria and it was just about identical, the connector was different because of the fact theres less technology in the older model, but its nice to see that they kept that structural design and didnt just keep changing it over and over again.

Thumbs up nuts and bolts video. Off topic question, is a fuel injector cleaner kit worth a $350 cost (OTC 7649A plus extra adapters)? Never saw one used in the SMA shop.
@jimzivny15547 жыл бұрын
Sandbag1300 Good morning Sandbag1300, I'll give you my two cents on the subject. I worked on heavy trucks and equipment for about 20yrs and rebuilt countless diesel injectors however they were made to be serviceable. Modern gas engine injectors are basically sealed throw away pieces. My last 10 yrs working was as a service mgr in Ford LM dealers and we did sell injector flushes, I found if the injectors had varnish from crap gasoline or lack of maintenance(fuel filter repl ect) the flush might help, if the injectors had a real problem it was best to replace them. If they are high mileage or the car had bad overheating issues they would cause a comeback even if the flush helped temporarily. Thats just been my experience.
@Sandbag13007 жыл бұрын
James, thank you for the detailed reply. Over the last two years I have been storing my 87,000 original miles 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee during the 7 non-snow months in a humid 100+ degrees F garage. When I put it back in service the fuel trims are high at 10+ percent total each bank. Last year, after testing injector flow, I replaced all 8 injectors with OEM remans ($40 each) and problem was solved. This year, problem is back. I had the engine smoked and found no vacuum leaks. Guess is that the ethanol separated in the rail, even though I added fuel stabilizer, and clogged up the injectors with sticky corn oil residue. I am thinking that power cleaning the injectors will solve the problem and save me $$ over the upcoming years. Never saw a SMA video on the subject so I am second guessing my potential $350 solution.
@jimzivny15547 жыл бұрын
Sandbag1300 Sounds like you're doing everything right for storage, in your case a cleaning would probably purge the fuel system of all the deposits, especially ethanol gas which causes a list of troubles and definitely breaks down into separate components when sitting for long periods. For home use I'd try one of the kits I've seen at the auto parts store, they include a pressurized can of cleaner and a hose to hook to the fuel rail. Before you spend big bucks on a tool that would sit on the shelf most times. Although most guys only need a small excuse to buy new tools, myself included! You could rig up a homemade injector test n flush rig. PineHollowDiagnostic KZbin channel (Ivan, one of Eric's buddy's) had a good video on testing injectors at home. Hope this helps
