Rock Soup is the story of how the "Kick Out the Jams" historical live concert recordings were made at the Grande Ballroom and in Detroit with the band's permissions. The Grande Ballroom was the home of Detroit Rock and Roll.
I was a 15 year old who loved music and was driven by my passion to be a music producer. The bands were grateful to be able to hear how they sounded live on stage when portable recording equipment was in its infancy. These recordings are not bootlegs.
The live tapes were made by placing microphones on the stage for each instrument and capturing the P.A. system for the vocals. Then I mixed each song live to capture the solos and nuances and dynamics of the each performance. The was no overdubbing,
The MC5, James Gang and Amboy Dukes recordings accurately capture the excitement and musicianship of these historic live performances. The Detroit Historical Museum has all three MC5, James Gang and Amboy Dukes concert performances in their repository for preservation. Each performance set is about 45 minutes long.
