The compass shows the "direction of the exit" but not necessarly the route to get there. It's in the recovery point tips. It also spins faster as you get closer to the exit.

Grandia is one of my top 10 JRPGs of all time personally. There are moments in this game where i genuinely cried from both moments of joy and sadness. The Cinematography in this game is quite amazing at times especially in the more grand or emotional moments. The characters are fun, flawed and memorable. The battle system is still being copied by other games to this day. And the story is just Grand. I love the game mechanics and the pace of the story telling. Now it's true the game has flaws but I still love this game. I always go back to it every couple of years to re-experience the scope and scale of it's design. If there was ever a game I would wish for a remake, it would be this one.

I guess our opinions didn't clash that much. You're right about there being not much character development, but I feel the game more than makes up for it with its goofiness and charm. OF course, the combat also is a big reason why I like this game so much. The second one is even better IMO, much better characters, a bit of a darker story, and the same great battle system. If you are going to play that one, try to get it on Dreamcast or the HD Remaster. The PS2 version has some lighting and graphical glitches, plus it will occasionally freeze after a battle.
@StewTube5 жыл бұрын
Yeah there were definetly some things to make up for that lack of character development! I enjoyed the combat alot in this one. Definetly getting it for dreamcast! I ove my dreamcast and I need to find a reason to play it lol

I really disagree about the whole dungeon/town/dungeon town thing, and characters DO develop overtime, please pay attention to the story! (facepalm) It's a story-driven RPG.

Heyyy to each there own lol. Grandias a good game it just wasnt as impactful to me personally as say a game like Xenogears. I didnt grow up playing the Grandia series so maybe thats why I feel the way I do. It has several other redeeming qualities though! Its a gold game despite my few critiques.

@@StewTube sorry if i sounded a bit harsh, i didn't mean to be. This is a story and a game very close to my heart. I don't liike RPGs that make you walk over the world map, which is where we differ. I feel the restrictions on the map where down to not being able to change timelines in certain areas due to memory restrictions. :)

Your okay buddy lol my feelings arent hurt. I enjoyed the characters of grandia alot as well as the art style. I feel like an honest review both praises a game and critiques it. It cant all be good lol. The game makes up for a lack of a real world map by having beautiful enviroments and towns!

Great review! It sounds like you didn't notice this in your playthrough, but while the red bit on the compass does always point north, the needle on it points to your destination and spins faster the closer you get! You can toggle it to point it to the entrance instead by pressing L2/R2.

My favorite thing about Grandia is the focus on adventure. I get tired of politics, wars, and saving the world being the main plot points. Nevermind, the music is the best part.

This is an excellent review. I've watched a few "reviews" of this game, and you're the only one who pointed out the glaring fact that this RPG has no overworld exploration. I had to watch four videos to finally get that info. That's a crucial fact to mention, because lack of exploration is a (near) deal-breaker to many people, such as me. There's a reason most RPGs rely on an explorable overworld - it gives you some freedom to move and changes things up. You made a great point about the town/dungeon/town/dungeon pattern, because when you base a game on that, you'd better have other things to do, such as move around and explore. Lots of people mostly care about story and they're actually happy not to have to explore anything so they can just get on with the story. But to me this game sounds like a visual novel plus battles. Thanks for preventing me from wasting my money.

I will say my opinion of this game has grown fonder since playing but I still stand by the fact that it's a downside that there's no world map and he fact that the game is indeed very linear. The story and characters and art style are pretty good though. The ending is also pretty nice. The combat is pretty decent too. All things considered your not missing much if you pass this up. Xenogears is a better experience by far.

Grandia changed my life. I love this game so much: The music, The characters, The voices (japanese obviously) and The story. It's a very touching JRPG.

It was definetly an adventure. I think I would have a stronger bond with it had I experienced it back in the 90s. Definetly a good game and pretty ambitious of them to include voice acting back then!

The compass doesn't point north. It points to where you want to go.Or, if you press the triggers it cycles to where you came in from. Also, while I agree that Grandia is neither difficult in it's gameplay nor complex in it's narrative, it is still extremely fun to play and memorable to experience. It borrows quite a bit of inspiration from Miyazaki's Castle in the Sky, which I'd love to see more of, honestly. The game is busting with wonder at the world, and the sense of adventure. Things we just don't see anymore (except maybe Breath of the Wild). Even Grandia 2 goes for a more cynical outlook. Grandia 1 feels optimistic, which is rare in a genre dominated by depressed amnesiac loner-type heroes. And it manages to tell a coming of age story for the main character better than most animes. I never had tears of joy in my eyes at the end of a game, like I did the first time I finished this one. Never have since. That said, the port of the Switch is basic. REALLY basic. About all they did was polish the sprites a bit, and do half-assed support for widescreen displays. Neither of those things can be turned off to play the game in it's original presentation. A pity, they could have used a little bit of extra love to really make the port a must-have. As it is, it's great for people who never got to play the original, or people like me that want to re-live old memories while on the go. But it's not what I would call a "definitive" release.
@StewTube5 жыл бұрын
I think you made a good point about how its optimistic and fun loving in a genre full of god killing and broodyness. I enjoyed the ending alot. Not many jrpgs have a happy ending like grandia. I just wish there was more of a world map. You bring up some good points though.

As much as I prefer the PAL box art over the NTSC art most of the times, I have to go with the NTSC cover of Grandia this time around. The godawful Ubisoft exclusive label plastered on a cover of 2D character portraits is too much to bear.
