when the sand is at the top, the top heavy sand timer wants to flip over, causing it to lean against the inside of the glass tube and wedge itself in place. when the sand is more evenly distributed in the timer it stops leaning and floats up. very clever. :3

rdizzy1 There'll always be some give, even if the hourglass appears to completely fill the tube. If the hourglass actually *was* a perfectly snug fit it would never move anyway, because it'd be held in place all around by the tube.

when the top half of the hourglass is full it wants to flip so it creates friction with the walls, thats why it doesent rise. when tehre is less sand on the top half the force gets weaker and the hourglass is free to float.
@Cubeazza9 жыл бұрын
Teofil Raicu It has to be friction
@DamianReloaded9 жыл бұрын
Indeed. In other words: the center of mass in the hourglass is "more centered" in relation to the cylinder so the hourglass wants to "turn less" or "collide less" with the walls until it ultimately wants to go straight up.
@Cubeazza9 жыл бұрын
Damian Reloaded or basically the top is heavier so it wants to go down and flip over, causing it to push against the glass and causing friction to hold it there.
@DamianReloaded9 жыл бұрын
Cubeazza yep. still the buoyancy force is greater than the total weight of the hourglass. ^_^

In the first timer. The floating egg timer. The sand is acting like a ballast. When you invert the tube, the sand timer becomes unstable and wants to flip so the sand is at the bottom and the air at the top. This self righting mechanism is used in ships, the the centre of gravity wants to be as low as possible, so the half with the most weight wants to be on the bottom. So when the sand is at the top this inbalance causes the egg timer to try and flip, but it is restricted by the tube. The egg timer pushing against the side of the tube has enough friction to stop it from rising until enough of the sand has flowed in too the bottom half re distributing the weight and stopping the egg timer from wanting to spin. This wouldn't work with out the restrictive tubing. Eg at the bottom of a pool. It would just flip and rise up before the sand had a chance to move to the other chamber.
@tonysuffolk46518 жыл бұрын
+Nick Henman Exactly. You explained this very clearly. When I looked at this the first time I doubted the perspex tube would create enough friction so I gave it a try with a weighted wooden stick. The real skill is to make the overall density of the sand timer just slightly less than the density of water.
The air from the bottom of the sand timer rises up to the top level, causing it to float

Hypothesis: when the sand is on the top, the bottom is more buoyant. Therefore it wants to flip(moment about the center). This causes enough static friction to keep the sand timer at the bottom. when the moment (tendency to flip in this case) has been reduced "enough", the static friction isn't "enough" to keep it at the bottom, therefore it rises to the top. Reply if you agree/disagree.
