There's a moment in Skypea with Luffy trapped inside the snake that made me so sad. When Nami and the weird old man are inside the giant ass snake, Luffy shows up with tears in his eyes saying something along the lines of, 'I thought I was the only one here' or 'I thought I was alone.' The fact that Luffy isn't afraid of anything aside from being alone gives me that oh shit moment. I feel like Oda could make us feel very bad for our rubber boy by imprisonment in isolation OR a very very sad backstory reveal of Luffy being abandoned and left alone for a long time; either was I'm here for it but I don't want to be here for it lol.

I'm not sure but the isolation trauma may have something to do with the times when Garp made Luffy survive on his own in very dangerous environments from a young age? But it's just a suggestion. It's probably not right.

Idk I guess Luffy and the others described it as tough love, but if it turns out that Luffy’s fear of isolation partially (or even entirely) stems from what Garp did to him then he very well could be... which would be contradictory as we know that Garp cares and loves Luffy so it would be a weird situation... It could also be said for Yasopp who shown to care for Usopp, and he also talked about him to his nakama and Luffy several time, but in the end he still abandoned them which led Usopp to be the kind of liar he was/is :( But he’s still proud of his dad and that he’s a pirate nonetheless, same with Luffy, he loves his grandpa... it’s all so complicated

@@pannajohns5255 I feel like a major part has to do with people always leaving Luffy. Not many stayed with him during his childhood. His grandpa was an often missing presence, his parents were nowhere in sight and Luffy even thought he was a miracle child (surprised he even had a dad), the first pirate friends he made left on their journey (Shanks), and then he had to witness Sabo's "death" as a child. Even in the village, it didn't seem like Luffy had a friend his age until Sabo and Ace came along.

The yin/yang of the One Piece villains and their stories is what makes them so interesting. Doflamingo wouldn't have been my favourite villain, if his back story hadn't existed. The fact that his evil has a plausible explanation, coupled with his genius as well as his volatile and unpredictable nature, is what makes him so interesting! I guess you could say that the harrowing twisting of the mind that made him like he is now, is morbidly interesting. Fujitora is also one of those mysteries that I'm eager to know about at some point!

Moria's crew is actually more messed up than you explained here. Perona was on Moria's crew for 10 years before Kuma 'pawed' her to Kuraigana island. Meaning she was 13 when she joined the crew which has both Absalom; a sexual predator with the power to turn invisible and Hogback; a necrophile. I thought the scene in which Pekoms tries to turn into his sulong form but is brutally stopped by the Big Mom Pirates was also pretty violent and dark. It wasn't shown explicitly in the manga but the Big Mom's sons were talking about crushing his eyes. And they did it. Or at least I think they did cuz they swing down an axe on him and he screams. I don't think that those things push the limits of the shonen, because dark scenes and violence were always common in shonen, in fact I think One Piece deviates a lot from these aspects, to the point where a character dying is very rare in OP, and most of the time they return to life because plot reasons, and sometimes, only sometimes, One Piece resembles a traditional shonen manga when those scenes in the video happens.
