It was a top tier arc, but certain aspects didn’t get the pages they needed to uphold the quality of storytelling we have come to expect from Oda. I do think that it was a shame that Kaido's worldview wasn't expanded on a bit more. I felt like there was a hint at a really interesting character exploration of someone who relentlessly pursued personal strength in order to find agency and happiness only to realize at some point that he had become the strongest single being and was still as far away from creating the world he wanted as he ever was, which is what drove him to be both suicidally depressed and prone to finding what pleasure he could in crushing the agency of others.

I feel like Kaido is a character that we will understand more of his motive as the story goes on, an example being that he is another puppet fitting onto the stage like Dolflamingo only so that he could balance the world at someones will. If Yamato got a place among the strawhat, that would break the general flow of a character becoming one, and feel undeserved after you read it. We guys feel that it was a very long set up because we've been reading this arc for four years irl, but someone who reads it now that the arc is done, will take no more than 2 or 3 weeks. It's astounding how an arc this long still missed so much and had such a rushed ending. I believe that so much of it could have been made more compact. For example, what's the point of drawing out suspense in long battles only for them to finish so disappointingly? Instead, the arc was a little scatterbrained and felt way too slow a lot of the time. It shouldn't be necessary to wait that many actual years for a satisfying story arc.

It's amazing that one story arc can really highlight both Oda's strengths and weaknesses as an author. I want to believe he has a plan in motion and that Yamato will come back and join in a big way, but I still can't get over the way things ended for the character in Wano. To build up a character for two years of real world time and then at the very last possible second reveal the character won't join the main cast, it feels less like trolling and more like flat out cruelty.

I think it could be rather "simple" to make it believable. Maybe Green bull could have been more dangerous or shanks Intervention coming later. Yamato says something like "I can fight with you, If i stay on wano and swear to protect the Island until Momo, the heir of Oden, surpasses me" and then it would have been understandable. Kaido beat luffy like 7 times, after besting the samurai, Yamato, Taking attacks from Kidd law and Zoro AND while expending energy holding up Onigashima. one of the few things Wano delivered on imo was Kaidos monstrous strength. He truly seemed unbeatable until Luffy got an ass pull power up to do so.

I totally agree with you!! I also have a few more grips about this arc is that by the 3rd act, I totally forgot many of the characters in Wano and couldn't care less about many characters and some of the fights felt rushed and not satisfying. Even on re-reading it in a binge still not good enough as the resolution of this arc is totally not satisfying like Dressrosa or WCI. I really hope Oda could do pacing better in the next arc.

Man, all these years and I didn't know epitome was pronounced like that! Anyways, I agree on all points made here. I can see why Yamato couldn't join the Strawhats yet, considering his/her knowledge from Oden's log and giving away too much info about the One Piece. However, a situation such as this didn't lead to Robin telling the crew where Pluton is, even though she's known its (approximate) location for *checks calendar*... about 20 years, now. But it wasn't handled well, at all. If there had just been a small panel or two where Yamato tells Luffy "Yeah, I'm staying in Wano until Momo is strong enough to protect it. But I'm making up a story to stay here, so he won't be disappointed.", that would have been fine with me.

Then Luffy almost died and awakened his devil fruit and just like with Katakuri, he's no longer doing only physical damage, it's psychological too. I think that's a very simplistic answer. One, because knowing how to pace your manga properly is supposed to be part of his job. Oda is a professional manga creator. Wano was already the longest arc. Two, the release date of the epilogue chapters wasn't really affected by the movie. If Oda needed more time for the epilogue, he could have extended those chapters a little bit more without any problem. If all that was required was a tie-in, then he could accomplish this in a few other ways without difficulty.

With all that's needed for a character to die, I still can't believe Kaido and Big Mom are dead. In One Piece I can't believe any death without someone with knowledge, normally the narrator, say they are truly dead. That didn't happen with those 2. They went underground, that's it. For all we know they're in a pretty bad shape and trapped in Pluton. For Queen and King it's a little more believable, but still, green bull could have just taken almost of their energy, but capture them nonetheless and taken them to the Navy Headquarters because it was never stated that they died, only just implied. I need to talk about this: Yamato will not spend a week or two travelling Wano. I think the purpose is to understand the people, and live with them. Help rebuild it and thus develop a relationship with its people. At this moment, who is Yamato to the people of Wano? Kaido's kid. Oden spent many years with the country's citizens and gained their respect. I think Yamato wants to go through that same journey and build a similar respect. I agree that it's a sudden change of heart, but I disagree that the adventure will take a couple of weeks.

I get people's frustration with Kaido as a whole. But I think I get his deal. Kaido grew as a warrior and stronger than most kinda like Bullet but stronger. He then met Linlin, Shirohige and Rocks which were all stronger than him and had massive ambitions. He felt like he found his place. Then we have god valley, which we know nothing about and could explain Kaido's motivation regarding Joyboy and Wano. However, even without knowing about GV, I believe once Rocks died, Kaido only had WB as a rival and the latter wasn't interested, so that made Kaido the strongest once Linlin gave him his DF. To understand Kaido, you gotta think about the fact that he had no rival and thus, no motivation anymore, he was so bored that he wanted to start the biggest war ever to satisfy his battle hunger. But When Luffy finally proved to be a worthy opponent and a decent successor to Joyboy, I think Kaido kinda let go of all his plans and bet on Luffy, if he could beat him fair and square, he could then stepback and let the new dawn rise

There's so many missed opportunities and loose threads in Wano that you can make a blanket out of it. These are just the ones at the top of my head: -Nidai Kitetsu being forgotten -Big Mom Pirates and their dumb waterfall predicament -Carrot awkwardly being shoved aside -Yamato not joining the crew after screaming that she will 24/7 -Zoro's possible connection to the Shimotsuki family -Numbers being absolutely useless after all the silhouette hype -Kaido's joke of a flashback -Big Mom randomly being delegated to Law and Kid despite WCI arc setting up her battle with Luffy -Never finding out the real name of Onigashima (though it could be a future plot point) -Luffy reuniting with Marco -Hiyori being the one to take down Orochi -Sasaki maybe having a connection to Kokoro which gives emotional weight to his battle with Franky -Otama being a Kurozumi (a proper revelation would've been better than small random hint on her parents' graves) -The Nika thing is also pretty random and while I can accept this as an award for Luffy coming so far, I wish there was more foreshadowing to it -Rushed ending with that awful line about the "Kurozumi" from a Kozuki of all people (yes I know it was a pun and the official translation changed it to singular but it still leaves a bad taste in my mouth because the line Japanese can be interpreted as plural) I did enjoy the arc as a whole but I'm not generous enough to put it in my top 5 like GLR. I don't think it was rushed so much Oda just wasting important panel time on random characters reaction shots. Hopefully, the Void Month gave Oda enough time to recharge for the Final Saga so that we don't run into these kinds if issues again.
@bendysbrother74472 жыл бұрын

@alejandroabraham42502 жыл бұрын
Not to mention we have the same ticking time bomb island that is about to be destroyed because "insert reason here". It's also pretty lame that so much time was invested into the new characters that ultimately had zero importance moving forward and relegating the Strawhats to the back burner. No one got any sort of development outside of Luffy and like how it was mentioned in the video, it was forced. At least Momo got a sick glowup.

One of Oda's biggest weaknesses as a writer is how easily he gets side tracked with stuff not immediately relevant to the story. One of the anime's greatest weaknesses is that it can't catch up to the manga, so whenever it gets close it has to either draw things out excessively, or try to create filler content. I think with Wano they've finally realized that Oda's problem of extra content, and the anime's problem of a lack of extra content, go hand in hand. Oda can simply take those non-essential scenes, give them to the anime team, and all of a sudden Oda has a more streamlined story, while the anime team has 'canon filler' to help them stay behind the manga. With the end of Wano we've seen they clearly need to work on what details to pass on to the anime team, but I do think it's a good way to ensure the anime stays interesting to manga and anime fans, while at least giving Oda a chance at finishing the anime on his proposed timeline. So I'm personally expecting every arc will be like Wano from now on, where the anime is filling in all the gaps Oda leaves behind. If I'm right then scenes like Yamato's decision to stay behind, the conflict with Greenbull, Zoro going to Ryuma's shrine, all that ending stuff that was glossed over in the manga will get covered by the anime. Of course there's a chance I'm wrong, and this isn't the strategy they're using, but I really hope it is.

Unpopular oppinion but Wano pretty much solidified my stance on Zorro. As in I will never really like him as a character as much as I like the rest of the crew. I mean at this point he only exists for cool fights and nothing alse aside from an occasional fight with Sanji. This was the best chance to expand his character/story but it either never happened or it was off screen and instead we got the same shtick as every other arc

About the Jinbe appereance, I must give credit to him at least. I mean, sure, it's TOO convinient, but I think it's part convinience and part luck. He didn't know about the raid, but he knew that he had to go to Wano, and as a Gyojin, he had to go swimming, so it COULD be feasable that he arrived just in time to identify Mugiwara's Sunny and see that they were under attack.

Wano being rushed just because of a movie and one that I personally didn’t really care for was honestly one of the most disappointing things for me in the whole of one piece. Had it not been rushed it would had fixed a lot of the small issues that wano had. I had 100% faith in Oda up until now. Now it’s like 70%.

I agree with everything you said, especially that the Chimera Ant Arc was the third best arc in One Piece. Classic Oda at his best, great characters, though I must say it didn't really fit the tones of One Piece and felt a little too dark.
