Allow me to spread some negativity and cynicism from a one piece reader since 2004.... this will be bad for one piece in general... are marvel comics fans happy with whats happened to their franchise? How about old school star wars fans? Make no mistake, once Oda isnt involved, this will go the same way as every franchise in the modern media... it will turn woke eventually and it will bring in people who will feel entitled to change everything about this story...

@@hariman7727 It's also just a really wholesome, unique, fun show in an era of entertainment that's teaming with deplorable human behavior and dark, depressing themes - cynicism, hopelessness, backstabbing, murder, cheating, forced meta humor, forced messaging, forced political confrontation, the horrors of capitalism & war; just the general dismal reality of society and so on. The setting is wacky, bizarre, unique and just all-around fresh for western audiences, which offers a nice change of pace from all of the grimdark medieval-fantasy shows and repetitive, formulaic superhero adaptations. The showrunners clearly respect & admire the source material, and were dead-set intent on delivering a satisfying adaptation for fans of the manga & anime. Not to mention the diversity of the main cast isn't forced or altered at all; they're all the same ethnicities as the original creator of the manga intended them to be. Honestly, it's not a surprise that it's a hit.

Just something to understand. One Piece is Eiichiro Oda's baby. He has been writing, re-writing, designing characters and such since he was a child. There are interviews where he shows his dog-eared old text books from his time at school just full of illustrations and notes. He'll be sat on panels and doing other stuff while casually doodling One Piece characters. He is a creator that loves his creation to an almost obsessive degree. So its great to see something made with such passion getting a good adaptation.

I think Oda's involvement was important, but it's also good to highlight that Matt Owens, one of the writers and showrunners for the live action, is a genuine fan of the series that wanted and respected Oda's input. You can find videos of him talking to content creators in the One Piece KZbin community. I've listened to him talk about One Piece and he's probably more knowledgable and passionate about One Piece than 99.9% of fans of the series, and that includes me. It'd be very hard to fake the hours of talking about One Piece he has online. His goal going into this was to bring the source material to life in a TV show format.
@Avarn388
@Avarn388 Жыл бұрын
@PiecefullKaos I listened to him briefly and he seemed like he knew his stuff. I try to avoid cast and showrunners of series before things come out so as I can go into a series as clear as possible and if I like it, I go back and watch the interviews. Owens and the cast very much were diehard One Piece fans and wanted to make a series that was good on its own merits that honored and respected the material it was based off. And that is good. We need more folks like this who recognize what they have been given is important and in turn, work hard to produce something great.

I adored Nami's arc. She was strong without being a girl boss, and she was allowed to break down and be vulnerable. The boys were allowed to protect and help her and it drew them closer as a crew. Masterfully done, I haven't had a show elicit such strong emotions from me in a long time.

You probably wont believe me but in the manga/anime it hits even harder. Im glad people are loving the LA. In a perfect world everyone who likes the LA would go and try the original source. But I know not everyone enjoys anime/manga or is open to try it. And it's ok. At least the LA is bringing OP to this group of people, which imo was its main mission.

@@PeasantForADay I was using the iconic Nami scene as a sort of litmus test for whether or not the live-action was going to be alright or if I would be able to keep watching more seasons of it. While I agree with you that it does hit a bit harder in the anime, I DO have to give the show runners due credit, and of course Emily Rudd's performance, I think they nailed it very well honestly! I really felt let down by most the flashbacks. Shanks really lacked the impact I feel he had in the anime and Usopp's flashback was just a joke of what it was in the anime. And while I loved the idea of moving the Kuro fight into the mansion, I really feel let down by the whole Syrup Village arc as a whole. That said, I really did like the LA and look forward to the Alabasta arc! I'm surprised but it managed to get my 60 year old mom into this story too LOL
@PeasantForADay

@@kamikaze.33 Thank you for the reply. I had no problem with the performance. I think the cast was spot on. Like you, I did not enjoy the changes in syrup village, but at the same time I loved Usopp. Now as for the Nami scene, I felt the passion of the director I appreciate the faithfulness to the anime and respect the acting part. But for me it could be built up better. I guess for me what brought it down was... *SPOILER FOR ANIME* ... the fact that the villagers did not know what Nami was going through until she told them. In the anime/manga they know what she is doing but choose not to tell her so that their hope won't weight on her decision to keep going or give up. But then again, I'm just nitpicking because I'm a die hard fan. All in all I'm with you. The LA was really good and brought OP to a lot more people which is the best I could ask for.
@lolipedofin
@lolipedofin Жыл бұрын
@@kamikaze.33 You really realize how the actors and creators truly respect and genuinely love the source material when you watch the scene. Yes they change some stuffs in the arc that left me scratching my head, they change the dialog a bit, when Luffy said he don't know anything about what's going on it's not really true because here he actually listened to Nojiko, they had to tone down the "ATARI MAE DAAA!!!" because it just doesn't work in LA.... But during the scene itself, you can see them tap into their core emotion and how they felt when they read the manga or watch the anime, and they acted it out so well... It doesn't matter that Usopp, Zoro, and Sanji were comically waiting in stand by pose 20m from where Nami and Luffy was talking, all people can see, even newcomers, is how furious the rest of the crews are for Nami. It was awesome. When you see the behind the scene, you'll realize that everyone know that this is the pivotal scene in the season and they prepared so well for it. two thumbs up for everyone involved.
@isaac3078
@isaac3078 Жыл бұрын
@@lolipedofinKinda, he listened to Nojiko BUT since Nojiko doesn't know NAMI was actually good, he was basically made to believe that Nami is a monster yet he chose to believe in her despite "not actually knowing what's going on" in that regard the LA was correct. Now had Nojiko known the truth and Luffy still listened to her story, then that line of him not knowing what's going on would have been wrong

Nami is actually kind of a girl boss, but a realistic one: she is not Harley Quinn with normal human strength who somehow can beat up bigger guys than her, she is not Captain Marvel who can down spaceships because she was given immense powers, she is not the Live Action Mulan who was born with magical abilities allowing her to fight better than all other guys around her. She is smart, cunning, can think quickly on her feet (like she did with Axe-hand Morgan), a capable thief and safe cracker. She is not overly strong like Luffy or Zorro, she is not an amazing fighter like Zorro or Sanji (she is somewhat capable, but she cannot take on a horde of Marines like Zorro and Luffy did), so she plays to her strengths and does what she can to survive. Sure, Luffy has the strength and heart, and Zorro has the strength, skills and loyalty, and Sanji has the skills, but Nami is possibly the smartest one of the lot of them, and amazingly, Nami does occasionally gets frustrated with Luffy being an idiot sometimes, but she appreciates he has a good heart and he comes through for his crew mates

Unironcially One Piece live action is an absolute triumph. Seriously, I had ZERO desires to watch this, having suffered through Bebop and other bad anime adaptations. However, this series proved me wrong. While making changes, the changes were good, serving the medium and keeping the core of the series intact. With stunning production value and excellent writing and a great cast, it was a series I deliberately took my time with to not waste it. All in all, Oda clearly cared to make sure the series didn’t get ruined and tomorrow studios learned their lesson from Bebop. And the cast and crew cared. But what sealed the deal was that it made me want to reread the east blue saga, something I was planning to do but now I definitely want to.

"tomorrow studios learned their lesson from Bebop" One Piece was in production same time as Bebop. They both got announced in 2017. There's this scene in episode 2 when Nami says that pirates are pirates, there is only one kind and then we get introduced to the Buggy pirates by them performing a literal clown show in a circus. This is such an amazing piece of worldbuilding and storytelling in one. It teaches the audience that this world is really wacky by our standards and pirates can literally look like anything, but that's simply how it works and it also shows how Nami perceives what being a pirate is because of her upbringing.

Listening to them talk about nami's reveal is so freaking surreal. To me one piece is this thing I've been in for over 20 years, and hearing people talk about it fresh, experiencing these things for the first time is just so odd. Even if I do consider the live action to be a watered down version, I guess Oda did get what he wants: he wants his story to be digested by literally everyone in the world and through the comic, the anime, cds, theater, and now the live action I'm starting to think he might actually be able to do it someday.

Something the live action left out about Sanji's character is the reason he only fights by kicking. His hands are the most important thing to him as a chef, so he doesn't want to damage them by striking people with them. And of course, he learned his kick-based style of fighting from Zeff, who the live action does point out was called "red leg Zeff" because his boots were always stained by the blood of his enemies. So it doesn't directly point out that Zeff taught Sanji his martial arts style, but there's enough there to pick up on it.

That doesn't automatically make the adaptation good. Was Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter better for having the author write the screenplay? Are any of those Nicholas Sparks adaptations really better with his involvement? Would The Devil Wears Prada have been with Lauren Weisberger's involvement? How many of the greatest book-to-film adaptations of all time actually had the writer's involvement? Fight Club? The Bridge on the River Kwai? The Color Purple? Lincoln? No Country For Old Men? Poldark? The Call of The Wild (1935)? Schindler's List? The Shawshank Redemption? Great how Mauler detailed the kind of "its just there" acceptance of the many outlandish details, and how quickly you adapt to accepting it. But only owing to the sincerity of the story and performances. Because THIS is what to my mind was the most impressive duplication from the manga and anime. Part of it is just a convention of anime but its particularly the case with Oda's work. This sense translated incredibly well.

Also the young zorro scene, what I liked about it was that he wanted the girl Kuina to be also good even though she said it that he eventually will be better but he wants her to be also better or equal to him. That was a great moment.

For anyone looking to check out the anime, definitely recommend the fan made recut "One Pace" of the original Japanese animation with English subtitles.. It removes a lot of filler. I love the earlier episodes, but for someone who hasn't seen a lot of anime it might be preferable.

The thing with "Characters don't do a wink and nudge at the audience" is sooooo important to sell this story, and i am glad they did it right. Like, nobody cared when the first guy they met at Baratie was a fishman - because these characters know fishmen exist, they aren't shocked or weirded out by his look. None of the marines does "WOOOOW HOW CAN HE DO THAT" when Garp throws a cannonball at Luffy. Nobody even mentions they are using god damn snails to comunicate, and snails Garp has have his facial hair. All that is treated organically, and i love it.

Only because Oda had control did it stay close to the original, they did well to condense 40+ episodes into 8 hours. They did cut a lot of the bond building between the crew especially with Usopp but again time constraints and probably budget. The main characters feel close to the originals with only minor difference, overall they did well to adapt them into live action. Its not without its criticism as Netflix couldn't help themselves as they did race change a few of the characters.

@@tobybigham4196 Indeed, but I'll give them credit in that the costumes for the characters was spot on and they were characterized well. Plus, it helps that the world of One Piece actually allows for these swaps to happen because it is a sea-based world where folks are traveling on ships and going to various islands.And One Piece fans we know how diverse the series is with different races, cultures, and societies. So it's not a big deal in this series.

@heraldofwar Indeed, but what time they had they maximized it very well. There weren't really any scenes within the adaptation I found were superfluous because the cast and writing were good. Heck, some of my favorite moments where just seeing the Straw Hats hanging out or having one to one conversations like with Luffy and Zorro.The adaptation struck a good balance with keeping what the characters were but not going too much into trying to be the manga and anime. It seems counterintuitive but while it matters to keep the core of the property in tact, what matters is adjusting things to work within the medium you are adapting for. It's clear the showrunners and writers knew they were writing for TV. Not a movie cut up into episodes, cough Disney +. A TV series. That, combined with Oda's supervision, helped a lot.

to be fair the only race swap that really bothered me because of how different it was the original was Nojiko. Lucky Roux also got race swapped but I can believe that guy was the best for that role because his big goofy grin looked perfect for the character.

It really is a pleasant surprise. For me, the key for a good show or movie is to make me feel excitement, fun, emotions. To make me relate with the characters and the story from the very beginning. One Piece is doing it! It reminds me of RRR, I mean the fantasy concepts are totally crazy, but I just embrace them happily. On the other hand, this makes me feel even sadder about what has happened to Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and so on...

I look at the live action One Piece, and it genuinely feels like the perfect combination of everything going right. They had the original creator helping to guide the show, the writers seem to be genuine fans of the source material or at the very least respect the source material, the production company clearly learned some valuable lessons from their last adaptation endeavor, the cast was carefully selected based on who would fit the role best, each actor was very dedicated to their role and took it seriously, the crew did their best to make the sets look as great as they could, and they did not use this show to push any political agenda. It was a show made for the fans of the original, by people who respected the original, overseen by the mastermind who came up with this silly pirate show to begin with. After being given so much garbage from film and TV for so many years, One Piece is a breath of fresh air

As long time Anime fan, i had least expectation for one piece live action because of the nature of the world of one piece and the tone of the show. But to my surprise they have managed to do justice to both and managed to capture the magic of the one piece, and i am confident the involvement of Oda had a major role in that. One piece has one of the craziest world i have come across and it would be a crazy challenge to adopt it to live action, but now i think they can do it, if season 1 is an indication of what is to come.

With how much of his life Oda has spent to write One Piece he wasnt going to let them butch it. He has said he only sleeps 3 hours a day and doesnt eat at his studio because he gets his best ideas when he is sleep deprived and starving. He only spends 1 day a week with his family as well. I dont think there is any other creator of anything in the world right now that is as dedicated to his art than Eiichiro Oda.
