There's another video that shows the most fascinating behaviour yesterday from Shabani, where he was trying his best to get Nene to leave the room (and presumably eat something). It was surreal seeing Shabani up on the top shelf part of the sub room where Nene / Ai usually go... he looked massive up there... he was even pulling the hammock to get her off it, and charging constantly, to demonstrate his will. It's great to see Nene eating something anyway!

I love this family so much. Shabani is a magnificent silverback, and he senses something wrong with Nene. Nene has been a tough old gal. I wish her many more elderly years on this earth with food health. This family would absolutely grieve without her.

I was worrying about something like this happening....all it takes is for the hands to not grab and its a very bad situation, but I know the staff will do the absolute best they can....there's a limit to intervention, and I know stress is the #1 thing to avoid.

her right leg is the injured leg. she appears to be weak from not eating, which makes her left leg look weak or injured even though it isn't.

I'm relieved to see Nene eating and active with the family. Her health is still concerning to me, but seeing her eat a little and move around is a good sign! For those getting angry at Annie for pestering Nene or bringing up Nene's treatment of Annie when she was young, please try to remember that these are gorillas doing gorilla things. The real story here after Nene's health, IMO, is watching Shabani being an absolutely marvelous silverback and keeping order over the troop. He's been close to Nene and watching over her for the last few days, and it's been wonderful to watch. Nene, my sweet crusty old lady, as always I wish you rest, health, and peace. ❤❤❤❤❤

Shabani is absolutely the BEST. It was good to see Nene eat but that hip or knee is the worst I’ve seen it. Annie almost caused Nene to fall. Nene is a tough old girl but I wish she could be separated from the others for a couple of days. I love Annie but if Nene falls from those top heights to the concrete floor, I’m not sure she would survive. I love this group and they show their love for Nene when she’s hurt❤ well, maybe not so much love from Annie but I understand she has her reasons😊. Get well soon you old grumpy cuttle bug!

I realize what is going on has raised all our emotions, but please refrain from calling Annie "nasty", saying that Nene deserves this or make judgments on Shabani's actions (or lack thereof). Overlaying human morals or norms does no one any good. They are *gorillas* living in an artificial environment and therefore their instincts and their physical reality are at loggerheads. Annie does provoke Nene but show me a video where she does anything more than poke 'n run. If anything, she was unknowingly keeping Nene's muscles toned. There IS a history between them and gorillas do have long memories, but somehow I doubt Annie is actively recalling her childhood when she does this. If anything it's a game at this point, like when she splashes water on Shabs for his reaction. What everyone really need to worry about is Shabani's heart. About half of captive silverbacks have fibrous myocardiopathy brought on by stress. My wish is the zoo takes them off display and make daily updates via their website. Their health is infinitely more important than our daily dose of GorillaTube. Keep them downstairs where they can push liquids on Nene such as popsicles and oranges - even her eyes are sunken now - and allow Shabani a bit of respite from having to keep the troop herded together. It'll also keep Nene from heights she can fall from.

I think that maybe that last skirmish where NeNe did all the chasing was A LOT of energy spent and probably hurt her arthritis and even maybe she got an injury. Therefore, she had to take it easy to heal. Anyways,I hope thats all it was and not something worse.😢

I'm fairly certain that the fresh veg is supplemented with primate biscuits in their diet. This is typical practice in many zoos to ensure they are getting all their nutrition needs met.

@@LynnAnn1960 In the wild they do get all their nutrition from leaves, bark and plants. They will eat an occasional bug and looove termites; however their digestive system evolved the hind gut to absorb all the nutrition they need in the carb-free Congo which has no grains or sugary roots. 😁 Thinness is part genetics part diet. In the wild if they're not sleeping they're eating, so their guts are always full and, well, gassy. In captivity they eat much less gassy foods and their guts dont have to work as hard to break down the veg we grow, feed them and eat ourselves. 🤭

Ok so I am going to be the one to put a few things out there with these comments. No need in getting hateful or Nasty with anyone who wants to comment on the current situation the way they see it. They are allowed to have their feelings. Just because someone doesn’t agree with their view doesn’t mean they are wrong for feeling this way. We are human and most of us will Show empathy because those who watch the Shabani family have grown to love the family even through just videos and across the country. This is what is wrong with people just be kind. We can’t see through the eyes of any animal because we are human and those are the feelings we are gonna have. I have watched this family for a few years now and I understand how NeNe had treated Annie in the past but I don’t want to see her sick. Annie is growing up and she will Act out just like a young teenager would. Doesn’t make it right but it is what it is. They are animals and the dynamics are different from humans of course but when you watch them you can see human behaviors that are truly amazing at times. They do have feelings and are intelligent animals. You can disagree with me but truly I don’t care. I do care about animals who cannot speak for themselves. Sometimes they show more compassion than a lot of humans. This family sure does

Also gorillas and humans share 98.6 percent of the same DNA and really do have similar motivations and behaviours as we do. And, are alike in many ways. But that 1.4 is also huge difference and they have important differences in behaviour too. I hope everyone enjoys watching - posts their observations and 'live and let live.'
