Looks scrumptious. . However, there's nothing like Poor Man's Meal, otherwise known as "Trash Plate." My favorite version, handed down to me by my grandpa, combines ground beef, thinly sliced fried potatoes, baked beans, some scallions, with a little cheddar cheese sprinkled on top. The family likes to eat it two or three times a week after a hearty breakfast of homegrown oats and maybe sausage and gravy for lunch - a popular Depression era recipe. The family dog usually gets some scraps from each meal.

Thank you for sharing your Grandpa’s Trash Plate meal sounds delicious. We are from New York so we never had sausage and gravy only sausage and eggs. My father was Italian so he liked sweet sausage and meatballs in the tomato sauce. Thank you so much for watching and have a good day👩🏻

Yesterday, I went shopping in my own pantry for lunch (outta fod, you know). In an hour, I had made tabouleh, a REAL hummus (I forgot I even HAD tahini). I made a cucumber salad, and I heated some frozen pita I had forgotten. Lunch was FREE, basically, and my husband loved it! Thanks for the inspiration!

Thank you for these. My parents are older folk (late 70s) and on a low fixed income. I worry about them because I am far away and unable to cook for them or help. Like many people their age, they've never experienced really struggling to eat even on a low income. Lots of people my age (I'm 44) have never seen inflation like this either. I was very poor during my university years (and after for a while) and learned to really scrape a penny, but now that I have kids, I find it a challenge to find quality food for them at the prices in the store. Eggs, dairy, meat and vegetables are becoming out of reach. 😥 Things we thought were basics, like apples, are becoming luxuries for us. It's scary.

My parents lived through the Great Depression and I was told what it was like. Growing up my Mother made us many of the meals from the Great Depression plus she had a recipe collection. I am very thankful that I can prepare many of the meals and it helps with the cost of my grocery bill. At this time I know it is a challenge to feed a family. Thank you so much for watching❤️Grandma👩🏻

Grandma, it looks (by the price) that you've run out of St. Patrick's Day cabbage. I bought three heads at the time when it was cheap, and still have one. I like stretching my budget by getting family size meat packages (such as relatively inexpensive chicken leg quarters) and using them up over the course of a week or so. I'll also buy meat near its sell-by date that is marked for quick sale. Made a big score this way last week in Lidl, $1.50 for a (surprise!) doubled up pack of 24 breakfast sausage patties. (They must have been very overstocked.) Had some for dinner that day, along with the cabbage. Froze rest until ready to use. Looking forward to more Depression-era foods from you! Oh, and of course my condolences to all on the loss of Ditto.😿💔
@GrandmaFeral2 жыл бұрын
We are heartbroken over the passing of Ditto. I don’t remember what store we bought the cabbage, just the price, as we are shopping now at so many different stores. Grandpa and I are eating a lot of meatless meals. We only will have a steak once a year to celebrate a special occasion. Thank you so much for watching and have a good day. Enjoy the sunshine❤️👩🏻&👨🍳
@patriciamorgan65452 жыл бұрын
@@GrandmaFeral I'm shopping mostly Lidl these days, though I don't always like what they have. I only get items that are well-priced, and make do with those. (It's small, open late until 10pm, and has a short, flat entry from handicapped parking, and that's more important to me these days than being able to find everything I need in the packaging/quantity I prefer.) I am looking forward to the new ShopRite opening, whenever that will be. (Looks like it's coming along.) It will be more walking for sure, though. Yes, enjoy the sun! It's rather shockingly bright today after all that dreary rain.
