I love this video!! I remember my grandmother telling us about the Great Depression. She said men would go to a Cafe and order a bowl of hot water and add ketchup to it to make a kind of tomato soup. I am going to have my mom watch this also!

that is awful! :(

My Mother would tell me how awful the Great Depression was. My Aunt would tell me the story about how hungry she was during that time. One day she was walking down the street and saw a piece of molded bread and picked it up and ate it. I will never forget that story. She and my Mom would often say that they hoped no one would ever have to live through another Great Depression. Thank you so much for watching👩🏻

The Ketchup Soup is a classic. They would use the lil packets of crackers from the table and crush them into the 'soup' to bulk it up. The ketchup and crackers are already on the table and I don't think they charged for hot water so its a free meal.

Love butter beans. Mom and dad would make many of these dishes for us but we didn't drink coffee. I still make radish sandwiches but I am the only one who likes them. Every time I see your posts it brings me back to my childhood.

Thank you so much you two! People ate so simply then because they had to, but it would benefit us all to eat this way. 💖🌹
@GrandmaFeral2 жыл бұрын
People ate so simple not only because of the Great Depression but because they did not have the large supermarkets. They only had a corner little grocery store that sold your basic items and no fast food restaurants either. If you think about all the food we have today it is unbelievable that people in this country go hungry. Thank you so much for watching and have a great day👩🏻

Now that was an eye opener a days menu for two. I’m sure it helped out when some family’s had 5 children. As for me, breakfast I had two poached eggs on toast with coffee, approx. $1.80. Lunch- Maple Farms half a duck $ 9.80 with creamed Spanish. Snack watermelon $ 1.10. Dinner mixed salad with blue cheese dressing,turkey sandwich,mayo, lettuce, 12 oz Pepsi, 6 green olives. Snack bag of microwave popcorn. $ 6.20. Approx. total for the day $ 18.90. Times have changed. Thank you for the video. Be well, be safe, peace.

Hi George Thank you for sharing what you eat in a day and the cost. Grandpa would like the poached eggs on toast but me not so much as I like my eggs well done. I have never had duck but most people say it is delicious. We like a mixed salad and try to have one everyday. The only thing we don’t drink anymore is soda. We mainly have coffee, tea, water and sometimes I like seltzer. Happy 4th of July! ❤️👩🏻 &👨🍳
@georgekelly97972 жыл бұрын
@@GrandmaFeral I don’t eat like that every day. I do like eggs in the morning or shredded wheat. Most lunches I have mixed salad or Turkey sandwich. Dinner I corn on the cob and fish. I have diet soda, coffee or tea. I treat myself to seltzer and fox’s you bet chocolate and a splash of milk to make an egg cream. I will be trying your recipes. I have a great and easy recipe for mock chop chicken liver I try to make on the weekend. Well I hope you and grandpa have a wonderful 4 th as well. Be well, be safe, peace.

These recipes can be a life saver during these inflationary times when the cost of food is so exorbitant. I love radishes but never thought of using them for a sandwich. Thank you for the great ideas since my grocery bill each month for two is around $800.00 or more. Keep the depression recipes coming. This is the best video I watched today! God bless you both.

This is the reason I am making these videos to show everyone how they can make meals with so few ingredients. Grandpa and I always shop for sale items. We are fortunate because we live close to so many supermarkets and they are building more which should be opening soon. I am hoping they have grand opening sales. Thank you so much for watching and for God’s blessings. Have a great weekend❤️👩🏻

Great video as always. I actually just bought beetroot yesterday so ill make the salad. I think the beetroot will go great in the dandelion salad too. Great tip about not picking it in certain areas, they grow alongside highways but you can't eat them. Do you have Patreon? It will certainly help you during these times and its more money for more food/vids. I hope you and Grandpa have a great 4th of July. Much Love from Australia.

I’m impressed you did this! How filling did you find these meals? Did you calculate anything like the calories, protein, fibre, vitamins, or minerals in them?
@GrandmaFeral2 жыл бұрын
We found the meals to be very filling. Grandpa and I are not fans of modern oversized portions or processed foods. We did not calculate anything because during The Great Depression nobody calculated anything. People were taught to eat a varied diet so they could get all of their vitamins and minerals that way. People were very happy with whatever they had to eat. Nobody concerned themselves with calories, protein or fiber.

Hi my beet salad is very easy to make. Slice your beets add some cut up onion and mix together. Pour apple cider vinegar on top. Mix again. Refrigerate.
