Fried Liver variation analysis starts at 29:26 , but then the discussion goes off on some very unlikely, risky variations (interesting, but probably rarely played). Then, however, at 44:08 , analysis begins covering the "main line" of Fried Liver variation, which starts with Ng5 by White, ... then d5 by Black, resulting in a position very familiar to many chess players. However, discussion goes off on some more unlikely and risky variations again. Then, at 1:01:23, analysis finally begins with: Main line 'Fried Liver' attack by White, and with best play (the most sound) by Black. Those are my time stamp notes, for those interested :) And now, on a completely different subject, Pia has a very calming and nice voice. She also has many wise and practical things to say about chess. Thanks to your post, we get some of the benefits of her accumulated wisdom about the game. Nice teamwork :) Thanks for posting!

I had trouble following the fast paced explanations of GM Pia. Her creative mind goes everywhere at once.

This really brings me way back. All the children were playing Italian games back in the day, and teachers always said to develop your pieces and castle and not make pawn moves. If children actually listened they would get a pinned f3 or f6 knight with a castled king possibly followed by Nd4 or Nd5, depending on who made the pin. This was so common I'd often set a trap. I'd not develop my f3/f6 knight and pin the enemy f3/f6 knight. When Bg4 or Bg5 attacking my queen came, I'd lop off the enemy f3/f6 knight with the bishop, removing the defender and counter attacking the queen. We also had many issues with the classical two knights. Some 25 years ago not many kids in my town knew the line. But playing in a tournament in Lelystad the kids all played it with white and I lost most of those games or it was very bad! Later I studied these lines very carefully and a strong player also made an article on it in our club magazine, talking about the Nb4 and a3 lines, saying it was very messy! Anyway, I always had a very hard time with black, even in the main line. It's still beyond me why you would tell people to play a line a pawn down and with a ragged structure and a Na5 knight and to play for ''dynamic compensation,'' let alone little children.

@ Air Yay Day Way, yes, it is reasonable to ask why anyone would sacrifice a pawn and accept a bad pawn structure in response to 4.Ng5 against the Two Knights Defense in response to the Italian Game even for good piece play. This line was never very practical except for strong players. During the 1960s and for a long time afterwards it was fashionable at the top level for Black to invite the following line: 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nf6 4.Ng5 d5 5.exd5 Na5 6.Bb5+ c6 7.dxc6 bxc6 8.Be2 h6 9.Nf3 e4 10.Ne5 Bd6 11.f4 exf3ep 12.Nxf3 O-O. In the position after 12...O-O Black was said to have full compensation for his or her sacrificed pawn. And many titled players were still teaching their students to play this way for Black even in 2015. Part of the mentality of this kind of teaching was that "results don't matter" until you are 2200+ and only "experience matters." After all no teacher ever bragged "I made him (her) into an 1800 player." But interestingly at the end of this video Pia Cramling explains that 8.Bd3 is now considered better than 8.Be2. Maybe that explains why this entire line is less fashionable now (it seems to me) for Black in high level chess than it was during the 1960s, 1980s, or even in 2015. I don't really know because I don't play this line for Black. But that is what Pia Cramling seems to be saying here. And even in the 1960s Black had to be prepared for other lines besides 8.Be2 such as e.g. 8.Qf3.

While other chess KZbin's would prepare and study every line they are going to show, or have an engine running in the background, Pia is has nothing to prove and has no problem to admit that she straight up can't always tell which move is the best one in every position. And I prefer this because as a beginner or intermediate, if you are not sure you can memorize the line you probably should avoid it when even a GM think its complicated.
