Grandpa's New 5 Gallon Bucket Garden! Container Gardening

Grandpa decided it was time to redesign our backyard garden. After many years of having raised garden beds, he wanted to try out a 5 gallon bucket garden. It is supposed to be easier to maintain, have less weeds, and keep animals out of the plants. We'll see how it goes.

Hi Grandma and Grandpa! Sorry I’ve been away. This is a lot of work Grandpa, but what a great new garden! So far, we have gotten some radishes, cucumbers, and yellow squash out of our vegetable garden. We also have growing Early Girl tomatoes, Parks Whoppers tomatoes, and some cherry tomatoes (I forgot the variety), pumpkins (both orange and black ones- won’t be big until the fall), peas, green beans, and of course, zucchini! Last season I was too ill to bake zucchini bread, but I’m a lot better, and we have a lot of IOU’s out there for zucchini bread! I know that Grandma makes that, and other great muffins, quickbreads, etc. I think your ideas for this garden are great, Grandpa! I bet you will have virtually no trouble with wild “critters” and with many bugs who won’t like the buckets! The brick work you have laid down is beautiful!!!! Compared to our prices in Northern California at the different home improvement stores, you got a great price! Looking forward to seeing how thing go!

Hi Polly Alice we are so happy to hear from you again. Grandpa worked many days to get the garden completed. Your vegetable garden sounds wonderful with a large variety of plants. We will definitely be showing everyone how are vegetables are growing since this is the first time we are using buckets. Grandpa did not want to be bending down anymore pulling out weeds. That's not only practical, but very pretty, with the nice area for pots at the end. Looking forward to watching it grow. Would you tuck in some herbs at the bottom of the taller plants, or do you have a herb garden elsewhere?

Oh I felt that when you said you had to take up some bricks and do it again. That's some hard work but it looks nice! I would love to see more videos on how the buckets work. Also, cooking videos on what you make from the produce? Thanks, Grandpa! ❤

Yes I had to take up some bricks and level the ground and put the bricks back. I definitely will be making videos and showing how my plants are growing at different stages in the buckets. Of course more recipes also. ❤️Grandpa🧑🏻‍🌾

Good looking setup but I wondering if you had any drain holes in the bottom of the buckets to keep your plants from drowning if it rains too much like it has the last year?

Yes each bucket has five drain holes and we have had heavy rains with no problems. I definitely will keep everyone updated how everything is growing.❤️Grandpa🧑🏻‍🌾

@@nancyestrada9058 He's right, Nancy. Bug sprays kill _all_ the bugs, not just the ones you don't like. That's why honey bees, butterflies, and other useful insects are endangered. Birds, bats, and other small creatures depend on insects to survive.

A suggestion would be to invite birds in to your garden to control any pests. Encourage the presence of birds!

Looks great Grandpa. Did you make drain holes in the bottom of the buckets? Wish you would have showed more of the soil and fertilizer if used, and where did you get your plants, or did you start from seed? God bless youz both!❤

Thank you! Yes I did put 5 drain holes in the bottom of each bucket. Each bucket contains 3/4 of top soil 1/4 of raised bed miracle grow soil. For the first time I purchased my plants at Stew Leonard’s. ❤️Grandpa🧑🏻‍🌾
