Momentum in sports is just word used to describe a combination of different things, it's not some tangible force like the momentum that a swinging pendulum has. Words can have multiple meanings. Things like 'home field advantage' with an entire crowd cheering for you, coming back from multiple goals/runs to just needing 1 more to tie the game when there's not much time left, or being down 3-0 in a playoff series and winning 3 games to force a game 7. These things giving you a rush of adrenaline and confidence boost is exactly what momentum in sports is. It probably has less impact at the professional level because those athletes are so highly skilled/trained and can keep their emotions in check, but when you're 15 years old with a chance to complete some big comeback I can imagine the adrenaline rush could be huge.

He definitely understands what it is but just doesn't believe in it. I hard disagree with him though, any historian can tell you how monumentally important morale is in war and morale is essentially the same thing as momentum in sports. If you believe you can win, if you believe you can make a comeback, if you believe you can survive the battle... then you're going to be much more motivated to make that happen.
