Thank you so much for saving the insurance company over $20,000 on this guy‘s roof. I bet you they really appreciate it. You might’ve done that really nicely but most contractors don’t have that much experience actually Roofing, and if they tried it, they would just damage more shingles, ultimately leading to a bigger problem that isn’t covered by insurance. Note to all homeowners out there, if you notice you have missing tabs call your insurance company not a contractor.

Thanks for the video, and good work. I'm a repair tech in NE Florida. I started Roofing here in 93, and by 99 I was done working on crews and moved to repairs exclusively. The problem with most companies is that they do not keep a dedicated repair tech on payroll; instead, they pull people off the crew to go do repairs when they get them, but their primary goal is to sell whole roof replacements.

A lot of jackasses. I honestly love telling people they’ll get another couple years and it can be repaired. Not just to be honest to the owner, but I absolutely hate waste. I always tell them, to look at yearly cost you take your roofs replacement cost divided by average amount of years it’ll last. If you get two more years instead of changing it today, you’ve just achieved better value. Increasing the value you get from something You’ve paid for while simultaneously reducing waste, and all the while I still made some $ for the repair ?!?!? Sounds like a fucking win/win/win to me.
@justinstevenson20612 ай бұрын
As long as the repair isn’t more costly than the anticipated life you have left in the roof, or you need time to budget for said roof, repair away.
@cryengine_x2 ай бұрын
exactly! I noticed this. I got a brand new roof like 3-5 years ago. Primo roof supposedly, shingles rated to 110 mph winds IIRC etc, top of the line. I got a few hail hit shingles, and when I had the guys who put my roof on look at it, he took some pics of about 3 shingles that had been hit (just had marks, I guess they were ok). He said, we cant take this to insurance for a new roof its not enough. I was like wait a minute the whole roof is new, isnt there anything we can do short of a whole new roof such as repair just those small spots? The way he hemmed and hawwed set off my BS detector. He was like yeah, but then we could miss some spots and they leak later, or something. His response made no real sense. And later I realized, I bet its all a scam and everybody in the chain only wants to do whole roofs for more money! Bingo! This is relevant because I've been considering self insuring. And I think the option to do spot repairs on the roof (again, only because it's new otherwise) if necessary is important.

Last year I replaced 23 of those. I put that roof on 34 years ago. Never did a roof before or after. Got the shingles for $350 from Handy Andy in 1990. They were being discontinued (however that was possible for a simple black 3 tab). Took me 3 days with hammer and nails in shitty weather. Anyway, I'm 61 years old now. Contemplated a tear off replacement, but noticed some rot, so I pulled the trigger and hired the pros. 13k later, I have a new roof.

Good video! I would add one thing about this type of repair that might be done by someone inexperienced. The tendency might be to seal all along the bottom of shingles. That would be very bad because any water that might flow or blow in should be able to get out at the bottom of each shingle. A dab or two of sealant to hold the shingle down in wind is good though.

Note: if the roof is hot the shingle will tear like paper so be extra careful, if the roof is cold the shingle will snap in half so be extra careful. I wouldve cut the showing damaged shingle flush to the tile above it then put the new shingle up there as far as i could and put in 2 nails just to hold that one shingle down mostly because the older the roof is the thinner the shingles are and will tear and now you have a bigger job

Nice to see a 'roofer' actually using a hatchet like real roofers do! 3 in 1's are just fine when they're still in good condition. I started decades ago installing these & it's sad that the skill of this is slowly dying away with all the new home depot roofer buying cheap architectural shingles, a nail gun, a clew hammer and cheap plastic nylon husky tool pouch calling themselves *'ROOFERS'*! They don't even know why the hatchet is the better tool to use, especially on 3tabs lifting up the tab for 5th nail(when soldiering courses). It frustrates me how all the kids think they're professional roofers just buying a nailguns at HomeDepot. How do you like that magnetic and hatchet? You seem to use it well with the nails sticking on it. Thanks for all you do man!👍🏻👌🏻🛠️🔧 ✊🏻🇺🇲🦅🇺🇲✊🏻

As a roofer of almost 40 years I would never recommend this. Even though you're trying to line up with the next rain slot your cup will never be as accurate as a factories. Spend the time people to remove the whole tab and replace it with a brand new tab that way your butt joints are factory to factory cuz your cut will never ever be accurate especially cutting underneath another shingle where you can clearly not see or have a straight edge to use. Also I never use a flat bar to remove the bondage between the tabs that are here to the ones on top of them with a flat bar. Whenever I break my three tab shingles loose I always use a masonry's large trowel it's thinner and wider does less damage and as quicker and cleaner. Make sure you put the nails back appropriately and use the correct amount and the correct location when applying tar or bull as we call it.

The first thing this guy did was wrong its always harder to cut a shingle when its reverse side is facing up
@chadthurston29232 ай бұрын
There’s faster easier ways to patch that without using new shingles also it’s called caulking and reusing the loose pieces
@chadthurston29232 ай бұрын
The reason I don’t replace the tab and try to reuse the broken off pieces is because not all shingled roofs where one tab breaks can be repaired simply by unsealing the ones around it due to brittleness. Usually it’s the seams that cause tabs to loosen because spaces in the tab sealant or seams underneath letting air and dirt from nearby construction or fields slowly degrade the tar line. The wind acts like a sand blaster and the sun cooks the tar or sealant away. The best way to fix tabs is to replace the entire shingle or just reseal loose pieces with caulking especially in high wind areas and on older worn out three tabs.
