When you compare graphic designers to Illustrators it is not often that the illustrator gets the brunt of the confusing it is the graphic designer. Often when people hear the word "graphic" the immediately think of graphics, that is to say comics, digital arts works, and even digital illustrations. But this is not the case, and this is why it is important to have the discussion of Graphic designers vs illustrator.
How to compare the two? The simplest way I have come up with explaining the difference between a Graphic Designer and an Illustrator would be as follows.
A graphic designer assembles and organizes text, images, illustrations, and elements into an orderly or disorderly fashion to create design that communicates, tells a story, or solves a problem.
Whereas an Illustrator create digital or hand created art work that communicates an emotion, asks a question, or gives an answer.
So, you have design vs art. The designer may use the illustrators piece in a design work, but it is not the standard practice for a design to create an illustration. That is not their specialty.

This video TOUCHES on the differences between the two but I think it digressed a bit and I think the stark contrast between the two can be made clear with a more boiled down distinction. Illustrators tend to create the most foundational centrepieces of visual creation from scratch, from imagination and from mastering the most fundamental building blocks of the visual universe such as studying all muscles of the human arm and a canine foreleg, the way lighting behaves on human flesh and canine fur, THEN producing a hybrid version from that wealth of knowledge......that can THEN be used for multiple second-stage applications...such as graphic design, where the graphic designer frames the new Werewolf arm in a perfect composition of borders, measurements, labels, fonts and color corrections for print for a magazine advertisement. There, that a nutshell .

I like the video but I think it really gave an over simplification of raster vs vector art. Yes vector art is scalable and clean but there are many scenarios where raster art would and should be used. Vector art is fantastic for logos and clean graphic designs. Raster art on the other hand is good for digital painting and illustrations that require texture or specific brushes. As long as you are mindful of the necessary file size for your project, have a dpi of 300 or more, and save your file in the right format you should have no problems with having your files become too pixelated.

actually illustrators uses photoshop mainly......it is easy to work with brushed and textures. adobe illustrator is used when client asks for a vector art.

This really helped me, this one video helped me to understand between juggling the two careers as a Graphic Designer or an Illustrator. After this video, I know where I wanted to continue my career and it's being an Illustrator. The moment I heard that you mentioned that an Illustrator is the one who has love for drawing Marvel Characters, love concepts like per say, posters, movie and game posters. As a graphic designer ego study in the cuaad i learn to work first with pencils paper ink before computer and learn also many ilustration techniques, prismacolor, airbrush, pastel chalc, watercolor, markers, human figure composition estetic, basic video making, psicology of color, marketing, learned that a graphic designer not necessary have to draw or create its own art but if he can he dont have limits and can be anything.

Don't illustrators already delve into layout, composition, and image organization through first draft sketches before moving on to the illustration itself? I get that graphic designers deal with how these elements fit within certain contexts such as magazines, webpages, and the like, but the job existed well before personal computers, so I can't really boil that down to how all the above is achieved through computer only. I'm just trying to understand the meat and potatoes of graphic design itself before applying it to computers and beyond. I feel like stating computers as the end-all-be-all, I'm missing out on something else about it.

Hello I like editing pictures not just changing the effects but like putting texts, overlay, double exposure and so on. Is it graphic design? Also in like movie poster or drama poster, is it graphic design? And also in like music videos that we usually watch, is motion graphic design inclined with it? Photo editing and effects would be considered a piece a graphic design. Posters are definitely graphic design. Motion design uses graphic design concepts but requires a far more in-depth study and skill building. Elements of design are definitely in both practices. I have a friend who is a motion designer and recently took a follow up graphic design course to better understand his role as a Motion designers. They are definitely intertwined.
