The nature shows i watched as a kid had me believing that predators always killed their prey first and then ate it. It wasn't until KZbin that I saw that many predators (big cats, wild dogs, hyenas etc.) start feeding on their prey while it's still alive!
@saltedllama2759 Жыл бұрын
A lot of times a big cat doesn't "choke" their prey to kill it. It isn't always asphyxiation; most times they pinch the carotids and cut the blood supply to the brain causing the animal to pass out. It usually isn't dead before it's eaten. Especially with something like a cheetah which fears losing its kill to a much larger leopard, hyena, or lion - they have to eat it quickly.

Solitary cats like Cheetah, Leapord, Mountain Lion and small cats kill their prey first before eating them because they don’t have anybody to compete with while eating. Lions however, does, the one that is doing all the killing cant eat while the prey’s throat is in her mouth, so best she got to do is to just neutralize it to a point where it can’t escape anymore, and then she’ll just begin eating them regardless if they’re alive or not. If she’s too late to eat her prey then the rest of the pride would eat the entire thing. Also notice how all of the cubs are skinny? Because they can’t compete for meat with the adults, so the stronger cub that CAN compete however necessary, lives while those can’t would perish. Tough reality of surviving in the plains, lions had to stay together in a group to survive too so it’s not like there’s a choice. I honestly think lions evolved the way that they are during the time period where there were bigger and stronger predators that were killing them, so they evolved to be bigger and bulkier than their cousin cat species but that comes at a trade off of them being slow, so they try negating it by staying in a pack and hunting together. While other cats like Cheetah developed speed to outrun the danger, and Leapord evolved great climbing capability to get away from said danger, which is why both of them didnt need to stay in a pack, except for Cheetahs because there has been plenty of documented instances of them staying in a pack together usually siblings.

I remember years ago there was a TV show called “Wild Kingdom” which focused on animals in the wild, mostly in Africa. In the “wild kingdom” there is no mercy, compassion, guilt, or malice. It all comes down to “survival of the fittest”, and “eat or be eaten”…again, with no mercy, compassion, guilt, or malice!

@@mikeb5372Is there “malice”? Really? Sadly, malice is a trait displayed by humans. Predators in the wild instinctively hunt, kill, and devour their prey in order to survive. Nothing more, and nothing less!

Lions are carnivorous. They kill to eat. Lions feasted on the buffalo while being photographed. One kept her eye on me while the pride devoured the carcass. I kept filming. The pride attracted cubs scrambling to eat. This process is continuous. Once the warthog was taken down, the pride converged. Scraps were consumed by hyenas lurking nearby.

The whole thing didn't last more than 3 minutes anyway, we'd like to assume that the squealing is just a subconscious response and that the brain no longer register pain signals, but nobody knows for sure except the hog.

This video takes the prize. I’ve watched a number of these, Lions eat a prey alive videos, but dear god! This is the most gory, most shocking one I’ve yet seen, by far. The Warthog looks like it was turned inside out in some Star Trek transporter accident, but STILL is alive!
@terrylyons3577 Жыл бұрын
It's pretty clear those Cubs looked very thin. These lions have not had much to eat the last couple weeks, maybe longer. You could tell they were hungry by how aggressively they ate that warthog! The Cubs were just as aggressive and looked starved. If the lioness is do not eat regularly, their milk dries up, so the Cubs likely have had very little to eat in the last couple weeks.
