I introduce the 4 conic sections, explain the basic structure of Ellipses & Circles, and finish by working through three graphing examples after putting these equations in standard form.

Once again, being the best at what you do! Thanks, Mr. Tarrou! Curiously, I found that working with ellipses was not as difficult as I originally thought. I could do all my exercises and even found an equation for the orbit of the Earth around the Sun. Nothing beats that nerdy feeling!

I don't think I have done a video with that example...but you plug each of your thee points into the general form to set up three equations. Then you can use matrices with either the Gaussian Elimination Method or Determinants to solve for D E and F. I have videos for solving three variable systems. There are other methods of solving but I don't have videos for those. I hope this helps.

Going through your conic sections, they are very helpful. The first time we were introduced to them, we were literally handed worksheets and told to study them and do example problems on our own. It was terribly confusing. But this clears it up. :) Fun story, a kid in my class would pronounce "foci" as "fo-chi" and while it annoyed the heck out of me, it would make me laugh all the time. Thanks again!

Mr. Tarrou, your video lessons are a life saver. I have spent an excess of 120 hours doing homework and trying to learn trigonometry on my own at my local community college. I don't like to point fingers, but my teacher is straight garbage. My question is in regards to determining values for an ellipse. MyMathLab has told me that when an ellipse is in standard form, and the center is NOT the origin, finding the vertices is different then when the center is the origin. I have in my notes that when a squared is under the squared y term (vertical), and the center is not the origin, the vertices are (h, k+a) and (h, k-a ) and then when the center IS at the origin, and the a squared term is under the squared y value (vertical), the vertices are (0, a), and (0, -a). Can you please help me understand if this is wrong or right? Thank you so much for all that you do. Jason
@arkonfiftyone

Now that I am watching your video on hyperbolas I see that you mentioned my specific question. I heard you say that and it was like you directed that towards someone like me. Well, it is honestly easier for me to just memorize a formula like (h, k+a) instead of counting the points on the graph every time. I always write out a formula sheet when I take my exams as a reference page. I think I honestly just confused myself, or the fact that MyMathLab doesn't stick to one form of the formula (meaning it gave me two different ones for the same thing) confused me. Also, the fact that that one equation for a parabola opening up/down is X(squared)=4py is confusing in itself. This just seems counter intuitive unless you draw it, which I haven't been doing much of until yesterday. Because when I think of something vertical, I think of the Y coordinate, which you pointed out very specifically in your video on hyperbolas :P. Also like you said there is a lot to memorize with conic sections, and I the best piece of information I have taken away to help me understand these differences on a coordinate plane, is to draw the picture. Thank you again. Jason

Thanks again!
@profrobbob
@profrobbob 11 жыл бұрын
Clint_Beastwood Not at all!!! The formulas that MathLab are technically the same, but when the center is the origin you don't have to write the h and k in (h, k+a) and (h, k-a ). I used to write a formula sheet before starting my tests too, that is a good test taking technique. I encourage my students to write out the formulas they need as they start their tests too. I hope you end up with an A in your math class and I am very happy I can help. Thank you for watching and your support.

ProfRobBob Thank you Mr. Tarrou. My final is this afternoon at 2pm. There is SO MUCH I need to remember for this exam. Here is the deal with how this class is structured at my school, the tests are worth 85% of your grade, and there are only 3 of them, and then the final. HOW WHACK IS THAT?!?! (In all seriousness it may not be that far from reality but the kicker in my situation is that my teacher doesn't teach us anything). So essentially, this teacher is having students repeat the course multiple times. I had a 90% average before the first test. After the first test, which I made a 68 on, my grade dropped to a 68%. I have been pulling it back up ever since. I made a few sign errors and put a few values in the wrong places and boom. As of this morning, I have 144 hours logged on my math lab for this class alone, and that is not including class time, time in the tutoring center, and other time spent when I have been logged out of math lab. My average as of this morning is a 78.5%. Since the final replaces our lowest test score, and it is a new test score on its own, I am hoping I can really improve my grade today. Your videos have been such an amazing resource to utilize I have recommended you to over 5 people in my class. Thanks again!

Clint_Beastwood I hope by the time you are reading this that you have passed that final like BAM!!! Excuse my curiosity sir.But in the 15+ min of the video, the standard form of your equation is ...(y+3)2... but the standard form of an ellipse is (y-k)... Is it still considered even though the standard form of an ellipse is negative and your equation is positive?
@profrobbob
@profrobbob 8 жыл бұрын
That just means that the y coordinate of your center is going to be negative.... (y-(-3))^2 Thanks for watching.

What video do you have for finding the standard equation of a three-point circle? It involves this type of equation: x2 + y2 + dx + ey + f = 0

@ProfRobBob Hey, professor! Could you make video series about VECTORS in mathematics. I received a poor grade from high school in this subject and would like to brush up on stuff. I never did very much physics in high school sadly either, so I never got the knowledge from over that subject either.

I don't do a tremendous amount of work with vectors in the high school classes I teach. This page has the vector lessons I have done so far:) www.profrobbob.com/pre-calculus/vectors I am currently working on building my Alg 1 playlist while I'm teaching 4 different math subjects at my local high school. I wish I had taken Physics in high school or college too like you.

CONGRATULATIONS Brenda and thanks for taking the time to "thank the teacher" and share your success story! Sounds like a perfect time to share your success story and my channel with the head of the math department at your school so they can share it with ALL the teachers...then they can share it with ALL their students...they get free math help and our channel keeps growing as long as everyone continue to like, subscribe, support the ads and keep sharing all the free educational channels that help you...BAM!!! Merry Christmas to you too Brenda and let us know how that trig class enjoys my channel after you share it:) PS...you might find it easier to search things on my webpage at www.profrobbob.com
