The vertex form or standard form...whatever your book calls it is f(x)=a(x-h)^2+k. The minus is already there in front of the h, so you have to change the sign you see as you write h...the x of the vertex. If you have studied transformations of functions the horizontal shift is the opposite of what you would expect:) That x-2 inside the square function (exponent of 2) indicates a horizontal shift of 2 to the right.
@profrobbob11 жыл бұрын
A zero is an x-intercept, so you let y=0 and set your equation equal to zero if it is not already. Then solve the quadratic equation by factoring or the quadratic formula. You can also complete the square.

That is a bit of a hard question to answer without knowing what your book considers standard for, or vertex form. Your parabola is opening up, with the x of the vertex = 4. With the latus rectum= 2 the vertex is 1/2 units above the directix. I hope this is a good enough hint to allow you to finish the problem.

I should have said the parabola can open up or down...this is because your directix is horizontal. The axis passes through the vertex so the x of vertex is 4. The latus rectum length is 4P and it's length is 2, so 4P=2 then P= 1/2. The vertex is 1/2 units away from the directix of Y=-3, so the Y coordinate is either -3+1/2 or -3-1/2.
@profrobbob11 жыл бұрын

Notice in the standard form I wrote in white chalk (x-h)….the negative is already in the standard from. Because of the negative in the standard form, it appears you change the sign of the value of h as you pull it out of the equation. If h was negative, like if h = -2 then the equation would be (x- -2) or simplified to (x+2)

You wouldn't be watching a video and using an electronic device if it was not because of math and all we can do with its applications. As usual, excellent video. I just have a question/comment about what you call the standard form of a parabola. My textbooks and all I've seen call it the vertex form of a parabola. The form ax^2 + bx + c is what they call the standard form, standard quadratic form, or sometimes even what you call it in this lesson, the general form of a parabola. This is great. Keep it up.
