Brian, I wanted to let you know that I’ve been following you since last year and practicing what you said. Organic fertilizers, manually aerating and liquid aeration, proper Ph and so forth. This year we have the nicest lawn in the over 30 years we’ve lived here. We overseeded in the fall and the lawn is the thickest and greenest it’s ever been. We also have three dogs and you know how difficult keeping a lawn can be. I can’t believe the difference in only one year. It is nothing short of amazing. I know this might sound like a fake review, but it is the truth. Thank you very much for your expertise and practical lawn care advice.

I have learned a great deal from him as well. This man is a wealth of lawn knowledge. He has made me rethink many of my lawn decisions and not repeat many mistakes.

Much appreciated comments Thurston! Keep making mistakes, that usually means you are trying new things and leaning in the moment.

@@TurfMechanic Hey Brian, These are the active ingredients in the Protene Fert. Thought I would get your opinion. I’m still learning with your help about choosing the correct fertilizers and the pros /cons of urea. My soil ph is 7 Total Nitrogen (N) 20.0% 7.0% Ammoniacal Nitrogen 2.5% Urea Nitrogen 4.0% Other Water Soluble Nitrogen* 6.5% Water Insoluble Nitrogen* Soluble Potash (K2O) 5.0% Sulfur (S) - 10.0% Combined Sulfur (S) Iron (Fe) 4.0% - 1.6% Water Soluble Iron (Fe)

Do you do anything specific to mitigate the dog damage? That's what I'm struggling with the most.

Great info as always Brian! Was sitting on my patio enjoying my freshly mowed lawn while watching your video and had to pause it for a sec to get up & see if my neighbours installed new wind chimes… lol Love that sound in the background!

Great thoughts on the temperature when mulching. Previously, I regularly mulched and endured the browness of the lawn clippings, but now bag consistently and use the clippings as vegetable garden cover to deter weeds and retain moisture... works really well. Grass seeds don't tend to re-sprout in the garden if you continually add clippings on top of each layer a la lasagna.

This is awesome, we do that too in our garden. Around this time every year we have starts getting ready for the garden so I always save a bunch of fresh clippings for use as garden mulch around the young plants in our garden beds. It works so well that I'm shocked more people don't do it. Did you see my video on this topic? It's here if you have a few minutes of spare time: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fHnWpqxjecSFY8k

Thanks for the compliment and for the video idea. It's one I probably should have made long ago 😉

Can you buildup [bare] sandy soil by heavy clipping mulching? We are getting good amounts of rain in south FL this time of year. Also, could I be seeding those bare patches under the clippings and keep on a consistent watering schedule? Thanks. Also on a 30-35 degree slope 😂

Hi Brian, I'm back. Living in the Chicago area, I have been battling Thistle Plants in my front and back grass for years. I dig them out by the root and they still come back all around yard. What is the best way to eliminate them without killing the grass? I've tried commercial weed killers and it kills that plant, but it continues to come up in other areas of my yard. Thank You in Advance.

I started bagging this year because I have Poa Annua in spots of my front yard and everywhere in the back. Definitely can't be letting thousands of seeds stick around. I dunno about your area, but for us it's illegal to dump grass clippings in the garbage with a fine attached. Organic waste in landfills is a major methane contributor and a waste. We all have yard waste service available for a fairly reasonable price in my city, $13 a month for a 96 gallon bin and up to 250lbs.

I try to bag everything I cut from my hill yard for the same seedhead reasoning. Last year I let the weeds get out of control on the hill while I built out our garden in mid to late Spring. This year I'm removing as many of them as possible. The clean stuff from the main yard went into compost but the weed clippings also get picked up curbside so long as I bag them in special lawn/garden waste bags. Not sure if we have fines for putting into trash, I should look into that, but the city and county here make it real easy to responsibly dispose of clippings and yard waste if we don't put it to use somewhere else in our yards. We are still getting very cold temps and snow but soon clippings will start getting mulched back into the lawn again. Looking forward to that. :)

Bulldog MFG. makes a bagging blade for the Toro recycler. Much better for high, wet grass.

Nice! I'll look it up and if it makes sense I'll put in an order. My Toro already bags about as good as any mower I've tried so picking up a backup bagging blade may be awesome for leaf season.

I'm not mulching until my poa annua is dead. I can't risk to spread the sead heads. If not I like the cut quality of a bagged lawn.

It certainly is easier to mulch them so long as the lawn isn't overgrown 😃

I bag my clippings in the back yard. There are a lot of dandelions and other weeds right now. I dont want the seeds to get on my lawn again.

Good plan! My hill yard spread a lot of dandelion seed last may and June when I slacked off up there. I'm paying the price this spring in the main yard.
