no one has ever mentioned how much grass to feed to rabbits. thank you.
@vincentfamilyhomestead94692 жыл бұрын
I am not sure of the weight, but we give each the equivalent of two handfuls of grass. I think at one point in the video you can see how much we give them each. I would suggest that you start by giving them a bit more than you think they will eat as well as access to pellet food. Then you can see how much they will actually eat. I hope that helps.

The states reaction to Newcastle Disease has been terrible. They came and killed all my chickens, along with everyone else’s in our town, and pretty much every other town in a 100 mile radius. The state claimed it was spreading and took it a upon themselves to come kill everyone’s birds, yet the left all the commercial farms alone. They literally used helicopters to find out who had chickens. It was one the the most difficult days of my life, to sit there and be forced to allow the state to take part of my livelihood.

On pg 64 of "Backyard Rabbit Farming" by Ann Williams she lists garden crops to feed your rabbits. You might find a copy @ your local library. Another book is "Keeping Poultry & Rabbits on Scraps" by Claude Goodchild & Alan Thompson. It was first published in 1941. Check out what people fed their rabbits during WAs & after. God bless.

Hi, I wanted to ask if you have had the chance to feed rabbits with hooked bristlegrass?
@krzysztofrudnicki58412 жыл бұрын
Very informative. I read about research in which rabbits were fed mulberry leaves and twigs. Long story short: mulberry can be 50% of you rabbit feed without losses in meat production. I won't judge you, but I don't like raising animals in cages. My option is to raise them in small colony setup to let them socialize. But it's my opinion.
@vincentfamilyhomestead9469 Жыл бұрын
That is an option that I would like to explore. The problem with that is predation and then being very careful not to mix male and female (I am thinking rabbit tractors). I do hope to try some more ideas out in the future with both tractors and other concepts.

New subscriber here, i have 5 rabbits but my problem is, when i put grass in their pen, they poo n urinate on it and that means they wont eat it n it become waste which is expensive. How do u feed them to make sure they don't urinate on it?
@vincentfamilyhomestead94692 жыл бұрын
I had the same problem when I placed it in a bowl or container. Because of that we place about a handful per rabbit in the bottom of their wire cage. What doesn't get eaten by them falls through. Another solution would be to make a small wire basket from something like poultry wire. The wire would need to have a big enough space for them to get to the grass through it. You could attach these a little off the floor of their cage so that they couldn't poop in it, but could still eat the grass.
@vincentfamilyhomestead94692 жыл бұрын
I also believe I have seen baskets like this for sale at Tractor Supply. If you didn't want to make them.

If my husband will agree, I’m ready to start raising meat rabbits on our half acre, starting with one buck and two does. So do you just cut one small section daily? I’m thinking about having a rabbit tractor for daytime.
@vincentfamilyhomestead94692 жыл бұрын
Yes. I found that cutting enough for them to eat daily essentially kept the lawn cut all summer. I have a cub cadet riding mower that is setting idle because this system is working.
@StephanieSomer2 жыл бұрын
The word you're looking for instead of diurnal is crepuscular. Many small animals that are considered as prey animals are crepuscular. They are active and feeding during the dawn and evening hours.

We’re in Central California which is very much like a desert in our spot...no grass, only weeds....
@vincentfamilyhomestead94693 жыл бұрын
Depending on what you mean by weeds, they might be able to eat that as well. Not sure what sort of vegitation grows in your area? Here, they will eat briars, various wild plants and the grass; of course. We keep our lawn a bit natural for the purpose of producing feed and allowing them to get a variety of vegetation.
