Warning, long read... Only read it if You are really determined and prepared for it! Tea, biscuits, lunch and lots of motivation may be need to go through :-) Shaun thank You for Your movies. I am finding watching You so educational, motivating and actually there is something about You, that You are filling up the screen with this positive energy and kindness it made me to watch it more and more ;-) I am completely newbie when it comes to the gardens and lawns. For the past 15 years have been on rented property with artificial grass in the back and a bit of unloved grass on the front which mainly due to my heyfewer I used to hate to mow. There wasn't any other lawn caring procedures. I usually let it growing really long, laughing at it because the name of the road was the Meadows so I had a Meadow :-) and to my surprise the grass was growing really well and healthy. Anyway, thinks changed on end of last November (2022), when I have moved to a lovely, new build house with about 200 square meters back garden and some lawn on the front as well. I never thought it would be so challenging. I thought grass is just grass and don't need anything to grow and look green. How wrong I was. And for sure I never thought that it could be so much time and money consuming but at the same time very interesting, fascinating and satisfying. Anyway, moving in to my house There was a turf which have been left to be badly overgrowth and when they aventually mowed it they have left everything on top of it. Never collected anything...I can't understand this really. Anyway by the time we have moved in it was too late to do anything with. Also the whole back garden sloping towards the house and whole lawn by the house is just waterlogged clay where the grass died quicker than in any other part of the garden. With the first little bit of warmer days in mid February I have started to mow it down. Unfortunately I have quickly realised that most of my back lawn (around 200 square meters) are dead. Front was a little bit better but still had a lot of bald patches and much of dead grass. The grass just suffocated under the thick layer of dead matter. So I bought myself a scaryfing machine. Gone through and it did cleared all the dead matter but nothing growing really had been left after that. And I have realised that the soil I have in there, it's needs to have a lot to be improved. Probably best would be to dig it out and replace everything with quality stuff. But it's expensive and very time consuming so I have watched YT and gets across your movie about improving a new build lawn with organic matter. This really gets me thinking and pushed to do something about. I thought I'll give it a go and see what I can do to improve what I already have in there. The soil is a bit on the clay side, with places worse than others where heavy clay sits. Luckily there is no hardcore or any other rubbish underneath as often is the case with new builds. There is not much of the stones and rocks either. So since I have done the scaryfing, in over the few weeks in March and April I have sprinkled it twice with sharp sand, 50kgs gypsum, two lots of A1 preseeds fertiliser and weed killer, sprayed it couple times with humic fulvic acid, made a holes with hand core aerator, then filled up every single hole with vegetable compost. Then I have made a holes next to it. That was really never ending job. I have also beans to cup coffee machine and making much coffee grounds. This was sprinkled many times over the soil as well. Apparently the good earth worms love it and I have to admit when making and filling the holes I get across a quite a few earth worms so perhaps I have now a coffee addicted worms :-D I have also discovered and killed around 20 disgusting leather jackets larves in the back garden. Again thank You Shaun, because I wouldn't have clue what they are if I didn't watch one of yours short clip about them. So week ago, on Saturday when the temperatures finally gone a bit higher here in North Dorset I have watered down in to the soil, a double dose of Nematodes to combat the leather jackets. The seeds I have covered with the same vegetable compost I have used for filling the holes. I bought myself a compost roller spreader to speed up and help with the job. It wasn't cheap but I was determined and did not have a much time... Overall I did used a 21 bags of compost. Each 50L. Two bags of composted bark to go in to the soil, and one bag of top soil to level up where I have installed pop up sprinklers in the back garden. Sprinkles saved me a lot of time on watering the seeds. My weather forecast was showing a two weeks of rain so I was in the hurry to put the seeds before that, thinking a nature will help me with the germination and save some water. Sadly not a lot of rain actually comes down so I ended up with watering it alot. Sprinklers in the back garden and house pipe in the front. It was very windy when I was seading but with my wheeled seader/spreader it went quite ok. It did costed me a lot of time. And money as well. I have two jobs, working 7 days a week to afford this house so I did not had a much time for doing it but somehow I was desperate and enjoyed it and managed to do it. Week and half after seeding, lots of little green needles comes through. The day after they were twice longer! Seeing like the black, just a few days ago pieces of land becomes greener and greener every day is amazing feeling... I am not kidding it shoot out so much. Everyday they are much longer! It's now two weeks and three days after and You can't tell there wasn't any lawn just a few days ago. Amazing 😍 let's hope this it will last ;-) I'll bet my naighbours think I am mad. My colleague who bought a house on the same estate, seeing the state of my lawns a few weeks ago said to me, it's good job I am not a gardener for a living. And this lawn never again gonna be a lawn. And I may as well concrete it all over it. I have said to him wait and see. Few weeks and it's gonna be lovely. He said, no chance. Not this year Can't wait for his reaction now ;-) I did used a luxury hard wearing mix from A1. I have also used a miracle grow smart lawn, the coated seeds. I wasn't sure which one would be better so I thought I use it both... Anyway I am really sorry for this long writing. And for any spelling as I am not native English speaker and learned language by myself at work over the years ;-) But I thought I'll share my experience. And thank You Shaun because without You I probably wouldn't do it. All the years at my rented property I hated the grass. And now I am enjoying it so much! And I am excited so much about! You are top man. Thank You. I have always thought the british think about the lawns is funny 🤣 bit like about the tea :-D but now I see I have been living here long enough to saturated me as well 😂 so looks like 18 years is enough for it ;-)

@@LawnRight So You went through my text :-) thank You for spending the time to read and answer ;-) it's really mean alot to me. I do know much more now, than I did before. And I really think my new build lawn could be looking good. I have even treated myself to a new lawnmower. Can't wait for it to use it. I just hope the hay fever want spoil it for me once it's gonna kick in June/July. I think I may need to install a french drain as well. But first would like to see what's gonna happen when there is a growing grass, drinking the water. Perhaps it's gonna be better. I don't really want to go through all this hassle and then discover it's now too dry. I have also bought an auger drill bit after your movie and planed to do some dipper holes and fill them up with gravel and organic matter and see if the drainage gonna be improved. I have really wanted to do it before the seeds but simply runned out the time because the time for seeding seemed to be perfect when I did it. And I thought I can always do this later. The water is hold by the soil next to the house, but I am planning to build a decking in there so don't really bother me to much. But strangly there is about one meter wide stripe, which runs along my fencing and this is wet all the time. Rest of the garden can be bone dry and this is still wet. I think it's a combination of more clay in there and shade from the fence. Rest of the garden have quite a lot of sun. Anyway Yours instructions given me a much ideas and confidence. I will repeat some of the treatments regularly. I really want to have the best lawns on my estate :-) All the tools I have bought, are staying with me. I am sure I will use them more than once. I should do it shorter really but I am so excited about, I just can't :-D I know emigration is always a hot topic in the UK. Or everywhere in fact. But I have always feeling like I am welcomed in here. I do feel like I am valued worker for my employers and I have always work hard and during my 18 years in here had only 9 days off sick in total, one when I managed to sprain my ankle and couldn't work and other when covid hit me really hard so I had a big problems to breathe but still managed to get over it fairly quickly completely by myself. I was a young lad back in 2005 when arriving in here. Now I am 41 so most of my adult live I have spent in here. Probably wouldn't do this again if I have chance because it was really hard and crazy think to do. Over the years lots of changes has gone through in both of the countries, here and in my motherland Poland. But I don't regret the decision to come over here. I wouldn't meet so many lovely people. I wouldn't know English language as I do now. Here i have everything I need at the moment. My house, family, work, friends. Both of my kids have been born in here. Generally speaking English people are really nice to live with. Being a lorry driver and takeaway delivery driver I do meet with lots of people over the whole country and have nothing just positive experience. But then I always try to be honest and positive guy and treat others how I would like to be treated myself. Ofcourse sometimes with approach like that I have to get some kicks from live in the back side but I think like in the case of putting love and organic goodness in to the soil of our lawns gives back the good results that doing it in relations with other people in our lives does exactly the same. You do get a occasional weed here and there but then You deal with and have a lovely looking green lawn ;-) Good luck to everyone and lots of luck and enjoyment with our lawns!

@@patryqoo You sound like a very decent hard working guy. I am not at all surprised given your birthplace. I work closely with people from our office based in Wroclaw in Poland every day and without exception they are a really friendly, very bright and hard working bunch. My wife was also an immigrant to the UK as a young child, she comes from the Caribbean Islands and worked tirelessly for the NHS. I too will become an immigrant in the next 12 months or so. Sadly I will be going somewhere so hot it will be impossible to grow a lawn - water is very tight. But the weather encourages an outdoor lifestyle which is what we like. The area is close to the biggest desert in Europe and my workmates in Poland are already booking themselves in for a visit with lots of hot sun and cold beer when we get a place there. 😁 👍

Just scarified and over seeded 2 lawns today, 3 weeks ago I did a scarify and 4 in one so had to wait for the moss to go brown and the weed killer to peter out. Watered them in this evening as no rain expected before 6pm tomorrow. Overcast day forecast, will water in the morning and again when I get home if it hasn’t rained. After that should be good to go ad-hoc, I work from home currently so can take a bit of time to point a hose at the brown mess during the day when it needs it. 👍

If I didn't know better, I would think you were watching the progress of my lawn, as your watering video is right on time. I finished the major renovation yesterday and set the Hunter irrigation system to water for 30 minutes at 0500 in the morning and 1700 evening, with 100-percent coverage. I would not have tried any of this renovation before watching your very good videos.

Scalped the lawn, scarified, then core aerated with Swordman, overseeded. Makes a huge difference. lawn is thicker and greener, used Sprogs and Dogs grass seed. keep up the watering now.

Brilliant. Need to keep the seed damp and warm. I find I can use my Karcher gravity fed by a rainwater butt (raised) to water my lawn. I have also used the “car wash” wand with “shampoo” mixer bottle with some liquid seaweed extract in it. It looks weird pressure washing the lawn though.

I do the same thing you recommend. Must be very careful to increase watering if you get a short hot spell after the seeds germinate. If you don't adjust the watering to the humidity, wind, temperature and cloud cover you could loose those baby grasses. I speak from experience. 😥

3:15 I always worry that I'm hand misting on the top dressing (peat moss or whatever) only and isn't getting the seeds wet underneath. But still I try not to saturate. Sounds like as long as the mist isn't concentrated enough to puddle, then it's good.

Have you looked into any pregermination techniques (soaking in buckets, etc). One advantage is cutting out watering for 3 or 4 days. Supposedly golf courses do this for quick repairs also.

Great advise once again. I have just renovated by lawn after years of no maintenance other than just cutting so hopefully this summer I will at have some grass rather than green moss and weeds. Hi I'd leave it perhaps 4 to 6 weeks for any typical spring fertiliser (one that has a higher Nitrogen value (npk) than the P and K values).. so either just wait for 6 weeks... or chuck a preseed fertiliser on..or even an autumn fertiliser.. but itll be ok without for now.. a1 spring summer fertiliser is pretty good

I have followed steps here with yourself and Robbie think my issue is the soil. Have new build lawn. Have battled with poa etc. Cut short dethached all the dead an weed. New seed down compost existing grass sprouting can see my new grass in under what's the best keep chipping off? This was done nearly 3 weeks ago now. Really want that perfect lawn lol my seed heads like amg r popping everywhere I think. Or is this the seed head maybe that have been planted. Hi Shaun, Many thanks for the video. I watched an earlier one which showed renovation of a very mossy lawn without a moss and weedkiller application. I'm about to renovate one which also has a lot of weeds as well as moss and is very patchy. Should I consider a suitable chemical application after initial scarification and then wait 4-6 weeks to overseed and topdress? I'd prefer not do this as it takes me into the summer and the much more rigorous watering regime essential for success and I'd like to crack on with the job but can it be avoided with a good mowing regime to suppress weeds with the new grass outcompeting them?

Hi yes you've got it.. forget weedkillers for now and do all the rest then give it a good 4 to 5 weeks minimum before spraying any as long as the grass looks in good health 😊

Experimenting with pre-germination I found the seeds in a closed plastic container with rather wet soil seemed to sprout the quickest. Soaked in water, as many vids claim is the best, did not sprout as quick. Kept very moist with seed only, but no soil, was in the middle. So my question Shaun: If pre-germination requires the seeds to actually be "wet" then why would you not make them wet in your lawn - not just damp? I will search to see if you have anything on pre-germination.

Hello and welcome 😊👋👋👋! If you're using a sprinkler I'd aim for about 10 minutes in each spot that the sprinkle hits but don't sweat it too much if sometimes it's less. You're definitely past the hardest part, just keeping it hydrated now is key 😊

Bit of advice please! I scarified/Aerated/Overseeded/topdressed a week ago, and the weathers been horrendous and I think majority of my work has got washed away/soil eroded. Absolutely no germination yet at all a week on, when do I bite the bullet and re seed and cover with topsoil again? I'm really stuck on what to do. What do you think?

Hi itll germinate super fast like 4 days... but... you'll be watering at least 5 times a day to stop it drying out . Then once its all come through you'll have to water deeply 3 to 4 times a week for the rest of summer.. so in short its doable but requires a huge amount of watering and commitment

Hi 😊👋👋. The sumisoaker is good and will soak through a fleece I feel sure. Might be a different opinion in a heatwave whatever that is 🤣. Ultimately keeping things damp is the key. It depends how fats it flows out and you can always use a rain gauge

I'd look to invest in a timer and sprinkler. April's often wet enough but weather can be unpredictable. A good heavy watering in the morning will help if you've compost on top as it will hold on to moisture a little but longer

Hi all I can say is think more of the engine.. Honda or briggs and Stratton.. there are cheaper loncin engines but I've not had good experience with them... as for bells and whistles a roller mower would enable nice stripes so it's just a case of petrol or electric really

Hi.. Ultimately it's just down to make sure it's watered well and how fast the water comes out. With good flow a 10 sq metre may only need a couple of minutes. A 50 sq metre maybe 10 minutes

I soaked my grass seeds in water for 24 h then mixed the seeds with sand and soil and spread allovers my patchy lawn (which cut short) 4 days later the grass is start coming ( i watered twice a day) I am in northern ireland

Hi Shaun I have a large area I’ve just seeded which is approx 16.5m x 16.5m. 2 of the sides are edged one with conifers the other with small shrubs etc. how would I go about watering as the hose spray attachment won’t reach far enough to cover it all without me walking on it?

Hi so you'll have to walk on it.. Just try not to drag the hosepipe as it'll drag seeds with it.. I lift it over rmy shoulder and get help if needed

Hello Shaun, just wondering if you can recommend watering tips for 2 month old sod. It’s starting to show some yellowing thatch in a number of places . Perhaps I have been overwatering. Hand watering on the shower setting every 2nd day. I’m in Victoria BC Canada. Our temperatures are in the low 20 degrees c. much like the UK. For the first few weeks I'd just not bother as you may still have fertiliser in the soil if you used a preseed fertiliser.. if you didnt then a reasonably balanced fert will be fine

Hi there. I’m growing about 200sqm of brand new lawn in tropical Australia. It germinated beautifully but on week 3 it all turned brown. I kept the watering regimen the same throughout the entire time. Is it possible that the grass got scorched by the sun? It has been very hot with 35 plus degree temperatures. Thanks for the video! Under a hosepipe ban in the southwest at the moment and for the foreseeable, so I've been using a semi-fine rose on a watering can after overseeding my lawns, but always unsure whether I'm getting enough down. One of my lawns is 48sq/m and I've been doing 8 - 10 trips with my 10l watering can. I realise there are a lot of variables but I'd appreciate any advice.

Hi legally you can water with a hosepipe for I think 28 or 30 days following any seeding.. please check your water providers website

@@LawnRight Plus, if you happen to leave a tap running into a barrel and have a hose connected to a pump from that barrel to water your lawn, they can’t touch you. They can only nick you for a hose connected to their system. If you just leave the tap from their pipes running their water without an pipe into your barrel, your hose is not connected to their system. Can’t touch you, water away. It is a tiny fraction of a single percentage of what their leaks waste every day so don’t feel guilty.

Hi! .. all seeds will need to be kept damp during germination... if its a lot wetter in the fall which it often is you can reduce watering quite a bit..once we get to winter you should be just fine :)

I had an incline that was like Patch Mountain with very dry rocky ground in-between. I poured 2 tons of soil over the entire incline. I would say I added two inches. Half of the incline, I put seeds under and over. The other half I mixed seed and fertilizer in the soil, before dumping and spreading. I actually watered like you suggested, before seeing your vid. keep it damp. It works but I have to say the half that I premixed is growing faster and more evenly. Ton of work!! but I am staying committed. Thanks for the vid.
