Loved Hampton...this run was special. Saw my first Hampton show in 85. Fantastic venue. You just knew it was a special place when you walked into the arena and saw the general admission setting....so many great memories from this place. Loved it.....miss it.

I was there for this one....Hampton was always one of my favorite venues. It was a classic Bill Graham show...sell as many tickets as you can print, pack em in like sardines, 4 porta poties for 10,000 beer swilling Deadheads.....and one of the best Hell in a Buckets I've heard. The whole band's energy level was high........I got laid at one of the shows in Philly. My buddy and I met two girls.....the tall brunette went for me, the short blonde went for my buddy. Only time I scored with a girl at a show.

This was a great time for the band. Reinventing themselves one more time. Jerry was back feeling good looking good, in love again. They were actually spending some time together. In 87 they recorded a record, worked on a handful of projects and most of all, spent a great deal of time playing together on Front Street; for one rehearsing with Dylan . They rehearsed so many songs with Dylan, they started to get tight again, and it showed. The better they got the more fun they looked like they were having. Some great shows on this run, and more sweet shows in California at the end of April beginning of May right up until the day they released " In The Dark". Then came the stadium shows. The Dylan shows were rough; although most of the Dead's set were pretty good. It was hard to play with Dylan at that time, period! His drinking and the heat on East Coast didn't make anything easier. The crowds were big and destructive... but the band was back and they built on this right up to a couple of great years in 89 and 90. This was about the time the ball got rolling. Thanks Voo!

Thanks Voodoonola2 for posting this show. This was my very first dead show and watching this takes me back to that night in a way that audio only could not. I just did not want it to end. The energy was great and just look at how into it Jerry is. One of the best things about '87-'89 is Jerry's energy level. Probably the best it had been in many years. Hampton was my favorite venue too... so intimate.

For some reason I am unable to reply to "Clay C. Brennecke" below, I wish I could, because I was also caught up in the gate rush scene he describes so well! I was with two young women, both kind of small, both at their first dead shows, all three of us coming on the purple gels that were around, and one of the girls it was her first trip! We had our tickets but got caught in the surge up the ramps that he describes. We were forced to jump over the side of the ramp to the ground, fortunately we were just a few feet up at that point. A crazy scene and one I have never heard anyone else commenting on, strangely enough! I also agree with Clay about the energy in the room. Hampton and Hartford were both like that, it was pretty crazy. What's left on tape isn't as amazing, just another very well played early '87 show, nothing bad, lots of fire and good feeling from the band but nothing out of the box either, but it's an enjoyable show and those of us who were there will never forget what it was like to be part of this night.

Thanks for blending this together, Voodoo! At the time of this show, I was 12 and I got on "The Bus" when In The Dark came out and MTV was promoting it and The Summer of Love. Being from Ohio, there was a lot of GD energy being brought home from the college kids I knew, and this show is a perfect example of why! Musically, 85-90 was pretty much an uptrend period. Big props to damnright4 for being bold enough to get this video in the first place!

My first show, I'm both elated and disappointed to relate...I was already 17, and could have seen more! Hampton 86 for starters! Was living in Hampton Roads from 81 and caught the Dead every chance I could - well, after this. Greensboro 89 (Snoopy and Woodstock were there), Raleigh 90 (I think - bad weather and aggro security), RFK (LET PHIL SING!) just after, London on Halloween 90 (baffled Brits) and the next night (my only Dark Star), Greensboro 91 (Eyes!) were standouts. Was regrettably abroad for The Warlocks in 89...grrr. Amazing to see this and thank you, sincerely, to the poster!

Energy level at this show was through the roof. Many folks showed-up without tickets. Hampton Coliseum and the surrounding area were not prepared. There was a police car keeping throngs of ticketless fans at bay as the fans rushed the large ramps on either side of the entrance; it was a tad bit scary and almost riotous. I was lifted off of the ground by the surging crowd trying to enter the small 2 entrances areas. The show had begun and thousand were still outside; some where holding tickets and others were trying their best to storm the 2nd floor, but that sole police car miraculously kept the crashers at bay without injuring anyone - one of the craziest things I had EVER seen. The Grateful Dead was 'chomping at the bit' to play. More so than any other show I attended, the band seemed fueled by the crowd's energy, and thus the circle between the two began to the delight of all. The Boys played with intent. Brent played so hard physically that his side of the stage bounced up & down. Notice Jerry's glances at Bob in the first set giving him the 'green light' to wind songs down. The sheer ENERGY of this concert, for ones lucky enough to attend, likely made an impermeable impression on everyone in the room. Does any video exist of the mayhem before the show from the pond to the 2 entry points with the police vehicle jotting back and forth to protect the building from crashers and the police chasing those folks back down the ramps???

Not sure if it was this show/run or another, but I remember watching tiny groups of people run around one side of the building upstairs trying to get someone to open a door. Then I guess security would come out and they would all run around to the other side. From the lot it was quite comical and surreal. Always a great show in the spaceship. :)

So. He is other bands have similar issues sometimes now. I find the mature thing is to offer them my ticket and stay out and listen to the grateful dead. Young kids should get in and they should also get the front. I have a hard time putting up with older heads of bands holding space and bullying young people. Am not a phish head at all but am friends with those guys and my son has been going win me to see them since November of 1987. This past year he wa sin a show and fully being bullied by some much older people teasing him saying "how do you like your first show" and kinda pushing him around on the floor. He's a sweet kid. 22. He just moved over a bit. But fuck I bet the 96 shows he has seen going into that run there is more then they have seen. And I also bet he's seen what the band consider their best shows short of Vail 93 and maybe some other 93 and earlier shows- in fact I know he has been in every one of the fans favorites 97 and after and has done a lot of taping. Trey always waves to him and sometimes calls him back to the bus. You know? And older folks pushed him around. Good thing mom wasn't there. They'd be scrambled for a week trying to eat their hands thinking they were cookies. Anyway, I think the best thing is give kids the tickets and sit it out. Even then I did for the dead. Let kids go in. It's good for the world. Peace
