While on day 3 of going thru withdrawals from kicking smack this song came on, I couldn't stop listening to GD thru the whole experience. Uncontrolled tears, crying for hours on end. Such a healing experience. I'm forever Grateful for the music. I got my life back now twice thanks to Jerry, Robert, and the whole band. Now every time I hear Ripple, and To Lay Me Down, I can't hold back the tears. They do know the way, and took me home ❤️

Hey now I got a couple questions for you brother 1. Was Jerry playing piano on To Lay Me Down 2. Who was playing mandolin on Ripple I only hear one guitar 🎸 on TLMD and the NRPS opened up the show so it could’ve been David Nelson Peace ☮️ from Hawaii

Stagger Lee yeah the song was written by Robert Hunter while being drunk in 1970. In the same afternoon he wrote Ripple, To Lay Me Down and Brokedown Palace. While Ripple and Brokedown Palace appeared on American Beauty, To Lay Me Down was released two years later in 1972 in the album Garcia (Jerry’s first solo album). Yeah that’s right Robert Hunter wrote 3 of the best Grateful Dead songs in a single afternoon while being drunk.
