"Since its debut in 1971, Brown-Eyed Women was one of the Dead's most-played first set songs, played almost 350 times. This version is from the terrific 6/22/91 show in Chicago, featuring the short-lived two keyboardist arrangement with Vince and Bruce." -David Lemieux

Not only did they treat him terribly but they forced him to play his keys with that hideous calliope tone!! When I found out that the Dead wouldn't let Vince be Vince & they were behind his god awful sound my heart broke for the man. And Bruce was a terrible addition. So many times I witnessed him get lost or run out of ideas & stop playing. I remember during a Shakedown he got lost in the groove put his hands down & shake his head. The only thing I saw him do & add to the music was @ the lake in Ohio in 91. I can't think of it's name @ the moment. I only saw the band there once however they played Reuben and Cherise & Bruce played a squeeze box & it was great!! I know I'm biased cause I'm an early 80's head but I'd stack up quite a few Northeast show's from Spring 81 to the Autumn of 84 against any other era of shows. 3-9 &10 1981, 4-15-1982, 10-14 & 15 1983, just to name a few. And probably the greatest Peggy O & the best Stella Blue ever played was on 4-12-82. Do your ears, mind, heart & soul a solid & listen to a good audience tape of these shows. Try & find a Barry Glaasberg recording for he made the best tapes!!
@christopherorman57692 жыл бұрын
@@barnaclestval but the keyboard sounds didn't make him play redundant and boring block chords. The keyboards didn't make him an awful singer who simply couldn't harmonize; his singing makes Donna the model of tone and time. When Vince did other projects, such as playing with Zero or Missing Man, his piano playing wasn't some revelation, it was as bad as we all suspected. The fact is, Vince lacked the chops to play with the Dead. The band even knew, holding out hope Hornsby would join full time. No one excuses Keith G., Brent, or Constanten for their poor moments. Vince wasn't close to any of those 3 and thus in my opinion all of the criticism is warranted. Hell, his harmonies here ruin the chorus...just awful.

Only because he saw a player and singer he could never be and he knew the band knew it as well. After Vince became the only keyboardist it isnt as if his playing or singing took off...to the extent it made him feel warm and fuzzy. Btw, his harmonies are just awful..

@@lionofjudah4574 I know the details and have my opinions there too. His death doesn't change the fact he was an awful player, an awful singer, and shouldn't have been in the GD. Im just as critical of Lesh, Garcia, Weirs awful tone and whammy bar stuff, so I don't think I should be no less critical of by far the worst keyboardist to ever play with the GD; a list that includes Ned Lagin and Pigpen, btw.
