Whoever the person was who took the time and effort to assemble this, I really cannot thank you enough. These jams were some of the ABSOLUTE HIGHEST MUSICAL PEAKS that the GD attained during their 30-year lifespan and never fail to transport me to a place of utter bliss when I listen to any of them (even the ones that only got taped by an audience member). Beyond awesome. 👍

These theme jam collections and edits are just priceless. They fall right smack in the middle of whatever my lane as a deadhead is. Never knew I needed em til they got here! I have some ideas for future collections but it seems greedy to mention them. Please know that your work is valued and deeply enjoyed, thanks!

from Khoi Le's video entitled "Grateful Dead | A Beautiful "Tighten Up" Jam" The Tighten Up Jam was a very common Latin-style jam theme in 1970. It's often called a proto-Eyes jam since Weir plays two repeating jazzy chords that are rhythmically similar to the opening of Eyes of the World, but they're from the Archie Bell & the Drells tune. Its first appearance I'm aware of was on 8/30/69, where Weir plays the chords as Garcia's changing a string during Dark Star; it gets a full band performance on 10/25/69. After that they played it steadily for a year, in many Dark Stars and after March '70 in most of the Dancing in the Streets. They apparently dropped it in 1971, except for a surprise appearance on 10/31/71. As we'll see it was normal for the Dead to use a jam-theme interchangeably between two different songs like that, and Tighten Up works well in both of them. (It's surprising it took so long for them to play it in Dancing, since it's similar to the usual Dancing two-chord jam pattern - on 12/11/69 for instance, the Dancing is extremely close to a Tighten Up.)There used to be a webpage devoted to the Dead's Tighten Ups, but it's disappeared. If you follow KZbin into seeking out the actual video described, it will have more links and information available. Tighten Up Jam is a nuance settled into Dead lore..one like Phil's Spazz and Mind Left Body a personal favorite. Another awesome video idea! Thanks Day Job. Nick

@@NicholasOsella hey, I enjoyed your comment... i wonder if you're aware of some research that claims the TIGHTEN UP tag is something of a misnomer...created by early tapers (public servants) for whom that R&B tune was the most familiar frame of reference. This line of thinking says that an equally important if not far more likely source for these breezy major-7th passages is the late 60's R&B instrumental hit SOULFUL STRUT by a band called Young & Holt....it's my personal experience that STRUT is a MF'er of an earworm, not easily forgotten once heard. I heard it on A.M. radio as a kid and loved it ever since. Someone should ask Bob or Phil if TIGHTEN UP or SOULFUL STRUT were the flashpoints for all this improvisation or if tapers and loons like us are just projecting. I recently heard the movement on Miles Davis's "Flamenco Sketches" that Bobby distilled is into his SPANISH JAM riff. This stuff fascinates me to no end! Best Wishes Nicholas!

@@klaussmith Yes it's Dicks Picks 2. In this video the first jam is the last one they played. In my opinion it's the best, it's strange to think it's the last.. if they had continued to play it in the following years would it have improved more and more? Who knows what golden jams they might have made. Who knows why they stopped playing it even though it turned out so well...

Id heard this several times on my tape and adored it but this was the first time he heard it and he ran down the stairs and said what the hell is this. I didnt know it was tighten up so i just said i dont know. It was fun to see him so blown away. Thanks, John!!!
