I have turned people on to the Dead, who did not think they would ever like the band, since the early 80s. Most times I am told 'I did not know', followed by WOW! But, then, there was a point, in the late 70s I did not know, and was surprised.

We are told " IT SELDOM TURNS OUT THE WAY IT DOES IN THE SONG", in a song. That is a mindbending.. Then they take you on musical voyage. Defines trippy.

In the 80s through 95 the dead allowed fans to create, in most parking lots, this area called Shakedown. It was a huge arts, crafts and food carnival started by and for the fans. Once the popo knew this was normal they rarely bothered people, there. It has continued in various forms since the death or Garcia, and will be a major part of the Sphere gathering in may.

You really need to just watch a whole show. This one is a fantastic option, 7/7/89. It’s one of my favorite shows. You can also watch the show before on KZbin, 7/4/89. It’s phenomenal. Just start from the beginning and get your mind right. The rest will take care of itself.

As a few others have noted, "Scarlet Begonias" was, almost always, like here, followed by "Fire On The Mountain', another amazing tune. The Dead were really good at segueing from one song to the next, sometimes almost imperceptibly. It's like, "wow, they're playing another song, wow". I was at the Alpine Valley shows in 1988, during a major heat wave, but it was awesome and part of the best ten days in a row in my life. So effing great. This was the next year, but it's still awesome.

Cool! I saw them on that tour, about a month later given the date on the clip. Sat on the infield about fifty yards from the stage. I mostly remember dancing around alot without crashing into the other people who were dancing around around me. I might have been slightly high for a week afterward, but the details are fuzzy. Hehehehe. Begonias are a common garden flower, reddish pink like a rose without thorns. They look pretty but are mildly toxic, that is, if you can eat some of it without spitting it out first, it will probably make you puke anyway. But it's not listed as toxic to humans on poison control center lists. We have a begonia plant growing next to our house. Sublime dropped an awesome hip-hop cover of "Scarlet Begonias" in the early nineties that's definitely worth a reaction. When you're ready for more from Grateful Dead, check out "Dire Wolf", "St. Stephen", "Golden Road (To Unlimited Devotion)", and for some live tracks, check out "I Know You Rider" from the Fillmore East 1971 and "Fire on the Mountain" from Cornell 1977.

You must check out China Cat Sunflower/I Know You Rider from the Europe 72 album. Its the Grateful Dead at their peak.An amazing 10 minutes 28 seconds of magic.

@@harlanginsberg7269 whoa. Tone it down dude. I was merely pointing out that this band had peak moments throughout their career. The 5/2/72 Paris China Rider (from Europe 72 album) is nice, but so are 8/27/72, 5/19/74 and 9/20/90 among others. Have a grateful day!

1989 was a HISTORIC YEAR FOR THE DEAD try alpine valley the movie is downhill from here the following songs from this night are ALL GREAT UNMATCHED VERSIONS LIKE THIS VERSION OF DEAL they are CHINA RIDER /PLAYIN IN THE BAND/UNCLE JOHNS BAND/GOIN DOWN THE ROAD /NOT FADE AWAY/ they encored with a song everyone knew BUT THEY had not done it in 14 years !!!! the place went nuts they did AND WE BID YOU GOODNIGHT I WAS THERE ALL 3 NIGHTS
