"In and out of the repertoire it goes...St. Stephen was around for a long time, but not always around. It was played consistently 1968-1971, then gone until its return in 1976, when it was played quite a bit through 1976 and 1977, into early 1978. It then returned for three versions twice, 12/30/78 to 1/10/79, and from 10/11/83 to 10/31/83, after which it was never heard live again. This is from the magnificent Closing Of Winterland show." - David Lemieux

Somehow I got lucky and scored a ticket to this show. Spent most of the night way up in the balcony opposite the stage so I could look down on the band... and walked out in the morning into the sunlight... what an amazing night... I don't think I'll ever forget it. And St. Stephen has always been one of my favorite Dead tunes, all the way back to hearing it for the first time when Live Dead came out. For me, it's always been one of their iconic songs.

Listen to Donna singing the chorus in acapella near the end of Deal in 1978 in Eqypt. She had the goods but she NEEDED to be able to hear herself, which she mostly couldn't because they didn't wear ear pieces back then. Notice in the Egypt video she is plugging one ear so she can hear herself, and then she delivers the goods.

If they don't get what she brought to GD, they never will. Absolutely brilliant performance here. Plus here's a hint for all the naysayers. Jerry was very very difficult to harmonize with on any given night.

the near end of the greatest lineup in music history
@stevee231
@stevee231 3 жыл бұрын
Agreed...I think this is their best lineup. It actually surprises me how partial people are to the Mydland lineup. They were at their most adventurous and exploratory with Keith and alot of that I think has to do with Keith's background in modal jazz. He was essentially A jazz player in a rock n roll band, he led them down so may new roads and ESPECIALLY his first 5 years were never matched as far as sheer musical exp!oration. I think its safe to say that Keith was the best, pure musician out of all of the members throughout their history (not counting Branford).
@augustkuuskvere79
@augustkuuskvere79 3 жыл бұрын
@@stevee231 I think people are partial to Brent because they came in during his tenure with the band. That’s where things go massive. It’s where they started, it’s what they’re nostalgic for. Keith was the before time, when Jerry had black hair and the music was wider and deeper.

Saint Stephen with a rose In and out of the garden he goes Country garden in the wind and the rain Wherever he goes the people all complain Stephen prospered in his time Well, he may and he may decline Did it matter, does it now? Stephen would answer if he only knew how Wishing well with a golden bell Bucket hangin' clear to Hell Hell halfway twixt now and then Stephen fill it up and lower down and lower down again Lady finger, dipped in moonlight Writing, "What for?", across the morning sky Sunlight splatters, dawn with answer Darkness shrugs and bids the day goodbye Speeding arrow, sharp and narrow What a lot of fleeting matters you have spurned Several seasons with their treasons Wrap the babe in scarlet colors, call it your own Did he doubt or did he try? Answers aplenty in the bye and bye Talk about your plenty and talk about your ills One man gathers what another man spills Saint Stephen will remain All he lost he shall regain Seashore washed by the suds and foam Been here so long, he's got to callin' it home Fortune comes a crawlin', calliope woman Spinnin' that curious sense of your own Can you answer? Yes, I can What would be the answer to the answer man?

What rig can I use for cheap to get that solo tone?
@vantage11
@vantage11 9 ай бұрын
Get some sort of tube amp, the cheapest one I can think of is a Bugera V22 Infinium, and do what Jerry does and cut the bass down to 0 and use the mid control as a sort of bass control. Maxing out the mids and treble would be a bad decision but use your ears. You can either use the amp’s included overdrive channel or do what Jerry does and use pedals.. I think I’ve seen photos of him with Boss overdrive pedals actually. I’m personally a fan of the tone he gets with strats but he tended to use humbuckers mostly, any guitar should probably work. If he was using an overdrive pedal, I would have to take a guess and assume he probably didn’t have the drive dimed so mess around with the settings in that aspect. Maybe you could change the speaker of that amp to something that’s more vintage sounding. I know he used some sort of JbL guitar speaker but those aren’t in production anymore. I’m pretty sure you could look online for a used one or find another alnico guitar speaker that gets close. I would steer away from celestions mainly because those speakers tend to sound very “british” and dark though they do have a speaker that mimics an American style guitar speaker. I’d probably go with a alnico jensen speaker and that should get you close. Jerry used twin reverbs but he was connecting to PA’s and other cabinets most likely, but that should be a basic rundown of what you can do to get that lead tone.
@vantage11
@vantage11 9 ай бұрын
Ok actually I forgot that later era Dead’ live shows made the switch to Mesa Boogie amps. Those are nice amps and excessively expensive and the mark 1’s have Celestion Custom 90s.. I think your best bet is getting that amp I recommended earlier with that particular Celestion speaker which while still not cheap is much cheaper than just buying a mesaboogie.. though I have to admit I’m not entirely sure of the equipment the other guitarist uses, but I presume he was using Mesa as well!
@vantage11
@vantage11 9 ай бұрын
And in the off-chance that amps distortion channel isn’t too your liking, you could probably find a pedal based off the preamp in those Mesa Boogies and use that to accomplish the sound..

Saul might have thought that Saint Stephen represented King Agag, from the Old Testament. 'I see Heaven opened and the Pharisees (thus Samuel) standing at the right hand of Saul.'

Wishing well with a golden bell, bucket hanging clear to hell, Hell halfway twixt now and then, Stephen fill it up and lower down and lower down again Lady finger, dipped in moonlight, writing what for? Across the morning sky. Sunlight splatters, dawn with answer, Darkness shrugs and bids the day good-bye. Speeding arrow, sharp and narrow, What a lot of fleeting matters you have spurned. Several seasons with their treasons, Wrap the babe in scarlet colors, call it your own. Did he doubt or did he try? Answers aplenty in the bye and bye, Talk about your plenty, talk about your ills, One man gathers what another man spills. Saint stephen will remain, all hes lost he shall regain, Seashore washed by the suds and foam, Been here so long, hes got to calling it home. Fortune comes a crawlin, calliope woman, Spinnin that curious sense of your own. Can you answer? Yes I can But what would be the answer to the answer man? Going where the wind goes Blooming like a red rose breathing more freely Ride our singin' I'll walk you in the morning sunshine Sunshine, daydream, sunshine, daydream Walking in the sunshine Source: Musixmatch Songwriters: Garcia Jerome J / Lesh Philip / Hunter Robert C

2020-10-08: Is this about the Steve Buscemi Test? 🤔 I know, you can’t sub Buscemi in for Jerry. Some of you detractors might say Donna. But I like Donna. I like Buscemi too. Give Buscemi his own tambourine? (I know. I know. Don’t mess with the chemistry! I was just thinking metaphorically out loud.)
