So exciting to see John Cipollina onstage with the Dead. One of the few guitarists that Garcia considered a peer in that genre of music. I saw Cipollina with Quicksilver Messenger Service back in the day and I was maybe 30 feet from him with a clear view. It was glorious. He was a true innovator who left us too soon.

The acoustics in Winterland left a lot to be desired. It certainly wasn't a holy grail of anything. Great American Music Hall, Berkeley Community Theater, Fillmore Auditorium--- all Bay Area venues with far better acoustics than Winterland. The Oakland Colosseum Arena had better acoustics.

@@johnpetro9308 I never saw the Dead there, but did in those other venues. I saw Quicksilver there and Little Feat--- new year 1976, I believe. There's a video of the Quicksilver show here on KZbin. So silly with Gary and Dino and their shark tooth earrings jiggling in synch. I saw someone here who characterized Winterland as "sweaty". Being that my visit was on New Year's Eve, I felt it was a bit dank and drafty, though isn't all the Bay in January, usually?

When I was 17 we drove from Coeur d Alene idaho to San Francisco to see the dead at the civic on Chinese New Year. it was the first time I saw palm trees. I remember we were walking around the park across the street. A guy walked up and in his rain coat and he had eighths and quarter ounces safety pinned to the inside of his jacket just like I saw on TV. it was a trip. Then I bought a two dollar hit of acid and had the best time. I'll never forget it as long as I live. So many different kinds of people dancing together. it was beautiful! and let's not forget the Chinese dragon spaying people with a fire extinguisher between sets. amazing

I was never a Donna or Kieth fan. When Brent got on board it was obvious to me that letting them go was one of the best things to ever happen with this band. Brent brought a spark that lit the bands ass up. Each year after that, every spring I'd say; "They're even better than last year!" because it was true! That's how it was until Brent checked out. After that It seemed to get slowly get worse. Vince just didn't fit. That's what I thought anyway.

Honestly, saw the Greatful Dead, must ta see 'em in '77 in LA. They were the butt assed most butt-assed most boring band,. since the "warmup;" band. From the Bay Area I loved the Jegfferson's/all incarnations, cept two, one was the one with Gtrace, but without Paul, but with, Bal;in, but with Mickey. Best Statrship: "Blows Against the Empire". Graces's ouote;" It's a fresh wind that blows againgst the empire".

was there that night as I was many nights at Winterland was always my favorite place to see them and New Years shows always brought out their best or maybe it was the acid or the crowd or the fact that it was a time of such freedom of mind and space . I remember relay races and volleyball before shows it was tribal it was over indulgence and it was the greatest times I've ever had .

​@@lukasage8487I think it was literally from adrenaline lol bc he'd only been doing heroin for 3 years at this point (I know that's a lot of heroin but he wasn't shooting it, although Phil was). My wager is he just did so much acid and DMT that he basically had Christ Himself in the back of his head screaming at him for most of his life which will wear anyone down if theyre trying to fit in with a group of fucking degens like the Dead. His conscience was ripping him in two directions and the only thing he could think to stop it was heroin, probably because it actually works unfortunately. Also probably panic attacks from doing so much coke and speed that he constantly went into stimulant psychosis
