"When we were producing the DVD of The Grateful Dead Movie in 2004, the first unreleased song we transferred to see if we'd be able to include bonus songs was this version of Sugaree. It was selected for a number of reasons: it was excellent; there were several camera angles filmed, and it was short-enough to do a test on. Once the 16mm film was transferred and edited, and then synced with the audio, we realized we'd be able to include plenty of bonus material. This wonderful Sugaree began that process." - David Lemieux

For the first time I really listened to Kreutzmann's drumming on THIS song. I'd always liked his playing but I couldn't figure out why. Now I got it. He held his sticks in the "traditional grip" instead of "matching" in the American style. He didn't begin playing jazz, but he LEARNED about playing in that style on his own, following some of the outstanding jazz players at the time. What a guy! I also learned that he learned a lot about drumming from...guess who? Mickey Hart, of course!

its super nice. I heard it was the heroine that started to get him and started to effect his pipes. Its messed up what a few years on heroine can do to a person, if you want to see a zombie absolutely shred a guitar watch the Dead in the early-mid 80s. Hey man, we're all essential. I don't think Jerry would have put up with this nonsense for 1 minute

I’ve been big into the scene, but then a buddy introduced me to Jerry Garcia and The Grateful Dead as a whole and I was hooked. This song initially, and then literally every song he performed live. Just the best of the best

Sugaree- lyrics When they come to take you down When they bring that wagon around When they come to call on you And drag your poor body down Just one thing I ask of you Just one thing for me Please forget you knew my name My darlin' Sugaree Shake it, shake it Sugaree Just don't tell them that you know me Shake it, shake it Sugaree Just don't tell them that you know me You thought you was the cool fool And never could do no wrong Had everything sown up tight How come you lay awake all night long? Just one thing I ask of you Just one thing for me Please forget you knew my name My darlin' Sugaree Shake it, shake it Sugaree Just don't tell them that you know me Shake it, shake it Sugaree Just don't tell them that you know me You know, in spite of all you gained You still had to stand out in the pouring rain One last voice is calling you And I guess it's time you go Just one thing I ask of you Just one thing for me Please forget you knew my name My darlin' Sugaree Shake it, shake it Sugaree Just don't tell them that you know me Shake it, shake it Sugaree Just don't tell them that you know me Shake it up now Sugaree I'll meet you at the jubilee And if that jubilee don't come Baby I'll meet you on the run Just one thing I ask of you Just one thing for me Please forget you know my name My darlin' Sugaree Shake it, shake it Sugaree Just don't tell them that you know me Shake it, shake it Sugaree Just don't tell them that you know me Shake it, shake it Sugaree Just don't tell them that you know me Shake it, shake it Sugaree Just don't tell them that you know me

Asked to jam w ukulele and guitar players, on my vintage bass...so I have been listening to several versions, but this and one other are the best. Love the groove...
