God used this song to turn me to Jesus. Got sober in 1993 and never looked back. Saw 1st ever Unbroken Chain at the Spectrum sober. Miss Jerry, love Jesus. Will always be grateful for this song.

Pray for the Lord to continue to bless you. I also used to take many legal & illegal substances that are intoxicating. Been many years since I have taken any intoxicating substance thanks to Jesus & the Holy Spirit changing me. Have seen the Dead live many times & still listen to them along with jazz & Southern Gospel music.

I used to wonder what I could do later in my life when Grateful Dead shows were no longer an option. there's the Dead & co or Phil shows out west and several musical options of high quality but they are not Grateful Dead. I miss Jerry G. I don't wish to appear dismissive or ungrateful in re the other musicians, I thank & love you all, but again, I miss you, Jerry. Thank you for what you've given me.

Chris Rutherford I’m so eternally grateful for the combination of the extensive collection of recordings, both audio & video, of Jerry along with my 200+ shows, co-mingling and producing the effect of once again being in the throngs of like minded people enjoying Jer’s liquid drops of crystalline sunshine exploding from the sound systems and floating on the airwaves inside, then outside the venues.

Russell George. Folly? The drugs? The addicts? The HARD WORK, the folly, the maniacal b.s. of people wanting us to defend a lifestyle of, "we're different, we're not like you, we do drugs." That's the only place I can put your thought of 'folly' on and I mean no disrespect. Folly, no friend. There would never be paychecks. Funny, never do I view any part of my life as, folly. I think that's way too flippant.

Just hearing his voice makes me remember what a great time I had when Jerry was around. My god all those shows, all those highs, I wouldn't change any of it even if I could. I only wish he were still here, playing and singing. I was 11 when I saw them for the first time. 0ver 300 shows later, I still can recall almost all of them. What I miss the most is how I felt inside when they lit up their guitars and sang . Nothing makes me feel that way except them. My favorite show? Winterland . Retirement show. My ticket had " the last one " printed on it. It was the last ticket sold, on the last day of show, and the last time the Dead would play together. Thank God the last part wasn't true. I got everyone in the band to sign my ticket, even uncle Bobo sighed it. Love you guys, not fade away, now and forever!

This song is so magnificently Melancholy...but at the same time, so beautiful & compelling. I first heard this on their double-Live album back in 1970. Ran out immediately and bought all the Dead albums I could find. As luck would have it, that was the YEAR that "American Beauty" and "Workingman's Dead" were released. I became a Dead fan for life......

if this song doesn't make you shed a tear when you hear it, then you just don't it. and likely never will..I was unfortunate to be born just a few years too late to get a chance to see him in person. but Jerry is has become the closest thing to a deity that I've ever found..he has been guiding me thru the good and bad times of life since I my mind was opened. it's like hes singing directly to and for you. no one comes close to him. jerry voice and poetry (with the help of Robert hunter of course) will always endure the test of time..,

Such a dynamic band. When Jerry said "Let's go boys" they were off like a rocket.

Bob Weir! Check out what he plays behind Jerry’s solo. One of the greatest guitar duos ever. They compliment each other perfectly!

Kerry's chromatic phrasing is fluid. Nobody has ever touched his ability to string together chromatic runs.

Old man down Way down, down, down by the docks of the city Blind and dirty Asked me for a dime, a dime for a cup of coffee I got no dime but I got some time to hear his story My name is August West, and I love my Pearly Baker best more than my wine More than my wine More than my maker, though he's no friend of mine Everyone said I'd come to no good, I knew I would Pearly, believe them Half of my life I spent doin' time for some other fucker's crime The other half found me stumbling 'round drunk on Burgundy wine But I'll get back on my feet again someday The good Lord willin' If He says I may I know that the life I'm livin's no good I'll get a new start, live the life I should I'll get up and fly away, I'll get up and fly away, fly away Pearly's been true True to me, true to my dyin' day he said I said to him I said to him, "I'm sure she's been" I said to him, "I'm sure she's been true to you" I got up and wandered Wandered downtown, nowhere to go but just hang around I've got a girl Named Bonnie Lee, I know that girl's been true to me I know she's been, I'm sure she's been true to me Songwriters: Jerry Garcia / Robert Hunter

Was just thinking that if Brent hadn't passed away, he would have killed it during the '90 European shows. Although, Bruce and Vince weren't so bad either. I was very fortunate to have toured those shows with my older brother
