this performance turned me into a Phish/Trey fanatic. For years, I'd dismissed Trey as a "bad singer" and I couldn't get with Phish's "goofy lyrics". But for these shows, I laid my past thoughts behind and watched with open eyes, mind, and heart. Early on in the performance, Trey was obviously as enamored with the Dead's music as I had been, and approached this song with such joy, such love, and he flashed this incredible blissful smile. That smile and the joy from which it came, melted my cold stone heart and changed my attitude about him one and for all. And his stellar playing throughout the shows proved to me that he deserved his role in that band on that tour. So I surrendered to the flow..... and have a wonderful new world to explore.... after all these years.

I think the Dead is always going to remain a very special and influential band because their music lets honest musicians explore themselves in a way which recorded music often does not. I am a big Deadhead and I don't have the slightest difficulty imagining Jerry playing what Trey did. Jerry's gift is that he created a space which he defined, but instead of fortifying it, he left us infinite suggestions of what COULD be done. Grateful Dead's music = infinite possibilities

WeTalk440 Yes, I have been smoking a lot. But that is Jerry Garcia. You are confused. Maybe you have been smoking a lot more than me. I don't know who this Trey guy is, but I am pretty sure he is not good enough to play with the Grateful Dead. You really shouldn't even joke about such things. It is borderline sacrilegious. I've been a die hard Dead fan for decades (back in the day I used to help carry their amps), and Jerry jokes are usually in bad taste. Show some respect for Jerry and the Dead. One day, God forbid, Jerry will be gone and you will feel like an asshole. Clearly, Jerry is taking much better care of himself. He must be working out and eating well. Jerry should be applauded and encouraged for his lifestyle change, not disrespected. Shame on you!

Back to the huge smile I had all weekend thank you!!
Everybody commenting on how happy trey looks up on stage with those guys... People forget Phish was inspired by the Grateful Dead. He's living a dream playing up there with the surviving members of course he's enjoying it!!!!

I heard trey once say that jerry was the best guitar player ever in an interview and the audience cheered. It was a great moment and shows what trey thinks of jerry too

Just love seeing Trey so happy, his permagrin is awesome! I think we all forget how close Trey was to going down the same dark road as Jerry and thankfully for him...and us...he got it back together. Rock on guys!

Trey's now around Jerry's age when he passed over too. The more and more I get older, the sadder it is to have had J leave this reality so soon. His energy was 1000% there those nights and was palpable...

I'm trying desperately to get my band Traveler's Fold some presence. It's old school jam band rock n roll the likes of the Dead, Widespread, Phish, the Band, etc. Please check it out and give our dual album releases Dog Tooth and River Bend here on KZbin a listen; it will give us a sorely needed morale boost and I promise you won't be let down by what you hear; thank you.
