this performance turned me into a Phish/Trey fanatic. For years, I'd dismissed Trey as a "bad singer" and I couldn't get with Phish's "goofy lyrics". But for these shows, I laid my past thoughts behind and watched with open eyes, mind, and heart. Early on in the performance, Trey was obviously as enamored with the Dead's music as I had been, and approached this song with such joy, such love, and he flashed this incredible blissful smile. That smile and the joy from which it came, melted my cold stone heart and changed my attitude about him one and for all. And his stellar playing throughout the shows proved to me that he deserved his role in that band on that tour. So I surrendered to the flow..... and have a wonderful new world to explore.... after all these years.

I think the Dead is always going to remain a very special and influential band because their music lets honest musicians explore themselves in a way which recorded music often does not. I am a big Deadhead and I don't have the slightest difficulty imagining Jerry playing what Trey did. Jerry's gift is that he created a space which he defined, but instead of fortifying it, he left us infinite suggestions of what COULD be done. Grateful Dead's music = infinite possibilities

I do feel lucky to have seen ratdog and the fare thee well shows, it's better than no grateful dead music at all, future generations won't be able to see anybody from the dead. Even though I missed jerry, I feel lucky to have seen the other great musicians that I have seen. Hopefully the music never stops, god bless the grateful dead.

Went from being the bane of the average deadhead's existence when he was picked to no one (even on the Internet!) can say a bad thing about him The Phish tour that starts in two days should be one hell of a good time. I honestly won't be surprised if they actually play a few Dead songs (haven't since Terrapin Station as an encore in 98 on the 3rd anniversary of Jerry's death, and maybe 10 years before that)

Phish played Scarlet Begonias -> Fire on the Mountain at what is to be considered their first show ever, before they were even called Phish, on 12/2/83, before being drowned out by the house music (this was at a semi-formal at UVM). This was the moment I knew Trey was the right guy for the job. Only made it to the shows on 3rd and 5th, but it was enough to know that the legacy of the Dead was not only sealed, but strengthened, by the Fare Thee Well shows.

Trey obviously does a fine job, but I genuinely can't understand how anyone could think that his guitar playing is better than Mayer's. I always listen to the Trey versions with an open mind - he does fine and is enjoyable. I just find it so obvious that Mayer's playing is in a whole separate league. Trey plays like a pro... Mayer plays like a virtuoso

The GD played Scarlet > Fire at the show that Trey referenced as having been one of the shows that changed his trajectory - 10/14/83 (DP #6)....look around youtube, he does an interview with Bobby and jokes that there's no way that Bobby remembers the show, but he does! Not for the same reasons as Trey obviously...I'm sure that Trey was cracking up during the intro, thinking "I can't believe I'm actually playing this song with these guys"....great moment

When I see Trey smile on stage like this in recent years, at the same time as it makes me happy and thankful that Trey was able to beat his demons and clean up, it makes me sad that Jerry wasn't able to. Although Jerry lives on in spirit through the music he helped create being played still to this day, I wish he were physically here with us still playing with the boys.

The dude from phish is a good guitar player as is around. no one is doubting this. however, hi vocal phrasing scans like some random joker hitting up a karaoke bar after work to sing his favorite 'jerrry' tune... arrr

Travis Crum Clearly Trey past his prime or out of his vocal range. Wow this is supposed to be the Baby Jesus who the torch got passed to. I wouldn't go out of my way to dis anyone. But where the hell is the groove. For goodness sakes this was the last show. Maybe the fruitcake producer could have had a little creativity. Couldn't they have gotten Smokey Robinson, or Bobby McFerrin, or The Great Susan Tedeschi sing this hot number. I.m just a frustrated critic

WeTalk440 I think you misunderstood me. I think Jerry looks really good here . Looks like he is living a much healthier lifestyle. He has lost a lot of weight. And without the beard, he looks at least 20 years younger. Thin Jerry is still a terrific great guitar player and a cool cat.

WeTalk440 Yes, I have been smoking a lot. But that is Jerry Garcia. You are confused. Maybe you have been smoking a lot more than me. I don't know who this Trey guy is, but I am pretty sure he is not good enough to play with the Grateful Dead. You really shouldn't even joke about such things. It is borderline sacrilegious. I've been a die hard Dead fan for decades (back in the day I used to help carry their amps), and Jerry jokes are usually in bad taste. Show some respect for Jerry and the Dead. One day, God forbid, Jerry will be gone and you will feel like an asshole. Clearly, Jerry is taking much better care of himself. He must be working out and eating well. Jerry should be applauded and encouraged for his lifestyle change, not disrespected. Shame on you!

It's old school jam band rock n roll the likes of the Dead, Widespread, Phish, the Band, etc. Please check it out and give our dual album releases Dog Tooth and River Bend here on KZbin a listen; it will give us a sorely needed morale boost and I promise you won't be let down by what you hear; thank you.
