🥀🌻🐕There was a 'Looks Like Rain' Bobby did that was so impassioned for that day his dog had died. Gave impetus to the line 'felt your side of the bed; covers were still warm where you been layin'... a misty SF rain ☔ was fallin' down when leaving the show.

I was at this show. First show was Veneta 82. Scored the rail and so much of the show was so new, but damn did they make me stick with it. Saw over 80 shows and after Jerry died, I tried to keep the magic alive by hitting up all the post-Jerry incarnations. But it eventually faded and I found some of that regular joy with other bands. Galactic, Poi Dog, Los Lobos, New Mastersounds, many more. But none hit as deep as the Dead. To this day, can’t listen to D&C, a pale cover version. Without Jerry in the dream, it will never come true is true for me.

Not kidding. Veneta 82 was my "official" last show. I was making it known, I'm done. Leaving tour after 4 years, had just turned 19 and had lost count at 250 shows in 1981. Time to move along. Only saw them maybe 5 times afterward. One man gathers lol. That was funky show! Did you wander towards the middle area towards the back? There was a spot where the twirlers had found. The back echo from the hills in the back matched perfectly with the sound off the stage. Not loud but if you were high enough it felt like there were two stages. Damn it was hot that day. I met Bill Graham and Ken Kesey in the soundtent. Just nodded at them and said, I just want to say nice stuff! then immediately left them to their convo. And we got a Dupree's return buddy ;) Veneta was a damn good place to start. Phil was clipping the PA to be an asshole. Old habits of playing tricks used to come out in Oregon. Be well! As the youngsters say, Weir everywhere.

I feel same. I saw only one post Jerry D&Slow with Warren Haynes & I'm not a fan of other people singing Jerry songs, even Mayer. There's too much real incredible original music out there now. Jazz, Bluegrass,Americana, etc. Gillian Welch, David Rawlings Machine, it's endless. After seeing GD 77 times &.JGB 25 times, everything else is lacking. I did see Bob do an amazing BT Wind at Viejas once but...

You may be right about that -- I was just a young teen at the time and I saw them live for the first time in spring 1983. Although I was really happy at finally getting to see them, I remember thinking of how low-key Garcia seemed to me, always playing with his head down, standing in the shadows and barely moving. Dare I say he seemed distracted at times. He seemed closed off and inaccessible. Many years later after he passed, I learned Garcia was getting pretty heavy into his Persian addiction at this time, and it was affecting his performances and his morale. I've never seen anyone who seemed so bored at being a rock star. In subsequent shows from both the Dead and Garcia Band I saw over the next 5 years or so, we always went with the hope Garcia would perk up, smile, or show some enjoyment at what he did, and when he did shine through and had his great moments and good nights, the memory of them sustained me for a long time, and for that alone I am thankful for having seen him play live in person. I never saw them again after Brent Mydland died.

Love this and the bird song from the same show a few weeks ago. Wonder if this'll be the next meetup at the movies? I think in terms of officially released concerts we go from dead ahead (1980) to ticket to new years and VFTV4 (1987) so if the full concert is in the vault it could happen :)
