Pride was born on March 18, 1934, in Sledge, Mississippi. When Pride was 14, his mother purchased him his first guitar and he taught himself to play. Though he loved music, one of Pride's lifelong dreams was to become a professional baseball player. His elder brother, Mack Pride, played Negro league baseball before entering the ministry.
In 1953, he signed a contract with the Boise Yankees, the Class C farm team of the New York Yankees. During that season, an injury caused him to lose the "mustard" on his fastball, and he was sent to the Yankees' Class D team in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. Later that season, while in the Negro leagues with the Louisville Clippers, two players - Pride and Jesse Mitchell - were traded to the Birmingham Black Barons for a team bus. "Jesse and I may have the distinction of being the only players in history to be traded for a used motor vehicle," Pride later said in his 1994 autobiography.
His break came when Chet Atkins heard a demo tape and got Pride a contract. In 1966, he released his first RCA single, "The Snakes Crawl at Night”. Nashville manager and agent Jack D. Johnson signed Pride. Atkins was the longtime producer at RCA who had made stars out of country singers such as Jim Reeves, Skeeter Davis, and others. Pride signed with RCA in 1965. "The Snakes Crawl at Night" did not chart. On the records of this song submitted to radio stations for airplay, the singer was listed as "Country Charley Pride". Pride disputes that the omission of a photo was deliberate; he stated that getting promoters to bring in a Black country singer was a bigger problem: "People didn't care if I was pink. RCA signed me ... they knew I was colored ... They decided to put the record out and let it speak for itself.”
Soon after the release of "The Snakes Crawl at Night", Pride released another single called "Before I Met You", which also did not chart. Not long afterwards, his third single, "Just Between You and Me", was released. This song finally brought Pride success on the country charts. The song reached number nine on Hot Country Songs on February 25, 1967.
The success of "Just Between You and Me" was enormous. Pride was nominated for a Grammy for the song the next year. In the late summer of 1966, on the strength of his early releases, he was booked for his first large show, in Detroit's Olympia Stadium. Since no biographical information had been included with those singles, few of the 10,000 country fans who came to the show knew Pride was Black and discovered the fact only when he walked onto the stage, at which point the applause trickled off to silence. "I knew I'd have to get it over with sooner or later," Pride later remembered. "I told the audience: 'Friends, I realize it's a little unique, me coming out here - with a permanent suntan - to sing country and western to you. But that's the way it is.' “
In 1967, he became the first black performer to appear at the Grand Ole Opry since founding member DeFord Bailey, who had last appeared in 1941. Between 1969 and 1971, Pride had eight singles that reached number one on the US Country Hit Parade and also charted on the Billboard Hot 100: "All I Have to Offer You (Is Me)", "(I'm So) Afraid of Losing You Again", "I Can't Believe That You've Stopped Loving Me", "I'd Rather Love You", "Is Anybody Goin' to San Antone", "Wonder Could I Live There Anymore", "I'm Just Me", and "Kiss an Angel Good Mornin'".
Ultimately, Elvis Presley was the only artist who sold more records than Pride for RCA.
In 1971, Pride released what would become his biggest hit, "Kiss an Angel Good Mornin'", a million-selling crossover single. The same year, he won the Country Music Association's entertainer of the year award, as well as its top male vocalist award in 1971 and 1972.
"Kiss an Angel Good Mornin'" became Pride's signature tune. Besides being a five-week country number one in late 1971 and early 1972, the song was also his only pop top-40 hit, hitting number 21, and reaching the top 10 of the Adult Contemporary charts, as well.
Pride performed the national anthem before game six of the 1980 World Series. On May 1, 1993, Pride became a member of the Grand Ole Opry.
Pride died from complications related to COVID-19 in Dallas, on December 12, 2020. He was 86 years old.

First time commenter...I saw Charlie in London Ontario Canada in 2012 (The same city Johnny Cash proposed to June Carter)..To be present to watch that man sing was a life long dream of mine...He sounded just like his records..He sang his old songs perfectly...I was up in the middle of the balcony and there was no one at the end so I went and sat there by myself...He walked to the corner of the stage and looked up..I waved and he waved back..I was so excited I started to cry...lol..He saw me and stood there looking at me while he finished his song..Then waved again and walked back to the middle of the stage..At the very end of the show, people were walking up to shake his hand..He bent down and was more like slapping people's hands as he walked off stage..A lady pushed an elderly man in a wheelchair to the stage and when Charlie saw that he stopped dead in his tracks...Knelt down and shook that man's hand..He spoke privately in his ear...It was such a touching moment...Such class..Such respect..He loved his fans and he made sure he told us so..Said he appreciated us because he never wanted to go back to Sledge MS to pick cotton again..I cried like a baby when he died...Just Between You And Me was my fav Charlie Pride song. May he truly RIP ❤ Thanks for the video..Just subscribed...😊

Charlie Pride was the one who broke the race barrier in country music when he started playing in that music scene. I heard that on the American Country Countdown when Bob Kingsley hosted that radio show on Sunday out in Southern California. I might have saw he perform at a radio show fundraiser in Long Beach, California as I was driving by on the local 605 freeway after heading home from work. Charlie was a victim of the COVID-19 pandemic where he got and it was before the vaccines were available to everyone. If it is hot out there in Dallas and the humidity is up there too, you might as well head home or back to your hotel room, if you don’t need to be outside in this extremely hot weather, just stay indoors.

Nonchalantly finding Bonnie Parker and walking off? You're killing me (as I just did an episode on Bonnie and Clyde in Kansas City and haven't got to Dallas yet). LOL I hope you have a future episode! LOL. I want to tell you that in 1986 I saw Charley Pride perform in my native state of California and as a member of the media I had a chance to go in the RV backstage for an interview. I remember he told us how he was telling his son that the vocals of Steve Perry of Journey sounded a lot like Sam Cooke. I began noticing that after he said that. My wife was present and when we asked for a photo op with him, he slapped his lap and asked her to sit there. She said something like, "Oh, I weigh too much," to which he said, "Nah, my wife is bigger than you and she hasn't hurt me yet." Memorable times! FYI, I love "Kiss An Angel Good Morning." My sweet late wife loved his "Burgers and Fries and Cherry Pies." Hard to think of him as dead. Time marches on and waits for nobody.

The cemetery she is in is across the road from where Charlie is at. I forgot to even visit Clyde lol. Dallas is a beast to a country boy like me. Yosemite looks awesome. That’s one of those places on my vision board for the family lol. I bet you needs days there to see everything. The shoot out spot was really neat. I have to go back to Dallas and either do a JFK video or Bonnie and Clyde thing. That’s a tough choice.

I wish I knew you were visiting this cemetery I would have advised you of the former Organized Crime Figures of Dallas interred there. I addition, I wish you had dropped to your knees and prayed for RAIN in and around Dallas. I am a retired Dallas Cop and would drink coffee at the Denny's on North Central Expressway near Meadow Road and Charley would stop in often and we always talked about baseball, he was an amazing historian of his favorite sport. A true gentleman and always polite to everybody, telling me, "this is so much better than pulling cotton". He is missed.

Thanks Jason. I was born in the Memphis area in '67 and Charley Pride was all over the local country stations there as far back as I can remember. Kiss an Angel Good morning and Mississippi Cotton Pickin' Delta Town were two of my mother's (who was born in Kasciusko Mississipp) favorite songs as well as my own. It is hard to pick one favorite Charley Pride song. I also love his gosphel renditions of Build me a Cabin in Glory Land and I'll Fly Away. As an adult, I had the blessing of a chance meeting with Charley Pride at Bush Airport down In Houston several years ago, and he was a true gentleman as well as a great artist.

I was the stage manager for Charley at his theatre in Branson although he and I did a lot of road miles together also. Always a humble & gracious man. I miss him a lot.

this is not susan, i am joe her husband. i was in the record business in the early 70s and met most of the artists recording at that time. the two that stand out in my memory as class individuals are niel diamond and charley prtde. both were very intelligent, without being full of themseves. may charley rest i peace and niel have a easy time with his sickness. may god bless you both and hold you in the palm of his hand
