There’s so many small details in this movie that make it so relatable, so human, and so sad. From the aunt immediately scolding Seita and asking if he contacted his father instead of consoling the fucking child for his loss to Seita finally breaking down his stay-strong facade after Setsuko tells him she knows their mom is dead because the purpose of the facade was only to protect the innocence of his sister. What a stab in the heart.

@@renatolaranja52 It's not the fault of Seita, he was a fricking 14 year old so he was practically a kid himself, yet the war caused the two to completely lose their parents. Seita was way to young to deal with the trauma of losing both his parents, getting treated like garbage by others and taking care of his sister all together. He did everything in his power to stay strong for his sister and provide for her and himself aswell. The fact that he thought she was JUST sick and that she would get better soon is pretty self explanatory that he was innocent aswell. By the time he realised that his sister was slowly dieing it was too late. So, it is not the fault of Seita nor is he the culprit of Setsukos death, it's the fault of polititions and the government for starting the war in the first place.

The author, Akiyuki Nosaka actually admitted that he wasn't giving enough food to his sister, in order for him to survive because of the fact that there wasn't just enough food for both of them, and he did get relieved when his sister died, but tbh if he didn't do that they'd have both probably end up dying by starvation. The reality is much more bitter.

I Doubt it you see it's their story. The difference between their story and ours is that They made it. Even if they made the movie the story went along with their imagination so they can convince them self of any happy ending they want too. We are not in control of the ending so when we see something happen all we can do is hope that it ended well. That's why when you are left on an unanswered question your mind cannot relax until the Director confirms a happy ending for example Your Name SPOILER In Your Name even tho they met again everyone wanted to confirm their relationship rather than imaging it with their head.

I see a lot of discussions about “this country deserved it because they did xyz” or “this country was justified in doing xyz” in the comment section of videos about this film. If this film teaches you anything, I hope it inspires you to think beyond those abstract “countries” and political justifications and to give a thought to the countless innocent people who get caught up in conflicts because they just so happened to be born at the wrong place at the wrong time. However justified or holy your cause may be, wars do have casualties and consequences on both sides.

"just" wars is just a made up modern concept used to justify war. There are never good and bad guys in wars, and it's always innocent people who pay the ultimate price for other people's crimes. People who argue Japan "had it coming" for continuing to wage war or that the protagonists of this movie deserved it (it's a movie ffs, a story) are horribly misguided and without compassion -- not to mention they missed the point. It's not about the US is right or Japan is right, because neither were. No noncombatant civilian deserves to die, and many times it's their lives which slip through the cracks when two parties fight major wars. The sad irony is that many times such "tactical" carpet bombings had little to no effect on a nation's ability wage war except killing thousands of innocents and ruining the lives of countless others.

Highly, highly recommend It's a funny ass book (though kinda un-PC today), but it deconstructs identity/nationalism/religion/etc within the context of the Cold War & mutually assured destruction and shows how destructive human selfishness and unwavering faith in social constructs can be

Ghibli films taught me 500000000000000 things that Disney never has, and I've grown up with my mom as a Disney addict, always playing Disney movies and literally everyone I know is a Disney fan because not many people watch Ghibli movies in New Jersey because they are idiots who stereotype all anime (which is ridiculous) But in all honesty I have never learned better lessons than the ones that Hayao Miyazaki and Isao have taught me

I picked this up at the local library about 6 or 7 years ago thinking, "Hey, it's Ghibli, it must be good!" I didn't bother reading anything about it at all, just grabbed the DVD and went. Put it in that evening alone. Cried my eyes out. I was so unprepared for the tragedy of this one it hit me out nowhere and ripped my heart out. Such a beautiful film and moving story but oh my god it's so sad. Starts sad, teases you with happiness, then crushes your entire heart. People need to keep in mind that this movie was not created send out anti-war messages, or put the blame on Americans (This was publicly clarified by the creators of the movie). It beautifully illustrates the conflicting interactions between individuals and the Japanese society during the chaotic periods during the pacific war. The original story was written based on the actual story of the author, from the guilt of allowing his sister die from starvation during the war from starvation. Each character has flaws, and makes mistakes that leads to its consequences, while also illustrating heart warming aspects despite desperation during war, such as the lady who gave rice balls to Seita when he was nearing his death at the station. Regardless your view towards history, I believe this movie is a masterpiece that allows you to think about the various interactions that takes place, beyond simply feeling sad, allows the audience to develop various interpretations.

@@fortunefavoursthewriterYes, was that supposed to be a takedown gotcha moment? It shows the realities of war, that’s basically every good anti war film ever made. The creators can say this film isn’t anti war but they could also say this film is a live action period piece set in the 1650s, just saying it doesn’t make it true, this is clearly anti war.
@fortunefavoursthewriter
@fortunefavoursthewriter Жыл бұрын
@connorbranscombe6819 But showcasing the civilian point of war makes it anti-war? Showcasing the atrocities of war makes it anti-war? So all war movies should just glamorize and show the one-sided heroics of war? Those are the movies that are accurate? Yeah right. Like you said, just because someone says it, doesn't make it true. Just because you believe only the golden side of war should make an accurate movie. Doesn't make it true. And I'm not trying to 'take down' anything. I'm trying to showcase an educated, realistic perspective. Anyone who's actually been through war, who's touched it, knows it's absolutely terrible. George Orwell fought it a war and writes of it's horrors and uselessness. Hayao Miyazaki himself lived through wars and bombing. But I'm supposed to take your opinion as the correct one. Some simple minded child who watched a war movie and couldn't enjoy the cool action packed scenes???? Go read a history book and grow up.

The age gap between my younger sister and I is around the same as the siblings in this film. I loved being a part of her growing up, while having her help me keep my youth, through radiating such a simple understanding of life that is ever-present in a child but forgotten by many adults. Being too young to understand why people actually kill off other human beings. Being too young to care about war and only caring that you keep your older sibling close to you throughout the conflict. This is one of very few films which is able to accurately capture the essence of not just being brother and sister but knowing that without one, the other could never function or live through such an ordeal. It is a true love story in its purest and more crushing form. I actually had to leave the room a few times throughout this film, when I first watched it, because I didn't want my mates to see me full fledged crying. The last time I cried like that I was 10 and my rabbit died. Anything that can break me down into my own soul THAT much, deserves a comment opening up in appreciation. What an excellent and timeless film.

I have lost my mother in this pandemic, i have my younger sister too, i don't have a very good relationship with my father, forget relatives. This movie tramatized me, unleashed my deepest fears. I have experienced ptsd while watching this movie. People are so cold hurted, who show data, statistics, numbers of any casualties. They lack compassion, they can't feel if they haven't suffered anything It looks very cool for them to say this many millions people died. Each dead person in those reported and unreported millions of death, have their own story, own trauma and thier own tragedy. And one death in family is not only just one death, it literally destroys 2-3 lives for their rest of the life. I am fortunate enough, that i atleast i have food to eat and house to live. Which most of the time we took for granted. This is so sadning to think that war, pandamic have made several childrens and young adults orphans.

I watched this film recently. As a grandson of someone who lived through the Japanese occupation of our south east asian country during WW2 and was around to tell his grandkids about the horrors done by the japanese soldiers, this film still moved my heart.. It is hard to reconcile the price of war on civilians of both sides. The people of both sides suffered hunger, malnutrition, physical and psychological torture. There was no glee of retribution that "the other side suffered just as horribly" ... Last night, weeks after watching this film I still think of Setsuko when I had my rice dinner, and felt soo gratefull and yet achingly sad for her and others kids like her, for the bellyfull meal that I had. White rice never tasted so fullfilling and precious to me.. What an amazing thing storytelling can do.

I assure you. US civilians did not see anywhere near the hardships suffered by Japanese civilians. No movie has ever made me cry as hard as this one. Probably because the ages of the characters are about the same as the age differences between my sister and I and we grew up in a military family. The entire time watching it, I kept feeling that under different circumstances, this could have been her and me. Also, I think more Americans should watch this movie. I don't think enough of us realize what it's like to be the battleground of a major, modern war. The US hasn't had a war fought on its soil since the 1800s and too many simply don't understand the trauma inflicted by military action.

The only time i cried during a movie. I was on the verge of tears for the entire film, wich is something i never felt before. And when she died i couldn't hold it anymore. I had never experienced such powerful emotions before during a movie. Grave of the Fireflies holds a special place in my heart.

This is genuinely one of my favorite movies of all time and definitely the best war film period. The animation is beautiful and the music does its job, however they are part of a story that I never ever want to experience again, there is such a simple beauty in a lot of peaceful quiet and honestly downright nostalgic moments yet the events that fall upon these two children have this looming air of dread over the entire film that no other film I think has ever done to me like that. If you are reading this, please stop reading and try and find a way to watch this movie

I'm about to watch it but just wanted to mention that there's another animated Japanese wartime drama named In This Corner of the World that's also quite good. The author of the novel ‘蛍の墓’ ‘Grave of the fireflies’ Akiyuki Nosaka wrote in his essay “all love and tenderness lost their color before hunger.” He wrote this novel under memories and atonement of his sister Keiko who died at the age of 1 year and 3 months. This novel is based on Nosaka’s experience during the war as a14 years old boy. He lost his entire family including his step grandparents, his step parents ,his uncle and aunt by B-29 firebombing . And so he had being left alone with a baby sister and had to take care of her all by himself. Actually, after the end of war, he met his birth father who was serving for Japanese navy as a captain and later became a mayor of Niigata prefecture. If you are interested in his novel, I recommend you “War stories for children “ which is also touching your heart . Love from Japan amid of COVID-19

For all those who are wandering this is not an Anti-War Movie. I have seen people who are ignorant enough to say that these kids deserved it after Pearl Harbor. But we must not forget each sides have innocent people being killed each and every day. No country is innocent in war. True sometimes a country does start the battle with another. But remember that even if you bomb a country back you are the enemy to them as they are to you. Not even America can be seen as innocent...Yes Terrorist kill people and they're not innocent. But America does indeed bomb some places in the Middle East and that causes death. Just as death was caused in this movie. It represents the innocent that has no where else to go during the war, no relatives/families. And it just shows the utter destruction of them.

Learning about WWI in school, teachers often tried to justify the atomic bombs. "If we didn't bomb them, they would have took more innocent lives. It was the only way to end the war." No! I can't believe ANYBODY can justify bombing innocent civilians. Around 60 civilians died during Pearl Harbor. The rest were people who laid down their lives for America. At least 129,000 people died about the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. We Americans took revenge to a whole different level and the result is still prevalent for some Japanese people. And even though I'm an American, I'm ashamed of our actions then and I'm ashamed of our actions now. I would also like to apologize of behalf of America for the role we played in taking the lives of innocent people during any war.

I think it definitely has anti-war themes. Both through destruction of their home in the firebombings, and through the mistakes of the main character (and other characters in the film), adopting a prideful and nationalistic attitude that, in the end, kills his sister--the one true innocent in the film. I can't imagine anyone who watches this could come away without a feeling trepidation towards conflict.

Don't forget the Japanese raped and slaughtered millions of Chinese people. They are absolutely not innocent. You have not been to Iwo Jima and seen the things that happened. Studio Ghibli and the composers made a wonderful world as seen/felt by children, while showing daily struggles, but the strong emotions and relationships make it all worthwhile.
