That bike is a classic beauty. Thin fork. No bulky rotors. Round tubing (for the most part). Ti bikes are awesome

I was lucky enough to find one of these used locally. Rides great like all Ritcheys and is my main gravel bike.

Excellent ol' school TR breakaway ! Thanks for sharing , i still ride a 1999 titanium cantilever Litespeed 😉

Litespeed made some seriously cool CX bikes. I have a video on the channel about my Appalachian, which I use for "Winterval" riding with the lads when daylight savings goes bye bye.

I currently have one bike for everything and it is the steel version of the Breakaway Cross. I upgraded the fork to the same WCS you have and run SRAM Force 2x10. For rides that include singletrack I run Maxxis Ravager/Rambler 40mm F/R. The bike has been all over the country and on a couple of European adventures. Great bike.

Nice one Joel. The mechanical derailleurs, especially the front, has a distinct advantage of additional tyre clearance over an eTap derailleur. Before I acquired this beauty, I too owned the steel version of the Breakaway Cross. These bikes are so so good.

My steel version is my main gravel/road bike (17,000 miles). I have the green one built up with silver Ritchey components and silver Campy Potenza with TRP CX8.4 mini-v brakes. It has been a great bike, though it is time for a paint job.

Once you’ve gone Flair there’s no going back. Just so stable and they allow you to really rip. The Ritchey is timeless classic beauty. But my Moots Routt RSL does it just for me sublimely. Nice stuff coming out of Camp JOM.

My friend just completed the Palouse/Spokane route in Washington state on a titanium bike with....GASP....rim brakes. He did it in 3 days and is of a similar vintage to you and myself, so no hindrance with the brakes. That Ritchey is a fine machine, too bad they don't make a ti breakaway these days. I ended up buying a Lynskey instead.

Great video. I have one as well. I actually sent mine to a Ti builder and had him put disc brake mounts on the frame so run disc brakes on it now. I do have a quick question, you said you changed out all the bolts to titanium. Did you haappen to change out the one on the clamp. that is the one spot that I get rust and hate looking at that knowing it is what is holding the bike together:). If you did can you let me know where you got replacement titanium bolts for that.
@Carney_asada2 жыл бұрын
I have the road version of this bike and love it. Do you have a link to the titanium screws you used for the clamp by the bottom bracket? Mine is rusted!
@GravelCyclist2 жыл бұрын
See TorontoCycles.com - Do yourself a favor and replace all of the bolts while you're at it. Don't forget the Ti prep.

I have like 5 km of gravel road from my home to the nearest tarmac and generally I drive only on good weather to work etc. but one day it was raining a lot and seriously my disc brakes were full of small gravel and started to actually make the riding pretty tough. Should have had a bottle or two of water to clean them up. So that might be bit of an akward thing when riding wet gravel with discs.
@GravelCyclist Жыл бұрын
Riding disc brakes in the rain can sound rather noisy, without braking, but you have to resist scrubbing the pads, unless you actually need to brake. When the conditions dry up, the calipers generally quit making noise after a short while. No additional water is needed.

This bicycle appears to have rim brakes. Just checking in as to your health, on this basis. Did you survive?

are those AC wheels tubeless, or did you rig conventional clinchers to go tubeless?

Those are conventional clinchers that converted nicely to tubeless. A few layers of tape, valve, sealant, and all good.
