Thanks 👍 This little patch of land is tucked away and you'd hardly notice it's there, but it has such an interesting history.

You really would not know this was a cemetery if that sign was not the fence. Thx for sharing!!

Some of the Pen still exists. The original prison buildings from the 1870is there at 65 Richmond st. The original gate house is accessed from Governors Ct. The original receiving warehouse is just below Columbia on the River walk under the Skytrain tracks. All of the buildings have been restored and repurposed.

Thanks! I'd heard there were a couple original buildings around - Sounds like a good reason to go do some more exploring :)

After looking at the names and the dates of those prisoners deaths, it feels kinda sad that no one would claim them. One of the prisoners was only 18 and clearly family wanted nothing to do with him… who knows. And many were only in their 30’s and 40’s. Regardless, still sad that no one wanted to claim these men whether they were 20 or 70. Especially if their crimes were more petty. Even when you look their names up and the prison name, there isn’t anything on them. They have literally just became forgotten and nothing more but a set of random numbers with a name on a wood board - nothing else. No family history, birth or anything relating to who they were.

Wow. Fantastic that they know generally the layout of the burials. I was researching some notable figures in our area and came across an old asylum cemetery but sadly the records were lost. Finding that to be the case in a lot of research unfortunately.

It looks like they were able to at least link back the inmate numbers to some sort of records, but I read that a lot of the files were burned when the place closed down. Sadly all to common to see records destroyed from that era.

Was there a Douglas Road Cemetery or New Westminster Cemetery that was closed? Somewhere along Canada Way?

Exactly. It’s kinda sad. No one wanted to claim them. If their crimes were more petty it’s actually even more depressing. I felt bad when I saw one prisoner was only 18 and a couple others were like 70. To know no one even cared about their passing is sad in of itself. Literally the only reason anyone knows their name or their date of death was because of a wood panel board put up.

@cordeliachase601 I hear you. If their crimes were basically nothing like the guy who stole 15 dollars worth of socks, he should have the dignity to be buried somewhere less forgettable Though, if you do something that warrants you be here for like then who cares. Because obviously their families didn't.

My mom lives in the tower right in front of that site. I originally managed to find my way into that site accidentally years before the eedevelppmenta began

would you like to run a campaign so that they preserve the pet-cemetery? we should keep them forever.

We have a friend in a local paranormal society that did an investigation here! I heard they got some readings - I'll have to find out more about about what exactly they found :)
