In my girls only college days in an Indian city, there were several girls from conservative Hindu, as well as Muslim families. These girls always came dressed very conservatively, covered from head to toe in Indian outfits ; some of the Muslim girls wore the burqa & hijab too. Then, during lunch time, they would wear more fashionable Western outfits like jeans /skirts, put on make-up & go to meet their boyfriends (each bf lasted 2-6 months on average, before the next arrived). Their rendezvous would be in cafes, cars, cinema halls & cheap hotels (no prizes for guessing what they did there! ). Then, they would come back to college, change back their clothes & go back home. Most of them covered for each other, viz a viz, making excuses to their families. Almost all these girls that I knew had arranged marriages, generally before they even finished their college course. Pretending to be virginal in their marital beds was the hardest thing that these consummate coquettes ever did. Needless to say, almost all of them are now adroitly navigating married life with their extra - marital activities!

@@Abdullah-mn6sw wearing the hijab is a political statement because you're effectively saying that you're not a part of this society and that you reject its secular, liberal values. A logical extension is ghettos and a parallel social and even judicial system. The French see this as separatism and will not tolerate it. You're free to be a Muslim at home but if you want to be an Islamist in public, you should go to a Muslim majority country. No society can function without a basic consensus on the foundation of reality, it's needed for social cohesion and thus for solidarity and for a trust-based society we aim to build in the West. Islam is incompatible with European values but not just European and thus modern values, it cannot coexist with any other culture as we see everywhere from Israel to China. In fact, Islam can't even coexist with itself, the hatred of Sunni Muslims for the Shia is deeper than any other.

@@toobalkain By your logic if I woman chooses to wear pants instead of the traditional clothing of a nation, say for example India. Then she making a political statement and shouldn't be tolerated. It's people like you who don't understand freedom but call their nation free. And Islam isn't incompatible, it's a minority of racists such as yourself who are the cause of problem. Sunni and Shia aren't fighting, Iran and Saudi are. By your logic the cold war was also between US catholics and Russian orthodoxs. Women who wear hijab are just used to dressing that way. For them, they're just normal everyday clothes. This 'promoting Islamic Superiority' through 'dress code' is really just b****. (to be blunt, they'd think that idea was crazy) That 'dress code' is more of a tradition, passed from mother to daughter for centuries. (but they'd probably find it funny that it scares outsiders) As for behaviour, you said it yourself. You don't judge people by how they dress. See, for many women the hijab is a respectful garment (despite all 'oppressive' stuff the media likes to waffle on about.). . Unfortunately it doesn't change a person's personality. (this conflicting appearance/personality thing seems to be more common these days. many women like to dress traditional, but behave in a way they consider more 'modern')

I remember during the late 90s in western countries Hijab was seen as a symbol of oppression. Feminists and liberals were engaged in activism to abolish hijab, niqab, burqa or similar attire which is demeaning for women. But after the rise of islamophobia from right wing americans post 9/11 terror attack, , the feminists and liberals took a U-Turn and started defening hijab saying "her body her choice". Political ideologies are weird. It rarely has anything to do with values or humanity, more about the adage- *the enemy of my enemy is my friend* . Basically the left are saying _"If those republicans are against an issue, then we should support that issue"_ .

Wearing a hijab is very much giving credence to the oppression of women. Is it really choice. When they have been brainwashed from birth. When should they choose to not wear one, they would be disowned by their family and community. When there is significant community and cultural pressure to wear one. Is it really their choice. For me it is a symbol of female oppression. I find them utterly offensive. It is also a clear symbol of separation. Us and them. And for at least some of them, they feel superior in some way, that they are more pure then western women. Get rid of them. Yes ban them. It is as you say NOT a religious requirement. It is cultural. Muslims’ thoughts tend to be overridden with guilt. There is no sense of guilt in hurting others. The guilt is in relation to the observation of the Law. If a Muslim does something contrary to what is permitted, other Muslims are required to remind him of the Law, induce shame in him, and demand compliance. In countries that are more Islamic, particularly in Iran and in Saudi Arabia, it is the state that makes sure the individual follows the religious laws. In March 2002 Saudi Arabia's religious police stopped schoolgirls from leaving a blazing building because their hairs were not covered. As a result, fifteen girls were burned alive. The observance of the dress code was deemed more important than the lives of these girls.
