Jai Hinduja. The British had been playing the Great Game for Central Asia as an outsider for much of the nineteenth and twentieth century and recently, the great game was taken up by the Yanks like in Afghanistan. Now it seems that Rising new powers outside the region will be interested in the Great Game.

Here is an interesting fact for you guys: When I started work in 1971 and completed my training, I worked on the International Telex Switchboards. (It was the main form of communication for businesses in those days, eg Shell, BP, construction, and so on.) All calls to the then Soviet Union went through Moscow. (It was not automated like today). I remember Olga was one of their operators. So, if for instance Crane Freuhoff wanted to send a telex message to Tashkent, it would go through our switchboard in London. We would call Moscow and wait for an operator to connect us to Tashkent. Of course, in those days, it was all considered to be USSR (CCCP). The country itself was never mentioned, as it was a part of the Soviet Union.

Guys, please give Americans a break. We're literally on the opposite side of the world from Central Asia, and without any seaports, our access to them would be limited even if they weren't former Soviet republics. We'd probably be better off learning about India first -- the place has as complex a history as Europe, and we barely scratch the surface in school.

Guys, literally _do not_ give Americans a break on their Geography. Street interviews routinely show how we can barely name _any_ foreign countries besides our friends in Western Europe, Japan, Canada, Mexico, and the hotbeds of activity in the Middle East. Probably a quarter of us couldn't name a single country in Africa, even obvious ones like Egypt or South Africa. I agree completely about learning about India in school, too. Aside from a brief unit on Buddhism, I don't think even British Raj came up, let alone anything about your peoples' local rule, wider cultures, or mythology.

Chína has done way more than simply "eye" Central Asia. The PRC annexed territory from Kazakhstan in 1998, from Kyrgyzstan in 2002, and Tajikistan in 2011. The world largely ignored it for some reason. Chína also "leased" further territory for "farming" and built a miIitary base in eastern Tajikistan. The Belt & Road Initiative that Chína has been promoting to the wider world the past decade used Central Asia as its testing ground, where it began its capture a decade earlier. The governments of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan are effectively puppets of Chína to a large extent. There have been protests in Kyrgyzstan against Chína since the 2000s, in large part due to Chína's control of mines and refineries, and not hiring locals for construction projects in Kyrgyzstan, and more recently their persecution and mass-internment of ethnic Kyrgyz in Xínjíang. Protests have now also happened in Kazakhstan in recent years for similar reasons, including their persecution and mass-internment of ethnic Kazakhs in Xínjíang.

The critical nature of Central Asia to empire, past, present and future is worth discussion and attention. Professor Alfred McCoy’s analysis of this is excellent. @Shivam Yadav So just because a population of a certain faith is growing, that makes it okay for the Hindus to butcher them in public, like thousands of videos out there on Twitter, the media, and so forth? What kind of rationale is this?
@porkysharma8423
@porkysharma8423 2 жыл бұрын
@Shivam Yadav You receive what you give. Can't blame them given how you treat your minorities, and this is not something new, nor something that regards just Muslim. Muslims, Sikhs, Buddhists and Christians all face discriminations, extortions and in certain cases death. I don't see people of the same nation, kill each other because of religion other than India, especially one that call itself a "democracy". What that word entails to the Indians, I don't know. And it goes far beyond just faith. Tell me which country in this world discriminate people by birth or job by your inhumane caste system? Dalits being gang raped without never getting their justice, while male Dalits are being tortured and treated as disposable "sub human" beings, if not as a level lower than "sub-human". "the people here in general are very accepting for the other cultures." every human rights NGOs say the opposite. You say Hindus are very open to other cultures, yet headline like this made their way to the media: "‘Convert to Hinduism or die’ Rising fanatics attack churches, assault, burn Bibles". Is that what you call tolerance in India?

For tourists the Pamir highway might be ok but for international trade not really. @ihaveagoal4665
@ihaveagoal4665 2 жыл бұрын
It's not out of questions but the problem is, pakistani government isn't ready to improve relations with india or resume diplomatic talks untill, india accepts their demand to make kashmir a separate country, which is obviously impossible/impractical considering it willingly joined the Union of india back in 1947 and has been an integral part of the country ever since. Infact some pakistani leaders want to leave this demand and accept the status quo, but they still can't do it. Because it would be equivalent of political suicide if they abandon the kashmir narrative, as pakistanis are too emotional about kashmir and it is used as a political tool to gather support and win elections there. So until they accept the fact that kashmir can't be separated from india, relations will remain sour. Though both of our country could benefit so much from each other if we had good relations, i wish to see it happen in my lifetime.
