#edgeperformanceas #gravityknightflying #offairport In this video, I install the new performance exhaust from Edge, and then after some initial break-in time in the pattern, I head for the mountains to put them to the test!

So in conclusion, the same power was achieved with about 2" less manifold pressure, maybe more! EGT's went down around 50 degrees (although I wouldn't necessarily lean it out to bring the temps back up to those same numbers - but a slight amount of leaning would be safe - which adds to efficiency). The EGTs are also more even across cylinders. And, it sounds cooler 👍😄

Flying where you do, is really where the Edge motors shines. With out the turbo, it would be much harder to get where you are flying. GREAT Video.

I’m envious. Landing in those places is no joke, and you make it look easy. At 6,000 DA, I ground myself, but then again, my aircraft isn’t high performance by any stretch of the imagination and my home airport is at the ocean. My hangar is 16 feet MSL.

Another fantastic learning video. Glad the new bigger ext. pipes improved your engine performance. You put all the power that engine produces to it's maximum intended purpose to fly and take off at those high elevations in the middle of no where.

Another great video. I really enjoy the scenery. I do have to say, the few seconds of video with the engine running with nobody at the controls makes me cringe just al little. I have a friend who had his airplane destroyed by a runway Cessna many years ago. I also know of a pilot who was killed recently in TX when the airplane got away during a maintenance run.

Good point. Can't be too safe. One thing to consider though, it has a throttle lock, and a parking brake.. both would have to fail for it to get ugly. On the low boost map, it won't drag the tires.

Great video, I’m impressed with the way work on your aircraft. Are you keeping the cost of the upgrade? I’d like to know what the final price is. All the ink on your left arm would probably have paid for half of the upgrade 😃😃 also great to hear you have the music and speech level on the mark. Thank you for that. 👍🏻👍🏻😎😎

Thanks for sharing I fly out of Hartsel CO. In an ultralight. I'm scratch building a ch701 installing a jabiru 3300 120hp. Not a lot of people flying at 10k and above. My field elevation is 9k which takes that 120 hp down into the mid 80hp range. At one point edge performance did a turbo on a jabiru 2200 never seen on on the 3300 but heard of a twin turbo one. I will be building a turbo setup when I get to that point. Maybe I'll see you on top of a mountain out here some day.

@@donniewoodley8604 Awesome Donnie! Hope so!! I think Edge has been working on a fuel injection setup for the 3300 here lately.. don't quote me though. I had a friend with one in an S7, it had a slide carb. Revmaster I believe. Mixture seemed to be set about right, but it never made much power. I think part of the issue was the really short 2 blade prop it had... According to the tip speed calculator, even being a fast turning direct drive engine it could have swung a prop about 10" longer. Or maybe a 3 blade would have helped. Possible that carb setup was restricting it too I suppose. Be interesting to see how yours performs...

@@GravityKnightFlying funny I bought this 3300 from a guy with a yellow s7. I Helped pull it off. he is installing I newer 0 time 3300. He had a 35mm aero injector on it and a tiny 66 two blade cruiser prop sensinich. Seems to be what most prop manufacturers offer for the 3300. Whirlwind offers a 66inch 3 blade for the ul 350is but that's small as well. May end up with a 72 inch 3 blade warp drive since they offer a hp hub for the 3300. Seen some kitfox with the jab 2200 and warp drive 3 blade looked like they performed very well. And rotec has a 40mm throttle body injector may go that rout. Finished wing spars and all the nose ribs today nice to see parts taking shape. I enjoy your videos they help push me to get there. Back out to the shop to work on aft ribs.

Todd, can you share details on how the turbo works? Is it manually controlled? If it’s controlled thru the throttle does the wastegate open only after the intake manifold is at wide open throttle? Been trying to wrap my head around this and have not received any good feedback yet.
@GravityKnightFlying
@GravityKnightFlying 3 жыл бұрын
With the Edge system, the wastegate is controlled by the ECU via a cable and servo. (Same servo as the 914 tcu uses stock). The Edge system has the ability to be adjustable. So I can vary boost by altitude to keep the RPM in check as I go up (since I have a fixed pitch prop). I was also able to run lower than max limit power Edge states because I wanted to be on the extra safe side. But the system is complicated to tune properly and has taken a lot of time to dial in just right. Cool stuff for sure though! Unlike older engines in the aircraft world, where you had to control the boost by only advancing the throttle far enough to reach desired manifold pressure, on these once setup, you can just kick the throttle open and go. It also has dual maps, so one is set for cruise/low boost.. and the other for higher boost/initial climbout. -T
@Stromzilla
@Stromzilla 3 жыл бұрын
So if I’m hearing you correctly I could run high boost for takeoff, and then hold 30” to 35” MAP thru 15,000 ft by mapping the servo to altitude change? Holy crap! Can’t imagine having that kind of power and control thru a flight range. Will your motor run cruise at 30” MAP continuous? That’s wot at sea level for non turbo engines.

I’m curious, do you have to hold an A&P license to work on your own aircraft, then you have someone with an IA sign your work off, or is you work on it and hope for the best?
@GravityKnightFlying
@GravityKnightFlying 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Anthony, with experimental, you can work on your own plane. But once a year for the condition inspection, an A&P has to inspect and sign off. (unless you are the original builder of the plane.. and have a repairmens cert)
