Yea I think Westeros will be a disappoint, if not a major disappointment to Dany because she is tying the feeling of home to a location. Don’t want to be cliche but “home is where the heart is” and I think she is the only POV to not have an established home to think back on. The house with the red door is kind of like a smokescreen that she can’t grasp.

Came across an interesting passage in this chapter. "As her liter passed beneath the stolen monuments, she went from sunlight to shadow and back again". Sounds an awful lot like..."to reach the light, you must pass beneath the shadow". Maybe Quaithe was telling Daenerys she'd have to return to Vaes Dothrak someday, where she'll unite all the khalasars into one and fulfill the 'stallion who mounts the world' prophecy. Which incidentally Dany is in the process of doing at the end of ADWD. Maybe the truth Quaithe said Dany would get after passing beneath the shadow is that Dany herself was the stallion. I know the popular interpretation of Quaithe's quote is that Dany must go to Asshai; but I'd point out that Quaithe herself never actually says that. Dany assumes it. So it's possible Dany, and ostensibly us as readers, fell for the misdirect. George is a tricksy bird!

I interpret those passage to foreshadow Dany's death. She will go from sunlight (life) to shadow (death) and back to the light. I think her returning back to the light is that her death will strip away the darkness and she will return to those she loved and lost. If I remember, in the show, they played Jenny of Oldstone's song before the battle with the WW. Dany will dance with her ghosts like Jenny, and she will finally be happy again, and feel the warmth of her "sun and stars". In other words, I think her death will simply be a transformation. She will become a dragon for a time, but then return to herself in death. Just my opinion of course. :)

@@bassanimation I get that interpretation (foreshadowing death); I just wouldn't make the case for it based on anything in the show. Particularly a song placement. However, I do agree Dany dies in the end and will reunite with Drogo. Mirri Maz Duuhr's famed "when the sun rises in the west and sets in the east" quote seems to be a timeline at the end of which Dany dies. Since Drogo has no body, the only way he can come back to Dany, which is what she asked before Mirri cited that quote, is spiritually. Meaning Dany has to die. Now, I will say while I get the 'death' perspective, I don't personally believe it's what Quaithe meant. Passing beneath the shadow wasn't all Quaithe said; Dany also had to obtain a truth by doing so. A person doesn't get any sort of truth by dying. None they could appreciate. It doesn't make sense to tell her she has to die to learn a truth. Just my opinion. We're probably both wrong lol.

@@ashleyofnaath Totally agree with you on most of this. I suspect that one of the last things Dany will envision before she dies is Drogo, as he was. In a way, this plays off another scene with Mirri. Dany tells herself she would die for Drogo, but instead she wraps her arms around herself, as protection. She doesn't die for him, but instead sacrifices her son (and a horse). Her last act might symbolize a reversal of this, where she does have to die to regain what she'd lost. I know the show is difficult to cite, but yet again we have the vision of her going beyond the wall and seeing Drogo and her baby in a sunlit tent. Perhaps this is what she will see. :) As for obtaining truth in death, I have to disagree a little there. Many times we only appreciate the truth when we are close to death. The tragedy is most of the time we don't get to right them. Death can also be symbolic in this story, like with Theon, who does get a chance to right his wrongs. There's a lot of ambiguity with Quaithe's words, what they will mean, etc. Hopefully GRRM will get to the end so we can get a better idea of things. For now, all we have is foreshadowing, and the show. I believe the show was largely correct, they just omitted/abridged much of what was going on.

@@bassanimation Again, I'd caution against relying on the show. That scene of Drogo in the tent doesn't happen in the books. It was only put into the show so as not to reveal the Red Wedding, which was the big thing Dany sees in the House of the Undying in the books. Just because the scene in the show happened to be backlit doesn't mean anything for the books, connect to Quaithe's warning, etc. In fact that part of Quaithe's story wasn't even in the show so we really can't connect the two. I can't say the show got anything right when, per its own admission, the subversion of expectations dictated storytelling. Agree to disagree I suppose🤷‍♀️.

As a mom, hearing Dany thinking about her son, stroking her belly, feeling him move, and then knowing what ultimately happens absolutely breaks my heart. I have three children, but I also had three miscarriages in between them. That feeling of excitement, and wondering what your child will be like, just to have that taken away, is just absolutely devastating. This chapter and all her future GoT chapters honestly hit me differently after having my miscarriages. Her loss breaks my heart more. Dany is one of my favorite characters. She’s a strong ass woman. The people who say she’s going crazy or that she had everything handed to her piss me off to no end. She’s been through just as much trauma as any of the other POVs

Actually, I don't think Dany wanted revenge on Mirri. I think part of her understood. She even tells her, it's not your screams I want, only your life. She learned that only death can pay for life, so she sacrifices Mirri. Idk, I feel like Dany is extremely detached in that last chapter.

Thank you for going in depth on Dany here. I love her so much, but one thing I have trouble with is the MMD situation. I feel like GRRM made some statements there that we shouldn't ignore. For instance, the Dothraki and Dany think MMD is a witch, but Mirri herself says her title of "maegi" simply means "wise". So, if Dany burned "wisdom", what does that mean for her future? In contrast, Ghost's eyes reflect wisdom to Jon. It's as if one rejects wisdom, and the other does not. Something to consider. I do agree both Dany and MMD took out their vengeance on each other, which is very sad. They both suffered at the hands of war, and they felt their rage needed a target. I have a theory that that's what actually fueled the birth of the dragons: anger and pain. That is what created enough heat as both Dany and MMD were on the pyre too. Thank you again! I too love Dany and take strength from her chapters. She is forever my queen.

That’s why she’s such a great character with so much strength she feels so sad and doesn’t feel like she can be loved. How would you feel being a child and on the run majority of your life with no home and people out to destroy you based on your fathers sins. I hope she gets a happy ending because she’s just so tragic from the beginning even in the moments with her killing the masters she still feels sad she has a heavy weight on her shoulders with protecting her people and the slaves while also searching for herself and a place to call home

@@ACinemafanatic Part of why I love Dany is I had a similar unstable childhood. My alcoholic mom was not too different from Viserys. She tended to drag me from place to place as well. This is why Dany _is_ so relatable for me personally. Having said that, I can also look at the choices she makes and see that she's not heading for a happy end.

Danny's main problem is she doesn't know how to politic with westeros as a new leader... she should claim the lands she liberated as lands she conquered and this taxes are paid to us, the people she liberated and made the trip can become small folks in all villages of the kingdom, there are many skilled slaves amongst her group the lords of westeros could appreciate....the smith's, Gardners weavers pillow house workers for the brothels and even people for the wall...I'm sure many of the remaining lords after the war would appreciate that.....

To piggy-back on her psychology profile: The missing POV character of the smallfolk in GOT, removed the Dance of Dragons horror, that lives on in smallfolk memory. Westeros Remembers. They swarmed the dragonpit. Died to kill them. All to fight back against the destruction of the dragons. Removing that POV in the show, removed the soul of the conflict. And with it removed the elements of her psychological profile that will help bring her to realistic point of burning KL.

I think it was the chapter showing Varys activating his plan: he simultaneously sent the assassin and a letter to Jorah to expose the assassin. It was the only thing to provoke Drogo into invading Westeros.

That would have been far too unsure and possibly very dangerous. Also remember that Varys at this points doesn't want a war to happen as Aegon is not ready yet to take the throne (just look at the conversation between him ad illyrio in the dungeon under the red keep in the Arya chapter).

Prince/princess that was promised: I have thought on this, and now really wonder if it's Drogon. He was her son. A Prince. They are her children. Stallion that mounted the world, was said during the ceremony for her pregnancy. He ended up bringing the dawn by burning the iron throne. But yes prophesy can be seen in Jon and Dany and Drogon. We'll see.

I just had a thought about Mirri: she was counting on one of two things happening:1) Drogo would end up in veg state from not following dr instructions OR 2) he would’ve recovered and loathed Dany for blood magic that killed his son (even though she didn’t realize her son would die she still willingly allowed blood magic which is against Dothraki culture) and who knows what would’ve happened to Dany, their marriage and their followers.

You know, I don't think Jon is gonna leave the North soon, if at all. I mean he is dead, and when he comes back , if he does, George is not gonna pull the show stunt, there is no way that Jon will be exactly Jon. He'll be a changed man and frankly I feel his story will remain in the North. Now why would Dany fight him in the North? I feel like they'll likely be some kind of allies if they're both in the North...right?

I guess I'm just a sucker for the happy ending... When all is said and done, I want to see Dany and Jon get their dragons to modify the iron throne so that it's big enough for two... if they try to distance themselves from each other, that's when they get cut by the throne. They have to rule together... and we get equality for women throughout the kingdom with an infusion of light and dark to create balance in the world... summers equal to winters, etc. But I doubt GRRM would ever go that route.

i wish we could know how the targaryens would have turned out had the dance never happened. would there be 100s of dragons both human and real? would they have ended up conquering essos again a few generations down the line, with all the dragons they would have had at that point. and if they found out the maesters were trying to kill the dragons they could have easily destroyed them. damn i wish the dance never happened.

While I completely understand, I don't think you're supposed to feel empowered or invigorated by Drogo's speech. George is a pacifist, this kind of threat to the world, especially for personal reasons, is the kind of thing GRRM hates. That's why the mention of rape is not problematic, you're not supposed to identify with the speech, you're supposed to be horrified by it and by Dani's reaction. Martin is exploring why and how shit gets out of hand between nations/peoples. Consider this speech like Hitler at the Nuremburg rallies, that I think is what is being invoked here.
