In Jon 7 there is alot of intresting tea going down. The chapter opens with the Nights Watch investigating the bodies of two rangers of the Nights Watch who now mysteriously have blue eyes. The way John encourages Sam to look and the echo of it when he told Bran the same thing is a reminder to me of who Sam could have become with a good father or encouraging male role model. John is Sam's friend, but also acting as a father figure. He is helping Sam on his journey to become his best self.

They tell us the iron swords keep the spirits in the graves, later when Jon is waiting to see if the dead in the ice cells rise I think they aren't rising because Jon as says they have them in Iron shackles. They can't rise because of the iron

Agree 1000%. As I recall, there's an instance where someone- possibly Sam, but I don't remember- observed the raven appearing to read a letter. Someone is definitely inhabiting that bird.

Iron is a Fey thing, where Fey are told to not be able to touch iron ad it burns them and their magic is affected by it

One thing about Longclaw that always got me thinking. How a relatively small and humble House such as House Mormont came to be in possession of a valyrian steel blade? It is interesting, considering that the whereabouts of two famous Targaryen swords are currently unknown. Not so long ago I heard a theory considering Longclaw to secretly be one of those blades, although if true it could only be Blackfyre since both are "bastard" swords. But I believe we will see (F)Aegon wielding Blackfyre, which will indicate he is not who he claims to be, but the last descendant of the Blackfyre line.

@@justineharper3346 personally, I don't think they are. Jon recognizes the valyrian steel in Longclaw's blade (and he's already familiar with it from seeing it on Ice), and Dawn is said to be made of a different material.

@@GrayArea Actually I guess if you wanted to go deeper and assumed that if the "iron" throne if it's made from the swords of Aegon's enemies would be made largely from steel (which I think has iron in it but is not "pure" iron) then maybe there is a bit of a metaphor there for the iron throne giving almost like a false sense of security at least where the long night is concerned? So if Daeny represents the fire her ancestor used to forge the throne.... maybe George is hinting she will need "iron" or more to the point the support of The North before it's all over? Iron representing The North and Jon Snow being the embodiment of The North? I wonder if George has ever gone into details in the books about the actual swords of the throne? You know like when Varys and Little finger discuss the number of swords (less than a thousand) in the show? Steve UK

So... there are some inconsistencies I can't figure out. Cold Hands can't enter the wall... or go beyond it, yet the wights get to the other side. Good Queen Alysan can't coax her dragon beyond the wall... and then whathisname takes a moving limb to Kings Landing to prove the others have awoken... and then the show has them bring one of those things in a crate way past the wall and to the dragon pit. Okay... so it's different magics?? I'd think that if the wall is a barrier to magic (like even the walls at Storms End) than it should be consistent somehow... and we never get an explanation as to why it is or why it isn't in these situations.

Spirits are obviously electromagnetic in nature, as they require ferromagnetic screening to be contained, a sort of a Faraday cage :)

A thought I had when listening to this. It’s possible it was too cold, Mormont might have had a hard time waking because he was borderline getting hypothermia . A older man, naked, sleeping. That might be why he didnt wake during the commotion

I don't get how those wights awoke... I mean, Cold Hands couldn't even enter the cave through the wall... Supposedly there is a magical barrier of some kind. So how was the magic working for these 2 dead crows? Is there more involved here? Did somebody warg these dudes in order to show the Crows that the shit is real... the shit about the others and the wight walkers... and thus probably also the giants and children of the forrest too? Somebody needed to light a fire under their asses and get some people to wake the fuck up to the REAL threat to mankind. But I'm always back to how was it possible for the magic to work... if it DID work, why did Cold Hands not go into tunnel with Sam to meet up with Bran? Just confusing....

Iron is supposed to be a poison to fairys and or fays (feys) so perhaps the whites have a connection to them. It could also be connection norse mythology as I believe daurgers (not sure that how u spell it but is a norse undead warriors) could be in prison them in a tomb or grave by placing iron above or on them

RE Jon's burned hand- Obviously this has multiple purposes, but I wonder if one such is that the burn metaphorically marks him. In TWOW, Aeron Damphair has that vision of a woman with fire hands, and I've questioned if she symbolizes Daenerys and her two main allies- Jon Snow and Victarion Greyjoy- both of whom have burnt hands. I realize there are stronger cases for the woman being someone else, but this one is intriguing and I don't see why the burn couldn't symbolically link Jon to Dany and Victarion given the story seems to be building towards an alliance between them anyway. Or at least those two declaring for her if not allying with each other. On an unrelated note, why couldn't Meera wield Dark Sister? She's actually in the cave with it and would know how to use it🤷‍♀️.

The perfect illustration of George's brilliance comes in the form of this hidden gem in AGOT. While watching Robb and Joffrey spar in Winterfell's courtyard, Arya asks Jon why he's not participating and Jon responds: "Bastards are not allowed to damage young princes. Any bruises they take in the practice yard must come from trueborn swords." - AGOT, Arya I We know definitively that Joffrey is a bastard. So if he's the bastard in this scenario, that would make Jon the young prince. Now where this gets really interesting for a conspiracy theorist like myself is that Joffrey isn't alone in the yard; he's with Robb. Some fans (myself included) suspect that Robb is Brandon's bastard, so it makes me question if George was covertly hinting at that here as well. But that's a story for another day I suppose. Awesome episode, really enjoyed this co-panelist🐺🐲❄.

Iron by itself is too soft and prone to fatigue and corrosion to be suitable for swords. (Bronze would be better). So, other elements are use to make an steel alloy to reduce the undesirable traits. For steel swords, the go to is carbon, which produces a strong, hard edged blade which is less prone to breaking and easier to temper.
