you missed the actual ending of Lost Coast, going under the planks that the chopper crash moved leads to a physics elevator back down to the fisherman and getting some last dialogue from him, the elevator is really broken and you can cause it to flip the fuck out by holding towards a direction and spam jumping

Lost Coast convinced me to try the developer commentary on all the Valve games, and there's genuinely a wealth of great info there. Stuff like that and Raising the Bar are probably super useful for aspiring game developers. The Left4Dead one pointing out how using lights and fires to draw players forward is so ubiquitous, I spot it in every game (and it's a great reason why confusing areas of games wind up that way.)

First off lost coast is not a game. It is a tech demo, apparently for HDR technology. I did not know valve had a hand in creating HDR technology. Also lost coast , is shipped with the source SDK so that you can develop maps for half life 2 without having half-life 2 installed (and as a known path to a source game for hammer to allow you to compile and run).

the claim that lost coast was cut from Half-Life 2 is the strangest thing. A lot of people claim that but it's just not true. There isn't really a place to put it into the coast and the beta maps of it didn't pop up until after Half-Life 2's release. Even Valve claims it was cut but the only way one could see that as true is if Valve had the concept during Half-Life 2 but never iterated on it until after.
